My $5,000 Mistake 😬 Sailing Vessel Delos ep 321
In a freak accident I lost our entire downwind whisker pole overboard. And now I get to build one from scratch. The big question- how much will it cost?
The cruisers code is kind of like the Good Samaritan law, except at sea! We begin this episode by helping our friends Bill & Grace on @CalicoSkiesSailing sort out a problem with their fuel. After clogging 17 filters on the trip south I decided to pitch in and help them sort out the problem. Plus, it’s always fun working someone else’s boat :)
With Calico Skies in good shape we turn our eyes towards our own projects and move Delos to a friends dock in Boca Raton. We have a pretty fat project list, with building a new downwind whisker pole topping the list. The poles used on Delos are a custom design and not available off the shelf so I need to create a carbon copy of the pole I lost from scratch. After sourcing the raw materials I spend some time running from the metal warehouse to the machine shop to the fabricator. At least we’re making progress…..
Many hugs and hope you liked the video! Brian, Karin and little Sierra

Being a Welder/fabricator I absolutely love that you show the transformation of raw Metal into the parts being made. Keep up the amazing content.
It's incredible how many boat repair projects happen every month. It's relentless.
Kazzatron's contribution to Delos' success cannot be be understated. So smart, steady, and beautiful.
Senor Brady back on the Delos, how fun! Can't wait to see more stuff from him and Blue over at Cruisers Academy!
You all have changed from crazy days on the ocean's of the world to great parents with a beautiful daughter. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one wondering how the transition was going to work from the viewers standpoint, but at least for me, the change is just terrific. Look forward to every new video with the three of you. Awesome.

You know you're attached to Delos when B&B get together and the tears flow... What a journey!
Welcome back Senor Brady😁 Tears of joy for the Trautman family and the Delos Tribe. 😢 😁 Great place for a Delos sticker on the lathe. Thanks to all of the craftsmen that fabricated the whisker pole components. 👍
I've recently started watching Delos, and, other than the most current episodes, I've been catching up chronologically. Right now I'm at Episode 166. Looking at all the other comments from a whole bunch of people, I believe that I'm deeply amongst every one else - I fall deeply in love with the lifestyle of everyone who is on Delos and has been, and feel so connected to these episodes. Each speaks directly to my soul. Better than any " reality" tv that networks try to produce. Thank you so much!

Delos and Calico Skies timelines finally sync, Life is good.
Senior Brady looks happy and healthy!!! I miss them so much
This episode had it all: boat repair, beautiful location, a random party, Senor Brady, Papa Delos, the nugget, and good times.

That locker on Calico Skies is like Mary Poppins bag!
I admire Brians "Can do attitude" seems like there is nothing he can't do! Safe travels

Been loving the new phase of your journey. Watching Sierra grow is its own kind of escape. But lately, I've been thinking of the Indian Ocean. I think it's time to start watching the videos from the beginning again.
Another Delos Friday. Perfect way to start the day. Also love following Cruisers Academy With Brady and Blue. So great to see Brian and Brady together again.
I just wanted to let you guys know you have been a huge inspiration to myself! My name is Sam and I’m 20 years old from Vancouver BC. I grew up in Ladner on the Fraser river so I’ve always loved boats ! I am slowly (as I work full time) fixing up my 1973 Albin Vega to hopefully one day untie the lines and be a full time cruiser. I really love how you guys go into depth about your thinking behind projects and so on. Keep up the great work and I really hope to one day meet you guys out there! Cheers and love the videos!
I'm so sorry to hear about yours and Bradys mom. That decision to move a very close loved one to long term care is one of the harder decisions you will ever make in your lives. April 7th my sister passed away just before she was to be moved to long term care. We are in WA state so the icu she was in only allowed us to visit one at a time and only for 10 minutes, and that's the only time we were allowed to visit. Zoom was one hour visits once a day, from 10pm to 11pm. This was absolutely the worst 2 months of my life, while she was in their on a vent all alone. I am happy for your mom and you guys getting to visit togeather. Stay strong guys. I am sending prayers for your mom and all you guys. Much love!
Nice to see Brady after a long long time missed him. Good to see that all the work which needed to be done is getting done though expensive. Kee it up guys love you peace
Brian, Absolutely loved the time-lapse of Delos at the dock, the tide, the moon, and the sun. Great music choice as well. Wonderful!
to be honest I would have been like yep, my days of using a whisker pole are over unless I find something in the trash that might work haha
This episode made me sentimental because of what Kazza said about Sierra needing to meet family and also for seeing Brady again. He is so much part of the SV Delos journey and I watched all those adventures when he and her girlfriend were part of the crew. You guys really make beautiful reflections about life from the point of view as sailors. I also like it when Brian explains all those technical things like replacing the pole. Great! Thank you so much for an enjoyable and meaningful 30-minute KZread time. God bless your trip.
When I see a box of parts like those that you picked up at the machinist I can’t help but be impressed. Those things are art and good machinists truly are artists. They are masters of a wonderful craft. You were lucky to find a good shop like that.
Always makes me smile when I see a new video of you adorable pirates :) ❤️
I had a smile on my face this whole video. So good to enjoy friends and family. Thank you for taking us along.
What better way to start my Friday than with a Delos video. So glad things are working out for you, thanks.
I cannot stop watching this channel, you guys are incredible with your travels, and your filming is top notch, Brian...you and your whole family are incredible, OH! and if you ever plan on having Taylor back on Delos....PLEASE DO :)
Soooooo yay Brady. Friday is the best day Delos day!!!!!
Totally THRILLLLLLED to have found this amazing, authentic sailing channel! Dudes and kick-ass women are relentless in their sailing passion/expertise, in every element they encounter. Those powerful, unforgiving gnarly-*ss seas are breathtaking. Great cinematography! This is true survival in ocean-to-ocean sailing.
Love the hugs from family, hope your mom is doing good.love from Canada
I love the ingenuity of Brian. I like watching the tech part how to does thing like Mcgyver. I do not even have a boat but I am addicted to the show. This is what I watch every Friday and keeps on anticipating for it. I keep watching how he integrates the old and new system having the radar on the laptop computer. I also like how he makes the boat green tech.
LETS GO!!! I dont know why but this episode got me hyped.
Seeing the little nugget always gives me a smile. So much joy and fun on her little face.
It's incredible watching you work Brian. Your knowledge of how each part of the boat works, and starting with checking the most fundamental potential problems until you solve it is always impressive and educational. Love it more than bikini girls ;)
What a great episode! So much to take in. The tank fix on Calico looks perfect! The new pole is looking awesome! And oh my gosh... when Brady stepped over that rail onto Delos... my eyes filled with tears!! So happy to see him with you guys!!🥰🥰 Then the Pube trap at the end!! Lmao!🤣🤣🤣 ❤️🥰👊😎
Brady! We miss you and Blue. Please come back and visit soon 🙂

thank you for sharing how your mom is doing. very sad when that moment comes but she is still with you and that matters! lots of love and enjoyed the project coverage and family reunion!!! oh yea!!!
Family time is the best. Especially after covid and not seeing everyone for a year.I love it even more.❤️
Makes me miss you being all together! So impressed with Brian as always hes so damn smart! 👏👏👏
Excellent to see Brady bulking up for the winter !!
Nice to have a glimpse of Senor Brady. Missed his adventures with Delos. 💪👍💖
So pumped that you guys got to see Brady & the rest of the family!! ♥️
These folks have set me on a lifelong mission to live on a sailboat. I am getting closer every day. Three years is the ideal but five at absolute most. Just for this goal I'm eternally grateful.
Shots/editing just keep better and better. I love the time lapse shots! Also enjoy the teaching aspect of boating/repair. Keep up the great work.
Nice to see Brady Who came to visit.....this loveable family.
My father always told me that everyone pays stupid tax at some points in life, the only difference is how much you pay 🙃
Cross your fingers - hold your thumbs?! I've never heard that second part but I love it. Thanks for a neat new saying Kazza!

Whether you cross your fingers or hold your thumbs is a sign of cultural identity and signals your country of origin. Americans cross their fingers, but in Sweden people “håller tummarna” (literally hold their thumbs)-both for the same reason: to wish someone the best of luck.🤞👍
Good to see Jordan still involved with the project. I was thinking there was a familiar hand in the edit.
As a Dad of two, you hit me in my weak spot...your kid is super cute...enjoy those days cuz they are precious memories.
They gonna follow yaw around the world. They better get them a vlog started now and get some patreons haha. God bless be safe guys and little bit is so precious. Much respect from southeast texas.
Happy for you guys! Good to see family when you haven’t in a long time. Miss Señor Brady but happy for you guys! Brian, Kazza, and baby Nugs.. Fair winds and following seas.
*checks watch... Friday PM. Time for a 🍺 and a Delos video! ⛵️ Weekend started right!
I love watching your journey. Looking forward to watching many more journeys. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
I don’t comment much but I must say that this episode very much reminds me of the episodes that originally got me hooked. Brian, I envy your intelligence AND patience during boat projects. Karen is in a different role as a mom but it fits her well as she still brings a lot to the table with editing and research, aside from the obvious female angle to the show. My favorite part is to see Brian and Senor Brady get to be big and little brother again. I’m also into the cruisers academy but Senor has to almost be Brian sometimes. When you guys are together, he once again gets to be the crazy little brother. Your dad is always the same...a hoot! I’m sorry to hear about your mom but sometimes it’s better for them because of the on site assistance sometimes required when we can’t be there all of the time. I wish Blue could’ve made it. I have sent her my notes from my OUPV Captain’s classes to hopefully help her along with her journey to become official. So good to see the good times again!! Be safe and fair winds!! Look me up on Facebook sometime at Facebook.com/marc.kenney1
Nicely done video. Just the right length. Really good editing. You have another life as a film/commercial/video director waiting for you on land! And Nugget will be your first star!! On a separate note.....the pics of the party boaters....I wonder if that's a study in contrast for you after spending a decade on the boat. When I was in travelling mode, I learned so much about life. I came to realize that the greatest joy came from the interpersonal experiences with different cultures and all the different people along the way. A humbling experience as well. Delos has been on a long trip. And, from where I sit, you're a long way from the party boat scene.
Always such fun and happy vibes in your videos 😄 happy sailing and sailing misadventures 😂 thank you for sharing it all with us!
i love you guys! you all bring so much joy to the world. thank you for sharing your journey with the world. truly inspiring!
so fun to see the gang back together.
Hi, I have been following for awhile, I love how as 'Delusions' we get to experience, albiet vicariously, your world and how effortlessly it is that you deal with any situation in a wonderfully matter of fact way!
Thanks for sharing all of this. Big learning experience for all of us, you guys are awesome. Appreciate it.
I liked the flood tide time lapse at 18:46. I could almost hear the sucking sound of keel getting pulled out of the mud.
I love the boat work projects about as much as I do the beach parties.
I am always amazed at the fun an giggles you can eek out of the most unfunny situations... An turn it into a learning adventure... Thanks for showing how to make even the most cuss word inducing problem an giggling event to a high 5 it's done event.... Thanks for the life lessons... Waiting for my Delos merch.... Excited!! ✌🏻💗😊❣️
You guys rock, and are phenomenal parents to boot...all the best!
Been following for years and you have finally convinced me not to try cruising. You are a genius and able to fix or repair your boat. I would have to contract it all out or sink. I think following you is the best option. Peace. What a crew!
Great episode! Thanks for sharing
So thanks guys for making me late, was on my way to gym then work but I get a notification about the new video. Of course I stop what I’m doing to watch the latest Delos video. Worth every bit of 25 mins. Love you guys have a safe passage across the ocean. Thanks again for another stellar video. ❤️🤙🏽😎

So happy this channel keeps on going. This channel is still as entertaining as ever and the story always is interesting. I really appreciate all you do to keep us entertained and Delos is more than a boat it’s a lifestyle. You inspire me every Friday! All you guys work so hard! Hope to see Delos make the sail to Hawaii someday! If so I’ll drop off a few cases of local beer! 🍻 keep it up SV Delos
What a beautiful family reunion! The Nugget gets cuter all the time! ❤️
Beautiful job, guys!
eek it’s the next Saturday already and no Delos Video. I hope you made the passage to Panama alright and didn’t get stuck in the canal “Ever Given” style!
So nice to see even a partial reunion. Plus younger ones!

Hi Brian, I love you guys; every one. Awesome project too. (BTW, did you know that, if you place your seat belt under your arm for comfort while driving, you will likely collapse your left lung in a collision. A paramedic friend of mine told me that the resulting collapsed lung can only be re-inflated in a hospital; they can't do it in the ambulance. Unfortunately, the accident victim usually dies on the way to the hospital. So Brian, please, just toss the dumb seatbelt over your shoulder like you're supposed to and live, okay? Be there for Nugget 10 years from now.)
Good to see Brady and Papa Delos again.
Another fine program.Thankyou
Really like when you help people out👏🏻👌🏻❤️
Hire a local fuel polisher was my first thought in the opening minute!
Projects, Projects and more Projects. Good to have family around. I was born in Orlando, live in Deland. The baby is so cute, bet she is a hand full at times, keep her spoiled.
I love everything about this 💞🎉🧁🔥😁
Delos there is always some D/A Neighbor that wants to be the covenant Gestapo when you're doing your best to get your equipment safe
Would love to see brady and blue come back for a more long term stint. Great to see brady come down to florida
I started watching Delos on episode 15...way back in Bundaberg! In almost 8 years I have never left a comment but I felt I had to on this video! Why was there so little footage of Brady!? I don't want to hate on Calico Skies but honestly who cares about them or their boat?? Watching you dig through their storage locker and repair their fuel tank was painful!! Brady is a legend and is a HUGE reason the channel got so successful!! To only show a couple small clips of him is almost criminal I'm just completely baffled at the whole situation....Did Brady not want to be on camera? Did you want to focus on family time and not film? I don't want to come across as negative!! I love Brian, Kazza, and Nugget and I'm so happy that y'all are forging a new path and continuing the journey ... I just can't comprehend wasting minutes of an episode on Calico Skies when we could have been hearing more from Brady
Love the Nugget, she always makes me smile,... Peace, love and harmony to you
So cool! I'd imagine within the next few years anything you need and can order on Amazon etc. can be delivered by drone right to Delos. God Bless you all and stay safe :)
Much respect for machinists - some are true artists with metal
Dude, The pole looks like a windsurfer mast. We reside in the Cape Fear Coast and could have totally hooked you up. Glad you've made it down the "ditch" and helped out your fellow cruisers. Going to use your starboard fuel tank hack on our Bayfield. Fair wind and you know the rest...
Almost 700k! Looking good guys. I'm still bummed we missed you when you were in the Dry Tortugas.
Oh no... Sorry to hear that Brian. It's been a rough trip southward for sure. Glad you guys are safe and healthy :-)
Lvivske, hilarious. They have very good beer in Livi, especially the beer halls and virgin beer!
As always guys , Lekker episode!!!
Bummer…Even Amel doesn’t have all the replacement parts? Doesn’t say much for them☹️ But move along anyway and enjoy when ya can 😎
That all looks sooo familiar ! Great result (s)
I am not a sailor but I love your videos and always have a happy feeling followed by a sad thought that it’s over for another week.
Absolutely loved this episode! I think nugget has turned into little monster nugget! Haha 😂 so great to see y’all with family! Blessings of love, happiness and good health. Cheers 🍻
