Join us for the final leg of our Atlantic crossing where we encounter heavy weather and rough seas on our Beneteau Oceanis 40. With 600 miles and four days before remaining a large area of high pressure and strong NE trade moves in, accompanied by a very confused sea state. By far the most hectic sail we have ever experienced and well out of our comfort zone.
Read more about this experience in our blogpost below
sailingbeaver.wordpress.com/2...
A couple from Australia and Norway who set sails from Norway on a Beneteau Oceanis 40 in late 2018 to explore the world by sailboat. (Yup, another sailing couple doing the standard route and documenting it on film.)

    The Quartermaster• This is the difference between your sailing videos and others who don’t want you to see how they show poor judgement and helm skills when the weather continues to deteriorate and things start falling apart. You guys are truly competent sailors! It’s the price you pay knowing that this is the reality when blue water sailing. Great Job!

    You just can’t begin to understand how scary this can be until you’ve done it. We had the same conditions but with a counter current coming in to Isla Mujeres when we lost our steering. Thank God we had an emergency tiller made before we left the US. We didn’t have so far to go fortunately. We literally surfed into Isla. Never been so relieved to put down the anchor! Great video and am looking forward to following your adventures.

    Love the buzz of a good swell. Nice helming. When things get lumpy ‘follow the mast’... when the boat starts to lurch to port - steer to port. Use the mast as an indicator, especially at night. You probably know this anyway with how you were doing - great job.

  • @ian_griffiths

    Thanks for the nice words. I guess we do this but yeah at night it’s tricky to see the instruments so that’s a good idea to follow the mast at night. Cheers.

    Thanks for the info. Just found this. I've no idea about sailing and was wondering what they were steering towards. I'm a flier and you basically do the opposite in a plane to level the wings in the bumps (but you don't fight it too hard - ease your way through). I guess if I was steering that boat I'd end up rolling the thing.

    4:14 is wonderful sailing!! Good breeze, down wind, minimal white caps, that is some good stuff. That's in my 26 foot Pierson! Happy to be here. However, a couple minutes later in the 9:00's that's a bit more robust, but still!

    The guy in the baseball cap needs to be deposited in Bridgetown with the rest of the garbage. Your helmsman needs to learn to feel the boat, stop looking at the waves. Anticipate, typical Brit congratulate each other on achievements in failure and seamanship.

  • @SailingBeaver

    @SailingBeaver

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sounds like your a solo sailor there Richard, if that’s how you treat your crew. In our opinion the crew did an excellent job at helming in those conditions. If your attempting to comment on seamanship try something with a little more substance then ‘feel the boat’, then maybe we can actually learn something from you. Btw Aussies mate, not Brits!

    Hi Guys n’ Girl. I Saw this video trough, an felt very intens about it. I took in companionship with my nephew , his wife and their 2 daughters, the same tour Cap Verde/Mindelo to Babados November 2019, and we had about the same experience the last 4 days out og 19 days. Very heavy wind swirls with heavy rain,- in wich the boad 38food Benetton first, kind of surfed. After about an hour the rain stopped and the wind got a bit down, and very big waves 5-6 m cought up with us. Some crashed down in cockpit, and one smashed so hard at the rear end of the boad, that we got a crack, and began to take water in. We also lost power for some hours before finding the problem. We glued and repaired in morning light, and sawed courage for next swirl. The swirls had a kind of cycle thing,- and went back 2-3 times every Night. Our wind at highest before loosing power mesured 38spm. But in Night swirls was the Wind much higher. We kept calm and all went well. After arrival at George Town /. Babardos yacht club we slept 18 hours, and got drunk for the next 24. Kind of taking pressure I gues . Regards Jens-Otto. Sailing Embla. DK

    Awesome! After a life in dingy dark recording studios as an engineer, it was suggested I take up sailing now I am retiring. I watched this and have decided I am never going to get in a sailing boat...... ever ! ( Maybe a pedalo ) Unbelievable - I admire your courage and skill - what a memory to hold. Thanks for making the gripping video - worthy of being on TV. Fair winds and fun to you all......

    Not sure how these kids have that much experience. Those conditions require decades of seasoning. Not going to be much of an aft seat sailor but the sail handling there was pitiful.

  • @SailingBeaver

    @SailingBeaver

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t think we are old enough to have decades of experience yet and this is the first and only boat we have sailed on. In saying that, we still believe we did a reasonable job considering the conditions but of course learnt a few different tactics to slightly season us for the next round. Which sail handling are you referring to and what was incorrect about about it? Pitiful seems abit harsh.

    @@SailingBeaver Looked like you did very well. Hand steering in those conditions takes a lot of concentration. Did you consider heaving to or going under bares poles? Your biggest risk was broaching which could result in a knock down with potentially serious damage to boat and crew. I was in similar conditions to that in Pacific and we kept sailing on like you did, but it might not always be the best strategy. We were in more of "Bluewater" boat with a slightly better capsize ratio, not that I think it makes a huge difference.
