I might be wrong but I don't think you've already shared your thoughts on micro brands like Baltic or Farer. I know it is somehow controversial in the milieu but those 2 for instance are really affordable and in my opinion more desirable than the last Seiko generation (I would have mentioned an orient star, way more inspired models than Seiko recently and I am a Seiko guy!)

You had me until you listed affordable as up to $4000 USD. Defining affordable is highly subjective however, I would argue a more universal definition of affordable would be closer to a maximum of $1000 USD. Above that, you start getting into the various categories of luxury.

I get that the "affordable" IS relative but anything over 1000.00 usd isn't, for most people, I might even go as far as anything over 500.00 usd. Good video, love your enthusiasm though 👍 As a side note I have 4 Vostoks since 2016 and 1 70's Era Raketa and zero issues with any of them. For "perspective" my most expensive watch is the Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Auto 750.00.usd (995.00 retail) I bought new in 2017, I have a small collection, Seiko, Casio, Hamilton, Citizen, Benarus, Zelos and my first watch purchase, when I was 19 (1973) a Pulsar p2 2900 still working today!

Agree...$4000 is not "affordable". Maybe in Jenni's world :) The word affordable should always be used in context to the average median wage. In the US the average median for a household is $34k, after tax that's $27k to support a family. So spending $4k on a watch is 15% of that total income. I wouldn't class this as affordable, it would have to be at least under 5%, so maybe $1500 is more reasonable in the context of the US. Affordability is very subjective though, it really depends on what you value? I'm sure some people will disagree with what I have said here too :)

you're arguably working with the assumption that most would define affordable as being a regular ongoing expense or cost of living. with a watch, although mass production pushed most watches into very reachable in quick and easy terms, watches can also represent a key moment in life and something worked towards, given as a gift. you could argue spending anything on a watch is a waste when there's likely a phone in your pocket - arguably a phone more expensive than most watches, too. if you're in the 'buy once, buy well' territory, or look for a greater level of pleasure from something with characteristics beyond it's most obvious function, there are far more expensive watches than these which are also going to provide a more personal and rewarding experience over a far far longer period.

@@VulgarRage who in their right mind buys a new $500-1000 smartphone every year? Given most watches are timeless (pun intended), there is the aspect of buying a decent one for a few hundred once, and having it run for a decade or longer. Also although most aren't going to hand down Seiko 5s, there is a much higher chance of giving a watch to a child or grandchild one day, than there is you giving them your old iPhone 3G in a few decades time.

Not everyone has the kind of disposable income to be able to drop $4,000 USD on a watch. They have families...kids mortgages, car payments, etc. Hey...you buy what you like and can afford. Personally I owned two Rolex's in my earlier years...but I was single and making decent money for the 1980's. Got rid of the Sub...hated it...and kept my Explorer 2 until 2005 when our townhouse was basically destroyed by Katrina...and it was ransacked afterwards. Now...I wear G Shocks, Bulovas and a few Crotons ( can't beat their lifetime warranty! I have yet to use it too!) I have a couple of Nixon 51-30's...which I love! With my 23 cm wrist ( basically 9 inches ) A 47 mm watch looks normal sized on my wrist. And actually, most of my wife's friends love my big watches.

"Tudor...Poor mans Rolex"? I never saw a poor man wearing a 3K watch on his wrist. I think we don't need to use the point of view of Watch snobs. Don't get me wrong. But 3K watches are not classifyed as "affordable" from any point of view. Even some of those who buy pretend to be just "penuts". I'm greatful to have a very high income. But I was never intent to waste money only to be "respected" by strange people who I don't care. A true watch lover is about to understand watches. Not only by pulling the credit card. I think affordable can be seen in a range of three figures. And there are a lot. The mentioned Tissot Gentleman is one of them. But Also Junghans can be found, Circula, Swatch, Orient, some Junkers, Zeppelin, Longines, Bruno Söhne etc. Thank you anyway fir your video.

Breitling and Omega , heck even Longines and Oris make great watches in the affordable watch category. One watch that is so over looked but really has a tremendous offering in the Swiss auto chrono category. The Cimier Seven Seas Sextant is a stunning watch. Some micro brands are really making a huge splash like Zelos, Edox even though the Edox isn't really a micro brand so much. Also no one should overlook offerings from Hamilton either. Never had an issue with any of them, and the chrono reset on the Seagull is possibly the smoothest I've ever experienced, which is really unexpected of a 200-buck watch. My suggestions would be: -Something by Longines - the Heritage Avigation BigEye, the Master Collection calendar/moonphase chrono, the Spirit... Bottom line, Longines is extremely popular and well respected. -Any sports/tool watch by Sinn. Well-finished, well-spec'd, rock solid and reliable. It's also niche to the point that if you see someone with a Sinn, there's a more than considerable chance you're dealing with a watch enthusiast. -Any Hamilton Khaki Field. Respected, recognizable, and it's the usual first choice of quintessential field watch.

a great video, thank you. You've given me a new watch to pine for, the Nomos. How lovely is that dial? I'm glad you led with the Seagull 1963, none of my other watches gets as many favourable comments as this one. When the light hits the dial just right this one lights up like a Chinese New Year, or perhaps a 1940's Xmas tinsel ornament? You captured a little of this at 2:20 minute point. Brings me a smile everytime I notice it. I have the 38mm with sapphire crystal, and I think it wears perfectly on my near 8 inch wrist. There are times when I prefer the smaller size, reminds me of watches from my Dad's era. there are two other watches I think worthy of your list. The first is another Glashütte watch, the Mühle-Glashütte SAR Rescue-Timer. A tool watch with serious grunt, and I can't think of any other watch where function so completely dictates form? With the rubber strap I think it has an almost minimalist elegance to it. the second watch I think worthy of your list would be the Casio Oceanus T200. A set once & forget JDM quartz, perfect for travelling through time zones and always keeping perfect time. Add in alleged(?) zaratsu polishing and it's hard not to like.

Love this channel, love Jenni, kinda hate the premise of this video. The idea of buying a watch with the aim of getting respect (validation) from so-called collectors (wealthy people) is gross. Anyway, thank you Jenni for the video nonetheless!

In fairness, I kina of think of it as a sort of "heads-up" educational video, that if you're just getting into watches, here's some to take a look at, lest you end up getting wasting your cash on an MVMT or similar.

Jenni ‘so you’re wearing the watch and not the other way around’ Elle. Legend. Solid list, esp the Tissot which doesn’t get nearly enough love.

Bauhaus may not be for everyone, and that's why we have Scheißhaus. And by Scheißhaus, I mean Invicta. OK, OK, I'm joking. Kinda.

Jenni can you tell me your opinion about seastar 1000 the chronograph with the blue dial on quartz movement? You think it worths its 500€ asking price?

the seagull is considered more of an "interesting" watch by collectors rather than a "respected" one. I would respect a simple plastic swatch with higher quality control for less money.

I live in the U.S. and i don’t have $4000 to spend on a watch. Unless you’re rich or don’t have any financial responsibilities that isn’t affordable at all. I’ll stick with Casio for affordable and Seiko for nice but still affordable. Just my 2 cents

I'm British and I live in Europe, and USD4k is a ridiculous amount of money to drop on a watch. In real life, no one apart from hardcore watch nerds spends that money on watches. To be fair, hardly anyone wears watches anymore.

Tudor Black bay Steel is great option if a person wants alternatives to normal blackbays. It has the date complications, the date window blends in well with the indices, the bezel click is amazing and still Tudor inhouse movt. Nomos Club Datum is a great option with a date
