Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and KZread sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 KZread subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

I don't drink sweetened coffee drinks, but when that image of a sweetened coffee drink popped up, I thought "I want that!!!" But after I few moments I came back down to earth, and thought, "Do I really need that? No I don't." But seriously, Thanks a lot Doc. The way you present the kidney problems is reassuring and very helpful. My particular kidney degeneration appears to be a result of age, high blood pressure, Covid and, the final kicker, foolishness for taking NSAIDs for the after effects of Covid (Meloxicam). I was in hospital for heart failure and there they picked up my kidneys as poor performing, with a GFR of 30. Last time I tested it was 46, so I just need to keep living a healthy lifestyle.

This is very good. Actually I am a registered dietitian specializes in plant based nutrition (this is my personal account so not advertising). We found out my dad’s kidney function are lower than average people in his age. From there on, he reduce or almost cut off his surgery drinking. Since he lives with me so our diet is mainly plant based and we only eat veggie burger at fast food once a week. Wow we almost match all your advice, not we, my dad and his kidney did improve last time when he had blood test. So what you said was very true, I was was 👍 wow wow. Only thing I would do is replace with meat with tofu. But yes it is wonderful to be confirmed. I am going to show my father this video although he doesn’t understand English because half of time he doesn’t even believe in my advice了😆(yet he paid for my education for dietitian), I keep have to show him other experts advice for him to believe. But I am definitely not expert in kidney health, so I am just so happy we are doing right direction after watch your video. Thank you so much, This is so helpful. Greatly appreciate it!

So glad to read that your dad's condition improved !! Yes,plant based diet is the best for so - many diseases ,kidney failure is one of 'em !! Vegan diet is the very best for a healthy life over all !! But ,not for more than 10 ,15 years at once ! From my own experiences. I was a vegan for 17 years ,now been being a vegetarian for 13 years .👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞

I am not familiar with kidney health but I thought he can do dialysis. Right? Because for some reason the country I was born has highest rate of dialysis (Taiwan) anyway he still has hope. Just find a good kidney doctor (nephrologist) to take good care your dad.

Any meat basically will put a higher workload on the kidney. I try going on a plant based diet, most of the time. With one kidney and a Cr of 1.2 at 63 yrs old, I need to take care of my one kidney. I Also looked up foods that are good for the kidney, i.e. parsley, lemon, turmeric, etc.

No harm to blood sugar, no metallic after taste like this over hyped stevia. I am noticing another craze ingredient in many foods, xanthan gum. I gave it to my mother twice and twice she vomited. I am convinced that food processors intentionally add things to damage health so the Hospital Colossus can get income, as everything is owned by the same royalist Wall Street Episcopalians in The Pilgrims Society, which has had the world by the throat since 1902.

I’m kinda a stubborn old guy and wouldn’t do dialysis that they wanted me to. I’m stage 5 and was at the end I decided to go all out for a major diet change My nephrologist and cardiologist made recommendations and I did lots of research, A lot depends on what stage you’re in and it’s not easy at all. I went mostly plant based diet Restricted for potassium, phosphates and liquids at 40 ox per day. If I eat meats it’s only in small portions like 3 oz and limit that to beef, chicken, fish and some sea foods like shrimp and no pork. There are a good many fruits and vegetables that are high in potassium as well. If you have internet access there are charts and sites that show high and low potassium foods and amounts. When I go shopping I have my phone access and if there are doubts I look up that particular food. Totally eliminate any processed foods a lot of so called healthy foods are not really for a low potassium diet. I’m no expert by far and I love to eat and it’s not easy because you’ll get no or little help from family or friends because they don’t understand Some favorite sites I use are Best Kidney Diet with Hazel OO kidney with Katherine and this cooking doc site. There are others that explain a lot and give advice be careful and decide what’s best for you. You should have access to your medical stats and numbers that will give you a guideline of what you need to raise or lower. That’s where the doctor and dieticians should give you the help you need. So many doctors just want to shuffle you off to dialysis and that’s a decision you will have to make if so. Ask lots of questions and don’t be shy about it if the doctor doesn’t give you information you need try to get another. I wish you good luck and say it’s not easy but it’s doable I hope this has helped you some and you can ask me anything I too am hyperkalemia stage 5 but with dedication I went from 10% function to just over 20% now. So it can be done.

🥦I have IGAN, and my wife is a nutritionist. Here's our straightforward approach to reducing red meat for the two of us. For lunch (Monday to Friday), we do bi-weekly meal prep, usually on Saturday nights (takes about 2~3h). We store our meals in the freezer and heat them in the microwave at lunchtime. First batch: 10 servings of fish, 10 servings of chicken. Second batch: 10 servings of chicken, 10 servings of red meat. Batch one: 5 meals with fish paired with some veggies. 5 meals with fish paired with different veggies. 5 meals with chicken along with some veggies. 5 meals with chicken with another set of different veggies. Batch two: 5 meals with chicken along with some veggies. 5 meals with chicken with another set of different veggies. 5 meals with red meat along with some veggies. 5 meals with red meat with another set of different veggies. This means we consume just 1/4 of red meat for lunch in a month! And a lot of veggies!!! 🍽🥦

When I stopped eating all processed carbs and everything with sugar and all grains and stopped eating plants except a few non starchy veg which I cook thoroughly, my intestines thanked me for the change. After a day of diarrhoea when they cleaned out all the much I had been putting into them, all the insoluble fibre they hated, my belly deflated from a balloon size to normal. No more bloating, no more flatulence, no more discomfort. Plants are poor nutritionally as the human digestive system is not equipped to extract their nutrients effectively and is unable to neutralize the toxic substances in plants. Kidneys hate sugar not protein in moderation and they hate sugar more than they hate fat. A high plant diet means stuffing the colon with fibre which aggravates it and makes a stool too large for the colon, causing constipation. What kidneys need, as well as arteries is a diet low in sugar which comes from a diet high not just in refined sugar but in excessive consumption of plants and grains and bakery products. Humans aren't rabbits who eat their first poo nor are they cows which have two stomachs. If humans ate the same diet now as 100 + years ago, coronary heart disease would be virtually unknown, as would inflammatory skin conditions and IBS.

I get it. However, for people with kidney disease who are serious about improving kidney health, I think you should be more direct and just tell them: "Eliminate these foods from your diet if you want to live." Otherwise, people tend to think, "Oh then I can safely eat these foods" and they won't really change their eating habits. From my perspective, eating these things is the reason people have sick kidneys to begin with, on top of alcohol, cigarettes and obesity. Saying 'eat less' is like telling a smoker to 'cut down.' Or "use the patch." As long as they are getting nicotine in their system they will remain hooked. It's the same with addiction to fast food. I don't wear a white coat but my advice is: if you want to extend your life and have a good quality of life, cut out these foods entirely. Get serious about eating a plant based diet that will help you lose the weight and feel SO good. 🙂

Hello Doc" Thanks a bunch for your advice! If meat is so unhealthy for the kidneys why are there studies out there that carnivore diet is so helpful and healthy for people with kidney disease? Are they blinding us or what is going on. So many docs refere to these studies. Ok, keto could maybe be healthy if so much plants are incorporated in it, the fatintake is not so high and the protein intake is moderate. But how can carnivore be helpful for kidneys if other studies or the normal medical guidelines say: eat not as much protein?
