BUZZED by a Navy Seahawk Chopper Rounding Cape Hatteras - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 316
"Delos. Delos. This is Cannonball on 16. Do you copy?" Never, ever did we expect to be hailed by Navy Seahawk Chopper in the middle of the ocean. But here we were offshore, speaking to the pilot of this amazing aircraft. "Cannonball- This is Delos. Please switch to channel 69, the Pleasure Channel" It turns out that the pilot and crew followed our videos and just happened to be doing a routine training mission around Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks. It was an incredibly exhilarating experience to have such a powerful machine circling Delos, with the downwash from the rotor hammering our sails! Shortly after we find ourselves rounding the Notorious Cape Hatteras, AKA The Graveyard of the Atlantic in the middle of the night. With favorable conditions we make short work of the Cape and safely make an entrance into anchorage just outside Beaufort, NC. Another passage in the books!
Many hugs and hope you liked the video! Brian, Karin and little Sierra

What an incredible experience! Special thanks to the crew for the fly by :). Also noted that the Navy flies the Seahawk, while the Army flies the Blackhawk!

You got the footage from their angle already? Oh, hell yeah, good job! And ..... "buzzed"? Nah, you were only buzzed if you could look DOWN on the aircraft from your crow's nest. I had that experience aboard the USS Peleliu in 1985. Somewhat larger than your boat, but the plane in question was a B-52. I've heard that kind of stunting isn't allowed anymore.... sad, isn't it?

@@johnwolf2829 Well, the sailor could have posted it or emailed it. And Delos has better internet service than you do!
That was awesome to relive that passage. I also want to thank cannonball for flying back over us as I totally forgot to hit the record button on the first fly by. I felt like an idiot. Thank go the chopper was doing an out and back and was able to give us another shot at getting the video right. Dam those hush puppies were good!
For the future: When they wish you, "Fair Winds", you can wish them "C A V U" (Charlie Alpha Victor Uniform). For pilots it means "Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited". They'll appreciate that.

In the future Ryan comes back a few more times. He is the best guy, such a cool guy 😎. Thanks for helping Ryan.
I grew up on that Coast. 1956 " The Bruce of Kirby " went down in a storm. It washed up on the shore. We went to see it. My dad named my little brother Bruce Kirby Chappell. He was born April 29th 1956. My family goes back to 1623 on that coast.

How cool was the footage from inside the chopper!! Super cool, and glad to see how excited everyone (except Nugget 😂) was about our amazing Armed Forces!
I served aboard U.S.S Austin. In 1981 we hit a Nor'Easter after picking up a Marine detachment. There were 30 foot swells for 12 hours. Even the "Old Salts" were scared shitless. It took MONTHS to get the "sick smell" out of the Marine compartments. "Graveyard of the Atlantic" indeed...P.S. I live in coastal S.C. (south of Chas.)

great to see delos and crew in calmer seas heading south. make that butter melt!

I swear she was Lagertha in a previous life. You can see that Viking aggression in her countenance.
Bobby White's Nauti-Dogs from "Sailing Doodles" was nearly sunk rounding Cape Hatteras while soloing. He and the boat survived just barely. The boat stayed afloat but was basically a write-off.
I can’t get enough of u guys!! If u made a video everyday id watch them all 💚💚💚

Thank you Navy Helicopter Guys!!!!! You're AWESOME!!!!!
😲 what! More than 90% of all sailing channels on KZread show Champagne Sailing, Sundowners & white sandy beaches. You show what's 'REAL'. Thanks to everyone.🙋♂️
Wohoo! Delos Friday!
Delos Friday BEGINS! : - ) Like that intro music! Kinda scratchy. And helicopters, they don't fly. No. They beat the air into submission! : - ) But sailboats do fly but, oddly, with one wing in the water (keel) and one (the sail) in the sky. Then of course we have wind, currents, shifting sands and lots of sunken ships! Oh heck, it's still a fine place to sail! 8 - O lol And hey, spotting some dolphins and watching a beautiful sunset make a day pretty sweet! Next up, at 7:17 the man dressed all in white has arisen! Hallelujah! Oh wait, . . . That was "Life of Brian" not "Life of Ryan". At 14:20 the current situation with the current is that it is strong! Buoy-o-Buoy! I was kind of hoping that at 16:00 you'd take us no shore for a small adventure. But we can't always get what we want. This was still a very good episode. It was very nice that Cape Hatteras went by with no real problems. : - ) Scott W
Glad you have one more sailor onboard now . Hopefully you will keep it that way for about four years. Raising a baby can be hard but doing that plus attempting to sail around sounds even more challenging. One more sailor is that way to go. Mommy and Daddy will stay much calmer with that man onboard
How fun! It's great seeing your mood lifting slowly as you get further south. Hope the rest of your journey into warmer waters went well!

SV Delos is a LEGEND! So nice to see this. Keep on with things. So many people get so much enjoyment out of your vids!
The fishing boats were probably expecting you to be arrested fro drug smuggling, or something, seeing that big tough Navy helicopter paying you so much attention.
I foolishly took this trip on as my shake down Cruze for my new boat last july .heading north i definently got my money's worth around cape hatteras thank you for sharing this. I have learned soooo much from your videos!
Awesome fly by! Great energy from the helicopter! Congratulations! Watching from Los Angeles, CA Steve Miller.
Spent 10 years on Atlantic fleet amphibious ships. Going between Moorhead city and Norfolk was always an adventure. Many a times I stood Boatswain Mate of the watch. We were always on the lookout for fishing boats and sailboats When rounding Cape Hatteras
That shot from the helicopter was really freaky because it let's you see the curve of the Earth and you can see how the sea just stays put while the planet spins , crazy 🤔 Love 💕 you guys be careful out there 🥰
Whoa! Navy Seahawk flyby is cool. Maybe you have some Marines fans and they can do an Osprey flyby next? Tides and currents sure do mess with the plans. I did get a 5 knot boost once coming up Galveston bay when I got lucky and caught it just right one time. 13 knots over ground was a record for us that day.
You can cut across Diamond Shoals if there is a swell. It will break over the shallow areas. You can read the water color also when the water is clear. It will save quite a bit of time. Cape Lookout Bight is a great anchorage behind Cape Lookout. You can go ashore and visit the lighthouse and walk across the island to the Atlantic. I was in Marathon when you guys were there. I didn't stop by since I figured would get more visitors than you could handle there. Great Blog!!!!

What an amazing sail an trip... Lil Nugget it will get better your lil sea legs... She's beyond adorable! Looking forward to next week.. Thanks for sharing your life with us ✌🏻💗😊❣️
I just came back home to NY from a few days at the Outer Banks. There were many black hawks patroling the shorelines. From the beach looking out into the Atlantic the seas looked pretty rough with 4-5 ft waves breaching along the shore. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a national treasure that rivals the beaches of Cape Cod in their beauty.
