55 KNOT STORM + HUGE WAVES 😬💨⛵ Storm that Broke our Pole - SV Delos Ep. 314

We're rocketing down the Chesapeake Bay in storm conditions of 55 knot winds and huge waves. Then our rig makes a sound like a gun shot and we scramble to asses the damage before we hit a lee shore.....
After finishing our mini-refit in Annapolis we set sail under calm, beautiful conditions. Our destination is Little Creek, Virginia where we'll stop and prepare to round the notorious Cape Hatteras. On our 2nd day out the conditions build throughout the day and by afternoon we find ourselves in terrible winds with huge following seas. The winds are a solid 40 knots with gusts to 55 knots. Things go sideways when we get hit by a combination of a wind shift and a large breaking sea that causes our jib to backwind and smashes our downwind pole into Delos. With a lee shore ahead we need to asses the damage and get some sail up to get into a protected anchorage.
Many hugs and hope you liked the video! Brian, Karin and little Sierra

Years ago I lived aboard my 32 footer inAnnapolis then made the "outside" passage south to Marathon Key. Got caught in a blow off theVirginia Capes. Big confused seas in the Gulf Stream eddies. Got thrown against the chart desk and broke 4 ribs. Couldbarely handlethe lines so I trimmed to trysail and motor sailed to Charleston. The delays in healing, I lost the ob I had lined up in Marathon so I motored the ICW back to Anapolis, sold the boat and moved to Montana :) Love the videosyou guys put out. Thanks for sharing,

Wind against current in shallow water is a formula for producing steep waves with their peaks close together. Add in breaking waves at the mouth of a river bar, and you really shouldn't have been there just then.

Just love following you guys on Delos! Kazza - what a wonderful Sailor Mum! Brian just loved watching your mouth as you poored your stiff - well earned drink - priceless. Jordan great crewman in challenging weather. I remember 50+ knots over the deck just off Michalmas Island out of Albany, Western Australia 40 years ago- middle of the night - big swells - white water everywhere! 8 crew - 6 down below in their bunks totally disabled with sea sickness. The steel keel came loose and we were taking water - knee high in the salon! White water everywhere - skipper at the helm and me trying to secure the life raft which had come loose on the coachroof. We made it into Albany the next day bruised and battered but safe. Great sailing Delos crew and the little Nugget what a joy to behold. Can't wait for your next episode

I am not a sailor, but as long as we're in line with the waves, we're good. The moment we go on the side, the waves can flip. Its a good thing you were along the coast and the waves were pushing your boat from behind and giving you speed. Later for a while you experienced some very nasty winds 55 Kn to 60 Kn and the pole broke and slammed. Very scary. Luckily, you wete almost near the harbor/shore. Take care guys, get the weather updates in advance.

I live on a remote island in southeast Alaska with plenty of adventure and challenges. I don’t know what the Delos crew dose to recharge and find inspiration to keep going. I watch sailing videos, primarily Delos, Uma and Atticus. The three of you do such a good job of raising the mundane up to the states of adventure, and showing the adventure as being a manageable part of life. I often find myself asking what would the crews do? Then crawl under the house to fix the leak, or build the thing for the green house, because that’s what a sailor would do. Thanks for the constant inspiration, showing all of us that kids are adaptable and that life is an adventure. Fair winds and following seas, and no more bent and broken stuff. I look forward to the upcoming brilliant fix🤠

Such raw emotion, Karin, "It's different being a mom..." Yes, indeed. You both are living examples every day, and it's going to be soooo interesting to see what the little nugget becomes, growing up in such a richly rewarding and exciting environment. Holy Moly, what a blow! Impressive captaining Brian. Stay safe out there, and Godspeed! You guys are awesome!!

My heart went out to Karen as she worried about weathering the storm. Becoming a parent brings the intensity of protectiveness. It’s nice to see Brian and Karen growing as competent and loving parents. Very smart to have another set of hands aboard. Sail safe🙏

Yes, really enjoy the sailing and adventure content. Also the how to - you, your channel, ...tremendous. I like your recent videos more, with your seasoned yet still very adventurous life perspective and great attitudes regarding life and even necessary chores and maintenance- more than the wilder earlier years. You've expanded your audience reach and transitioned well to be a truly wholesome channel millions enjoy many can easily engage and rate high as or higher than stalwart National Geographic and the television Adventure Channel- and your film and video crew and production crew is...just you!!(just yourselves.)

Watching Brian lash that boom had me holding my breath. I was checking to see if he was attached to a line! Talk about suspense, that was thrilling, well done everyone.
