Unhealthy Plant Based Diets and Chronic Kidney Disease

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Let's delve into a topic that's crucial yet often overlooked: the impact of unhealthy plant-based diets on kidney disease. While the benefits of plant-based diets are well-known, it's important to recognize that not all plant-based choices are beneficial.

Same boat. Actually went down to low stage 4 too. You're not too late to maintain and maybe even get better. Through plant based diet, exercise, and meds, got my blood pressure under control and made my symptoms go away. Make changes and be smart about it and you will see improvements in your numbers like I did. It will always be in your mind but flip your mindset to use that to push yourself and you'll eventually feel much better about your direction.

So happy to see you are doing these 30 minute webinars. They are extremely helpful. And I really enjoy being able to focus on just one presenter. Don’t get me wrong, I love Michelle, but it personally works better for me when I can listen to a nephrologist uninterrupted. I’m getting valuable information on one specific topic for 30 minutes , without the bouncing back and forth between nephrology and renal diet. Your other videos with Michelle are also very valuable , and she is an excellent renal dietician, but I’m also glad you are offering 30 minutes of uninterrupted information strictly on kidney health and the do’s and don’t’s. And I also love how you break down the science of how the kidney works. The mechanics of kidney function in relation to food intake, etc. This is what I want to know. Lastly, you explain the information very well, so that non- medical professionals can understand it. Thank you, doctor. I just came across this video today, Friday, which means that this video was done last Friday and there will be another tonight! Yay! I’m in Ohio, so I think it will be 8 pm my time. Looking forward to it!!! I hope you keep these 30 minute webinars going. Thank you for sacrificing your time.

Im open to doing whats most optimal for my health. Thank you!

Question: How about patients with kidney stones but without kidney disease, can you give them nuts / soy since it is high in uric acid / oxalates. Do you have alternative as sources of protein, considering the patients are not ckd/esrd. Another Question: In CKD patient with stones, how do you manage fluid intake? Thanks alot doc!

Everything is a balance. If you do a 24-hour urine test, you can see where the opportunities for improvement are. The big thing with kidney stones is hydration, hydration and more hydration. Specifically, aiming for 3Liters of water/day. The rest we base on actual results to decide what to limit instead of just a blanket no.

A little fresh lemon juice can reverse early stage kidney stones. I was given this advice from a nurse practitioner, and it worked, symptoms went after about 3 weeks. You don’t need much, half a lemon squeezed on my salad 3 or 4 times a week and a glass of water with each main meal did the trick for me.

I am on a very low protein diet...high carb (60-70%) but lower fat...I do eat a few "white carbs" offset, however, by whole grains, esp. limited processed grains like oats and Wasa rye crispbread. I actually walked around my kitchen and computed the ratio of cars:fiber and marked all packages of grains! But, I need calories, so I do use bean threads every day...with the greens I grow in my garden. Overall, stable since 2009, lost weight, BMI 18, no CRP (so low not in range)...I eat NO meat, fish, eggs, nuts, dairy, and very limited legumes...string beans OK, and can deal with some chickpeas/hummus as amino acid compostion is lower than kidney beans, for example. I use pharm grade amino acids and my kidney doctor finally gets what I am doing and am telling people to eat less meat. It's a step in the right direction, I guess! The Walser book got me started and I have since worked out my own eating pattern and use Cronometer to track everything I ingest. (since 2009...can compare my blood tests to various eating periods!)

Hello Dr. Hashmi. I came upon your webinars by chance. After this evening's session, a 4 yr old lecture on plant based diet started playing and I watched it through. Within the lecture, you were talking about how everyone is obsessed about protein and you talked about the secretion of albumin as a result of eating protein, emphasizing that protein is not as important as people think. In another webinar, you spoke about muscle and bone density loss resulting from weight loss (especially fast weight loss). My question is, what nutrients are important to recover muscle not only during weight loss not during weight training? I'm confused about that. Even my doctor thinks it's all about protein. Thanks.

Yes, if you drink a lot of water before the test, it will dilute the blood test and make it seem like eGFR is better than it actually is

@@SELFPrinciple Well, if that's the case, then not drinking enough water before the test would give a false lower eGFR. You could wake up in a warm room, perhaps perspired a bit, urinate, and maybe your body has lost some water and needs more water! Also, how come the National Kidney Foundation doesn't say not to drink too much water before the test? From the National Kidney Foundation: "Ask your health care professional if there are any special instructions to follow. You may need to avoid eating or drinking anything (except water) for several hours before the test. You may also be asked not to eat any cooked meat the night before the test. It can increase the level of creatinine in your blood and affect your eGFR results."

I should hope it is more than one glass! The kidneys need to produce at least approximately 1 litre of urine per day to excrete the urea generated by the body during the day. If you do not drink enough to replace this 1 litre plus any other losses (from skin, gut), you will become dehydrated and the kidneys will reduce GFR and urine output to conserve water. If your GFR is low due to kidney disease and you are not dehydrated, you cannot increase your GFR by drinking more water."

The proof that animal fats are healthier and chemically different to plant oils is that they get the heart logo because they lower cholesterol which is not a good thing if my body is making it. There is a reason why my body makes a certain amount of cholesterol and I don't think ingesting bad things to alter it is wise.

Last year I had stage 3 kidney disease and in three months my kidneys went back to normal. Thanks to God and changing my diet it happened. I mainly ate vegetables, fruit in moderation and fish. I must admit that I still had homemade mayo made with two eggs but it was only a tsp or two. I still followed a low carb diet. I sometimes had some brown rice not much. For years I had tumors in my kidneys and that went too, by going on the keto diet and prayers. Now I have chicken some days and now and then red meat. I keep my portion in control. I drink decaf coffee and tea. I eat nuts again keeping the portion in control. I have keto chocolate fudge sometimes but it's so good the way I make it that I am thinking of making it often. I went off chocolate when I had problems last year with the kidneys and tea and coffee and eggs. Hope this helps

One of the hardest parts of healthy food is bread. If you bake your own , look for organic wholemeal flour. There are also white stone ground bread flours that still contain the wheat germ and some of the fibre but it is difficult to find. There are 5 problems with a lot of commercial bread. 1 lack of fibre ( even brown bread often has no wheat germ and only a small amount of fibre has been added back in) 2 very finely milled down to tiny starch grains so the starch is released as sugar very quickly in the gut when you eat the bread 3 inorganic flour may contain glyphosate from grain conditioning prior to harvest. 4 very short cooking times, often by steaming and then browning the outside rather than proper baking 5 added chemical emulsifiers to make the bread very soft. You can buy inorganic good quality bread flour that is just as good as organically certified flour, it is often from smaller flour mills. Good quality flour has not been pre harvest conditioned, or treated with insecticide while the grain is in long storage, but there is no way of finding out this information for commercial bread.

Not convinced by this, as many plants are rich in oxalates, which are the basis of kidney stones and rheumatoid arthritis. Animal proteins are superior to plant proteins, as they are more immediately available to the body.

You need to break down long chains into individual amino acids so no, not quickly available. Also the body recycles amino acids up to 200 grams per day, so no worries about plant proteins being inferior. But the old theories are still quite popular, especially amongst carnivore enthusiasts.
