10 Dietary Steps to Help You Prevent and Manage Kidney Disease | The Cooking Doc®

Don’t let the cardiologists and poets fool you: your kidneys are the real
heart and soul of your body. (Of course, as a kidney doctor, I’m a little
biased.)
When patients come into my office, I use a 10-step plan to set them on the path to kidney health. Some steps may take you months to achieve, and that’s OK. Even if you slowly incorporate these steps into your diet over the course of years, you’re moving toward a lifetime of health and wellness.
Today I am going to share these ten steps with you. For more detailed information, you can check out my book with the links below.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and KZread sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 KZread subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

I did actually wake up and say that. I woke up with pain and was promptly told by the doctor that it was not a kidney stone, but... I truly said: "I'm reforming my tea-drinking ways. I'm not letting these babies (kidneys) fail."

I got your book for my father. Plus, I taught him how to read labels what he buys when he shops for foods. He has learned from that & makes better selections.

@@brandoncomeau130 I’m glad you are able to have your dialysis at home. It must be so much more comfortable for you. Is that the main difference between the two? One you have at a dialysis center and the other you have at home? Otherwise they do the job equally well? I know the wait is long for a donor transplant. I hear there are many lists and you can get on more than one. It must be a difficult thing to have to wait or even to find a donor on your own through family, friends or a stranger. I wish more people agreed to be donors. I wish you the very best. Keep on fighting and doing everything you can, which I’m sure you are already doing. Hopefully the medical and scientific communities will pour more money into research and treatments. The U.S. has more CKD than any other country. Blessings to you. 🙏🏻

Dr. Blake, I would appreciate your opinion on my kidney issue, I don’t have a normal kidney issue. I have damaged tubulars, Dr, does not know how this happened. I am 75, went from high third to low 5th stage in 3 months. My GFR IS 11. I need to get it higher and stabilize at a higher rate. It was a shock ending up in hospital inMarch 22’ at a GFR of 12. I got to 18 for 1 blood test then down a lot then up to 16. Then down to 13, 12 and at 11 now for several months. My dr. Said I didn’t need a special diet since I have normal sodium, potassium, phosphorus, etc. just low hemoglobin which I have to have shots for more blood.

Thanks for the information. Does someone born with a solitary kidney need a special diet
Hi Doc,ever since I was a kid ( I'm 54yrs) I've been terrified of going to doc's offices .I had many memorable "encounters" when I was a child(dentists, had a wart on my eyelid they had to hold me down to chemically burn it,etc,etc),-- and it left me not wanting to have anything to do with Doc's😅. Anyways my question is,I might have kidney issues ( from months of drinking alcohol every day )---#1 how effective are the at home testing kits that you can order and send them back to labs? #2 which one do you recommend? And lastly --- if you do things right, can you bring back kidneys to normal healthy condition? Thank you Doctor.👍👍👍👍👍

It is very important to see a doctor and get a test with them in office. I understand the anxiety of visiting a doctor, especially when you do not know them. If you see a doctor and get a diagnosis- there are many things you can do to help improve kidney function and slow the progression of kidney disease. You can never cure kidney disease, but you can do many things to stop it from getting worse. Good luck to you Rigo!

Hello doc your video is very informative, thanks a lot, i have been having left upper back pain on and off..I consulted a urologist and they said my kidneys are normal. My creatinine is also very normal.I am very worried that it might be due to my shock wave last may 2023.My urinalysis is also normal but i wonder why i i feel like my left kidney is palpitating😟.Please enlighten mi doc
Does your cookbook have nutritional information ie. Sodium and potassium.
My son is Stage 3. In your opinion should he be on a low protein diet? We had a renal dietitian and she said yes but we feel he looks malnourished now.
What studies do you have that shows that a plant based diet is better than a low carb diet? I’ve read numerous studies that say a low carb (keto) diet can actually improve creatinine and gfr numbers in many people.

Animal proteins which are cheese & meats are harder on the kidneys than plant proteins. Also low carb is usually low fiber which is not good for kidneys or cholesterol. Ckd patients are higher risk for heart disease. Low carb has also been shown to be harmful.
I was ask by doctor not to take protein plant cos of my kidney and am diabetic I have been avoiding protein plant for 2 yrs now. And I have been founding this difficult what can I do

Thank you, Doc. I am afraid to eat food rich in potassium and phosphorus although my potassium and phosphorus levels are within normal limits. My latest eGFR is 51.5. Also, I am now hesitant to have fish, chicken, and egg. I rarely eat red meat and I miss eating sushi already. I live in Japan and this country has lots of delicious food. Hahaha. Videos don't replace a doctor seeing you in person. But let's say someone just wants to have a healthier lifestyle to prevent future problems. Actual doctors can offer good info in videos. If anyone says research shows something, I also look up the original study if it's possible to access it.
