Sailing into a 50 KNOT GALE- Worst Storm We've Ever Seen- Sailing SV Delos Ep. 93

Sailing to Madagascar we get hit by the biggest gale we've ever seen. We're about 240 miles East of the northern cape of Madagascar when the GRIB files start to show a compressed pressure gradient and forecasts of 30-40 knots.
We shorten sail and prepare for the rough weather. The forecast is way too low and we end up seeing 50 knots of wind and 7-10M (20-30 ft) waves during the worst part of it, which of course happens at night. The crew gets tossed around like crazy and everyone is forced to stay in their bunks while Capt. Breeyawn and The Braidster take 30 minute shifts hand steering down the waves all night long. It's a really intense experience but Delos is a strong boat and takes very good care of us.
This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.

I think the value of the Amel brand just increased. Brian and Frida's testimony of their confidence in Delos is the best endorsement a manufacturer could ever get. Chantiers Amel S.A. owes this crew a lot more than just buying them a beer.

What a ride. This vid particularly, reminds me of my youth days fishing off the West Coast of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Island, BC, Canada) 30 days out, without touching land on 54' Wooden Freezer Trawler. In those 30 days we hit weather such as this more than once. 30' swells, Buddy boat ahead of us would completely disappear in the trough's, poles and all until we surf up the side of the wave and catch a glimpse of them until we dive down again. Wooohoo....lets ride. Looks like fun to me. Congrats on spectacular vids, informative and educational all rolled into one.

[Liz] Brady's comment about preferring not to see what the waves were like at daylight RANG SO TRUE!! We had a similar three day experience in the Indian Ocean which tested our mettle as sailors and as a two-person team. Putting your life in the hands of someone else one minute, then being responsible for them the next forges an unbreakable bond. Fantastic episode, and I KNOW it was 10 times worse than the camera showed. Peace and fair winds!

You are so impressive. In an extreme wind condition, you have the most experienced helmsmen on watch, and you have the biggest hole in the boat, the main hatch, closed, as it should be. Your attention to the safety of the boat and the crew is admirable. Keep up the good work (Yeah, I know this is an older video so in fact you kept up the good work, past tense.) You had adventures and you survived. That is proper captaincy and leadership. Best Regards.

Great boat, greater crew (especially when under some real stress in 40+ gusting) and one of the best videos ever to give a sense of what its like in a big breeze on a dark night - even though video never truly does the sea state justice - and the Super Maramu has such a sweet ride in a seaway, to say nothing of a solid bimini to keep you dry (well dry'ish) : -))).
