After a year of being on keto I discovered I was eating a very high amount of oxalates in the form of almond flour biscuits, almond butter, spinach, dark chocolate, and tea. I was aware of oxalates causing kidney stones, but did not know oxalates also accumulate throughout the tissues of the body. This causes many painful conditions including fibromyalgia, joint, bladder, and vulvar pain. Also, eliminating oxalates from your diet is a process called "oxalate dumping" that can cause itchy rashes and other strange symptoms. I had a rash when I was sick and couldn't eat much for a few weeks. Pretty sure this was the cause. This is a not adequately addressed by keto proponents. I would like to see warning labels on high oxalate foods! I am ketovore now, working on purging the oxalates.

Cacao is very complex, maybe the most on this list. If you go to base ingredients, no dutch process, no sugar, no separation and recombination of solids and fats, the pharmacology is fairly complex and poorly understood just from a psychoactive perspective. What I can say is it won't make you fat, you'll net lose weight. I actually became underweight eating a lot of it, and wasn't overweight to start with. Most of the loss seemed to be fat stores but I didn't really use any metrics or have an established baseline.

@Mike Collon I never heard of a carnivore MD over 90. In fact, I never heard of a carnivore over 90. There are cultures and people that eat a fair amount of meat have good longevity, but they also tend to eat lots of fruits and vegetables as well. There are a fair amount of people that are plant based or that are mostly plant based over the age of 90. Strict carnivore is bit of a gamble because it is a new diet. That may be one reason why we have no known carnivores over 90. Native tribes that follow diets close to carnivorism die early and do not have good longevity. That's a fact. Though that could be due largely in part to unsanitary conditions or lack of modern medicine. Exercise is major component of longevity and may be more important or equally important than diet. Many of the carnivores seem to realize this. So perhaps we may see carnivores having longevity in the distant future. Only time will tell.

@@No_Frills_Carnivore Humans have been eating nuts for countless thousands of years. What makes some people fragile and unable to do what everyone else can easily do?

Looking at Chocolate today and it is very hard to find any chocolate without soy lecithin and all the seed oils: Hershey's is one of the worst selections for chocolate. In my younger days, I would almost eat my weight in chocolate bars, brownies, cakes and pies, but as a senior, they are off limits along with all the processed food the younger me consumed: cheese curls and the endless supply of processed junk. I do feel much better after switching to carnivore: no more arthritis or high blood pressure!!!

Nuts and seeds do in fact go very well with a grain of salt.

I melt food grade cocoa butter and stir in cocoa,or cacao powder, tested for heavy metals, 1 to 1 and I get delicious bitter homemade chocolate. Works for me.
