Rolex makes almost everything in house because they bought the companies they originally outsourced to. They did not invent any wheels. They absorbed them. Seiko invented and made their own wheels without the need outsource and then buy them out…

That is so not true. The only movement that comes from another watchmaker was from Zenith. They used it in the Daytona. After that Daytona they did make their own movement for the Daytona. All the other movements are in house.

All Seiko need to do is change their name, relocate to Switzerland, and then charge $1,000 dollars for the same watch.

One of my favorite watches! Dressy Seiko 5s are always spectacular! I went with the SNX111 as it has this look but slightly longer hands

I was expecting the macro shots to be disappointing, but actually the finishing on this one way outstrips it's price tag. I'm impressed.

Amazing to see the Seiko 5 on here. I've had a few and currently have a grey dial (and a white older one without the "5"). I just wish less people would fall into the trap of thinking these are "entry" watches or consigned to "first automatic watches". They are much more than that. You simply can't find a better "dress" watch price to value/enjoyment in my opinion

I've had this for a few years, it still holds up to this day and is my everyday timepiece. Such a great watch, the finishing is excellent and the dial just oozes class. Hard to beat for the price, this was peak Seiko

The design is intemporel and time less. I got a similar priced watch that looked almost exactly like that (Citizen eco-drive), it's 13 years and still come back to it. :)

I own both this and a Rolex datejust 126300. I honestly get the same joy from both watches. I’ve come to learn that both watches have their own charm; one from the tremendous value and beauty ; the other for its brand image and better quality. But overall, they both offer similar joy. If you have to stretch your means to get a Rolex or have to baby it once you get it, I don’t think it’s worth it. You can get same joy for mere fraction of the price of a Rolex

Ahh timepieces. My favorite is a early 60s omega non automatic, speedmaster 125 a bit behind. Several swatches and my daily a 36 mm rolex perpetual . Seiko. Ya I have one of their calculator watches.

I bought this watch a few weeks back, as my first mechanical watch that I've ever owned and couldn't be happier with it. Watching the watch being featured on your channel reassures me what an awesome watch this is.

Hands down the best narrating and the most thought through episode so far. This video actually touches the very essence of time, how we love it displayed and those little marvels that does it for us.

I've had one of these Seiko 5s for about 4 years now. Pretty much the exact one shown here. With 0 watch budget I wanted a mechanical watch and found this. Been so happy with what I found, it is a really great watch to wear. But what is missed in this video is the quality of the dial. The way the light plays on the dial and how it changes in different lighting conditions is astonishing for a watch in this price category. I found myself staring at the dial in different lighting, something I've never done with any other watch or object I've owned. It is a highly underrated watch and represents true old fashioned value - getting far more than what you paid for.

Wow, I can’t believe my Seiko 5 watch is on Watchfinder. I’ve owned this model for over 15 years, and the movement keeps ongoing. It was purchased in a side alley watch shop in Hong Kong. The watch has traveled the world without a worry. It’s a watch that can be appreciated for its simplicity, no nonsense to time keeping.

@@johnfranklin5277 Seiko has been making this type of watch since ages ago..but under different model number/code. It's one of Seiko's evergreen watch Edit : the movement itself, 7s26 ,was first released in 1995

I’m over the moon to yet again see another Seiko on this channel. A Seiko 5 of all things. So amazing to see this beautiful watch close up and see how incredible this mass produced automatic watch compares with the mega watches of the world.

@@grahamcarr17 Understood, but it's difficult not to pivot with Rolex because often times, for me personally, many people mistake my Sea Urchin for a Rolex Submariner, and this watch for a Datejust.

I’ve had one of these for about 2 years and originally got it as a bit of a beater… I honestly wear it more often than my Tudor or Omega, very underrated piece. Standard bracelet is a bit tinny but looks good on the wrist at least!

One year later, and it's now $250

The most amazing thing about Rolex is that people get in line to pay double retail for them when retail was already well in excess of all reason.

In all the years that i've been into watches, i've come to the conclusion that a simple day/date and time is all i use on a every day basis. As for a chronograph, you can't beat a digital. (This is a great little watch at a great price)

I have purchased 1 because of the reviews. It's just a little small for me and personally think it would suit a lady better. It's a lovely looking watch, but please remember you're looking at the details of this watch through a close up camera, it doesn't look as good in the flesh just because of its small size.

@@mrz80 The Duro/ Marlin is a fantastic watch;200 m WR, more accurate than any mechanical/automatic, great looking ,unidirectional rotating bezel & only have to change a battery every few years for cheap! What’s not to like?! For ~ $50!!!

I am just here to say this video is so freaking beautiful the zoom on the watch is incredible. I think Seiko should really hire this guy to make their advertising videos. This show case really made me want this watch.

After years of watch collecting I turned fifty years old and so did the Seiko5. So I figured it would be a nice addition to my small collection of mechanical watches. Six Seiko5 models later I am now a huge Seiko fan. Fantastic company with a long history and excellent products.

Yes indeed After 20yrs of this hobby Seiko is now giving me the most fun and enjoyment!

I love the closeups of even the "warts" on the movement. This was one of my first automatic watches, that got me into things. Still fond memories though long gone.

It's wrong to think of Seiko as a cheap watch. They are pure quality and last for decades.

When you give it the full Watchfinder video treatment, it looks every bit as good as anything from the Swiss brands. Super review.

I have the Seiko 5 SNK789. I inherited it from my late father, who also liked watches. It has the same 7S26 movement as that SNXS79, and it's been great. Even though I have a smart watch and some other fancy solar-powered Citizen quartz watches, I still find myself drawn to the simplicity yet practicality of an automatic watch like this. I might have to get that SNXS79 sometime!

Your smooth video and spoken style make this Seiko look just as good as the multi-thousand dollar watches you often feature. Well done!

Another Superlative review. It's a joy just to listen and watch these videos. So much reserved, tempered, enthusiasm. Whether its a 1M$+ piece, or a 100$ one. I can't help to just sit, and enjoy your genuine appreciation of each piece you show us. :)

I love my Seiko 5. The quality of the steel bracelets are relatively poor but that's perfectly fine with me, they put the majority of the value into the watch itself. The first thing I did was to remove the bracelet and replace it with a nice Hirsch leather strap to create a very classy looking watch.

Wooh Seiko 5 on Watchfinder. Great choice with the SNSX79. I had a choice of this and the SRPE51 and went for the latter with its upgraded movement. The previous gen 5s had a solid innings and I’m willing to bet that the current DressKXs will fill those shoes as the years pass.

The first self winding watch I got was an old 1968 Seiko Chronograph stopwatch which my dad passed on to me. It still functions very well although is not as accurate as some of the newer Seiko automatics which I have. The purpose of a typical Seiko watch is just to tell the time with the date and occasionally the day as well. I bought my first automatic watch, an early Seiko 5 during the early 90s. Since then I have gotten a few more Seiko mechanical watches, one as a gift from my spouse during our anniversary. The best part of using a mechanical watch is that you'll never worry about the battery running out. Something which I value more than anything else. Just wear it and it works.

@@LaTacheGrandCru I got a full service on the chronograph shortly after my dad passed the watch to me during the mid 80s. Since then I sent the watch in for minor checks on the accuracy with a lubricant service twice until to date. I take it out to wear on special dates and it keeps time fine.

I've been wearing this for 3-4 years now. Its super robust, light, easy to forget about it on the hand. Its also waterproof, i never take it off when i go into water with it and never had a problem. I paid around 80$ for it.

I’m wearing this watch right now. I enjoy watching time elapse as the hands move. I find mine keeps up well with accuracy. Never too far off but not even close to accuracy as compared to my multi band 6 G-shock but what can you do with a movement that doesn’t allow for hacking. My only complaint is that I wish the second hand needle was a little thicker. Sometimes it seems to disappear depending on the day or how the sunlight catches it .

I love Seiko watches and they are great value. I own a vintage Rolex that was handed down to me and it is lovely, but neither the vintage or modern versions of Rolex attract me that much. I have learnt over time that you should own or wear the watch that you like not the one that someone else hypes up or attaches undue importance to. Some nice brands now far exceed even Seiko on quality and value for money. We should be individual and true to ourselves. Thanks for the video.

I have several 5s/7S26... and they are truly amazing. And with just a tad fine tuning they can be far more accurate than delivered. Currently setting another up and after two days it's less than three seconds out. Seiko 5... for the guy who doesn't need a surrogate peener on his wrist. Be well, and thanks.

My first watch ever was a Seiko SRPA27 - Hackable, Hand-winding, I put on a nato strap and wearing it right now and absolutely love it. It's incredibly accurate.

I own a SNXS79J. It was my first automatic and still love it to this day

covid hit me hard. during the time i became super broke and had to sell all my watches from rolex datejust to breitling colt and this was literally the only watch i could afford to keep. i wore this everyday and thought nothing of it. last year i got my dream job making over 250k a year again down from 40k or less last few years. ive been able to add a few nice watches back and recently my best tudor black bay which ive wanted for a long time. now watching this video i miss this watch so much. it broke inthe last fewe months of my old job and i threw it out. i had so many memories with that watch. i cant even remember why it broke but i would pay $1000 to get it back right now. now watching this video of the exact watch brings back so many memories. a masterpeice of a watch for the price and even though i was broke as fuck it got so many compliments

The Seiko SNXS79K was my first automatic watch and I still wear it every day at work. The sunburst dial is beautiful and the watch itself looks much more expensive as it is. Even the bracelet looks very good, but unfortunately doesn't feel premium. But that's not suprising considering the price. I got it on a leather strap and it looks even more beautiful for my taste. All in all I think it's one of the best automatic watches at this pricepoint and a good choice to enter the world of automatic watches.

It's impressive how true the balance staff is, not relative to the price but in absolute terms. I'm accustomed to seeing four and five figure movements where you can see it dancing around the jewel as the wheel oscillates.

Yep I noticed that too, it is quite impressive. What about the beat rate? Perhaps 21,600 low beat rates does not shows the wiggles as clear as the 28,800 typical swiss ones?

Ive owned this watch for about 5 years, as my only mechanical watch I absolutely love it!

I bought one of these many years ago, and swapped in a higher quality Oyster link bracelet. When I first wore it to the office, my very style conscious boss walked by my desk - and then stopped and did a double take. My guess is they thought I was wearing a Rolex and a call to HR was in order to double check my salary.

Bought my first Seiko watch late last year (Seiko 5 GMT Blueberry) and I'm taken aback at what a diamond of a bargain these watches are, it feels so classy to wear, a few people have asked me what is that watch on your wrist there. Certainly in the next year there'll be a couple more Seiko's added to my collection.

Hats off to Seiko I've grown out of seiko but that first seiko 5 truly is special

I have one of these as well as the more recent 'suzuki' version. The Seiko 5 has to be one of the greatest watch brands of all time. Not the best, but the greatest. If Alec Issigonis had made watches instead of cars he may well have come up with something like this. If the Seiko 5 had been a car it would be the Austin Mini, the Fiat 500, the Citron 2v, or, maybe the VW Beetle. Some people say you cannot be a motorhead until you've owned an Alpha Romeo. I say you cannot be a watch geek until you've owned a Seiko 5.

This watch deserves the Watchfinder treatment. Looks beautiful!

I bought an SKXS73 (silver sunburst dial) 5 years ago for 82 euro's. They're now being sold for 120 euro's minimum because of the big demand by the people who know the good value they get from that watch. I replaced the bracelet to a 19mm jubilee bracelet a couple of months ago and some people mistook it for a Rolex Oyster perpetual

7:51 now I don't know about the accuracy of Rolex but I bought one of these Seikos in late November and I've been wearing it daily. Today, roughly three months later it has gained 50 seconds. I have never seen this sort of accuracy from a mechanical watch. Other mechanical watches I had usually gain 1 min per week.

50s in 3 months is very good for any mechanical. I believe seiko quotes -25s to +45s a day to be within spec. Rolex guarantees -2 to +2 a day and they often sub 1s a day. You got a good one! 1-2s per day is very good for a mechanical at any price.

I own this exact watch, it loses about 90 seconds over about 11 12 days. I totally satisfied with that. Yours if accurate, is exceptional!

What colour is the dial for the watch in the video

First automatic watch I bought had quickset date, stop second function, and manual wind capability. Maybe I'm spoiled, but don't think I would go without those. Nice vid, though, thanks.

The $100 watch that looks a million bucks - a cracking watch - well made, nicely finished and reliable - if you can live with the tiny crown which you’ll be using a lot because the power reserve is only around 38 hours - I owned one and loved it for a while - it’s a nice watch in its own right - never mind Rolex

7S26 has no hand winding, so the small crown doesn't matter, 4R35 and up are hand windable and generally have larger crowns

Darryl Bryant, could be that with the limited power reserve and if one is like myself and does not move often enough, the Seiko will run down and cease operating. Then the crown comes into use...to reset the time 😁

With the accuracy specs on this one, you will be probably using it quite a lot anyway. I have a couple of Seiko 5s that run dead accurate. But I also have them to a different tune. Fun thing is though with these it doesn't matter that much.

There's something sublime about the caliber 7S26. It's basically what you get when you take an automatic day-date movement to its most basic form. No frills, no fuss.

Lovely watch, but there doesn’t seem to be any of these available in the UK. All out of stock and Google tells me it’s discontinued, but your video was only one month ago. Can you help? Thank you in advance.

I never heard anybody else talking about watches with such enthusiasm.

ive got a seiko 5 sports diver, and honestly its my favourite watch ever. The bracelet is nice and sturdy solid steel but i mostly wear it on a black leather strap. I drive it daily and have done so for over a year. Still brings me joy everytime i look at my wrist and its actually quite the conversation starter aswell. Though mine was closer to 400 the quality and finishing of it are still leagues ahead of its price. This video was a great piece of advise even for the watch ernthousiast with deeper pockets. Every collection needs a seiko, they're underrated.

i absolutely love my SNXS73! my favorite watch by far. granted i don’t own a rolex day/date, but seriously for the price i honestly rather keep buying the seiko 5. mine honestly runs between -1 sec/day to +3 sec/day. i’m not kidding or exaggerating. maybe i got lucky. i even wear it while playing ice hockey. no problems whatsoever. i’ve switched up leather straps several times but have settled on a solid jubilee milled clasp. only issue is it’s 19mm lugs, but now that i love the jubilee, will keep it as is and not need to hunt for another strap. watchgecko sells 19mm leather straps, so easy to find one you like. thanks for the unbiased video on a very loved watch.

I purchased a Citizen solar watch for about $100 in 1996-97, and it has stayed on time for the past 25 years. It stays charged with just daylight but I give it sunlight meals every week or so.

I loved that this channel highlighted a watch that everyone can afford. Not everyone here is fancy.

What a salesman you are!! After watching this, I went shopping and bought a brand new one of these. Should arrive in 4 days. Looks like a handsome watch. Looking forward to it. Thanks.

The SNKL23 and the SNK809 are a great pair of gateway pieces. Even though they've been discontinued, they can still be had for a decent price. They're also fairly easy to modify with a 4R-36 movement, if one should choose to do so.

@@unwokeneuropean3590 As far as I know, the 7S-26 was phased out in 2019, but they made so may of those, there were stockpiles of them. The older 5 models were still being made just to use up those movements. My SNKL23J and SNK809 both have mid 2021 build dates on them.

I would love to buy this watch and put a 4R movement in it. Do you know if there are any tricks? I’m guessing you would need a bigger crown, so you could actually manually wind it.

@@jonathandoughy3430 The 4R-36 is getting harder to find these days, but the NH-36 is the exact same movement, but un-branded, and still made by Seiko. Putting one in the smaller case requires you to re-use the movement ring from the 7S-26 so it fits in there properly. You'll also need the proper stem, as the original will not work in the 4R. You can get both the movement and stems from Crystal Times. As long as you have the tools and have done this sort of work before, it should be fairly easy. One thing to remember, is to swap the movement ring, you will need to remove the day / date wheels. If the wrong ring is used, the case will not close. Also when purchasing the new movement, make sure to get the one with the proper crown location, the 4 o'clock crown, I'm assuming. There are a load of modding videos on KZread, but most deal with the SKX. Watch some of those to make sure you're ready to do the work.

@@valengreymoon5623 Thank you very much for the detailed instructions. I’ve not done a 7S to 4R swap before, but I’ve done some dial and hand mods on both the 7S and 4R movements. Time for the next step :) I literally just ordered the SNXS79 watch about 30 minutes ago. Can’t wait to get it!

Was REALLY surprised that alot people didnt know the existence of this one. I tried not to talk about it alot, not because i wanted to gatekeep but we all know the toxic resellers who buys these in bulk and pumps up the prices to ridiculous amount knowing they dont make them anymore. They sucked up the enjoyment from everyone else. It was already hard for me to look for one and even then the prices was way above what these go for. But, ive owned mine with the silver dial for awhile now so i dont really mind. If youre a seiko fan looking for a 5, and if youre a fan of a classic perpetual datejust with a very limited budget, grab this one, you wont regret it

Where do you find this watch in Canada?

I got one of these (gold with champagne dial) to take on holiday as a beater watch in 2016 and it is still going strong. Swapped out the crap bracelet for an aftermarket oyster (19mm end links were a nightmare) and you have a genuinely great all round watch for £250ish all in. I’ve also worn this in the ocean and swimming pools for 6+ years now and no issues whatsoever, despite only being 30m water res! This supposed throwaway buy made me sell my Tag (this was 2018, we all make mistakes) and purchase another Seiko, an Alpinist which I eventually sold, yet this stays in the collection.

Three top moments: (1) "markers printed on the dial like a barbarian"; (2) lume shot, with the dial rotating towards the UV lamp; and (3) Tesla manufactures wheelbarrows (like Porsche used to manufacture tractors). Arguably, 37mm (or thereabouts) is the new perfect size for everyone except Stallone and LeBron. This Seiko 5 adds to the debate that the Explorer, Patek 7234 and the new Longines Legend Diver are WINNING. Finally, let's stop calling Seiko an underdog. Taking the most conservative view point, Seiko has been killing' it since at least 1968. A perfect day-date watch for thousands? Well done. But Seiko can make it, sell it for $100 and still turn a profit. Out on the street, they call it MURDER!

I’ve had this exact watch for about 5 years and amongst all my Swiss watches I wear this almost daily. Absolute stunner of a watch! Only thing is it’s hard to find a decent 19mm bracelet for this.

Have a look on Tokielab or Lucius Atelier - get yourself a whole new case and a new oyster bracelet and you'll have your watch looking like a million quid to a billion quid!

I have this watch! The bracelet is a little flimsy and it a little on the light side but I absolutely love it! It definitely look way more expensive than it actually is!

Seiko 5s have been around for years - I have several (amongst other more 'renown' timepieces). The movement is tried and tested - and it works. Great watches that come in a style to suit all. Just because one has a 'limited' number manufactured, and one doesn't - doesn't make the Seiko 5 any worse. Less 'special' maybe - but not any worse.

Every single watches' discussion on how good a watch is will eventually get involve with Rolex as a counterpart. The more Rolex pops up, the more ridiculous its hype will ever be. Can we just ignore Rolex and enjoy a watch as it is?

I’ve been looking for a cheap but reliable automatic watch and the first place I looked at was the Seiko 5 range. Then I discovered a watch maker called ‘Pagani Design’ who have a similar watch to this but blows the Seiko 5 out of the water for specs. It has the Seiko NH35 movement which is superior the one found in the ‘5’, claimed 200m water resistance, screw down crown & case back, appx +/- 3 secs per day, bi directional winding, date complication, 40 hr power reserve and is only £89. Wow. I’m just about to order one as a daily in the grey dial.

Agree but pagani design's lume is inferior obviously to reduce the cost but their watches are really competitive when it comes to specs, movement, crystal and solid bracelets

@@hitsugayat10 - Agreed - Lume is crap as is the bracelet - but the specs of the watch are amazing for the price so swapping out the bracelet for a strap makes it look more expensive then it actually is. For £89 I’m not going to grumble

@@Tom_Kowalczuk - No it’s not a Seiko Homage - it is a R**** homage - but the Seiko kinda looks like a homage too - PD1690 v2 - I actually nearly didn’t buy one as it is a homage - but the specs were too good to ignore for the price

I totally agree, except for the price. living in the United States, I can easily find this model for 70-80 dollars on sales for 50! a couple of years ago at a very peripheral Walmart I even saw a $30 Seiko 5 on sale. I still regret that I didn’t buy it just so that I could have a price proof

What's the dial color on the watch?

Quite well executed watch! When I sometimes compare products of some so called "low end" but old traditional and historical Swiss brands, frequently independent but still operating at today very difficult holorogical market with those, which plunged into gin traps of great luxury moguls - I cannot sweep aside the impression that 70% of worth is marketal hype with no technological background. How much must I pay for trendy, "highly" ranked, backed by hundreds thousand dollars campaign ticker so that to buy e.g. Nivarox class main- and hairsprings, Incabloc ati-shock system and Glucydur balance wheel? Or a watch with movement, which is naturally adjusted to 5 positions in standard production process? COSC accuracy? How much must I pay for additional "genuine" strap, clasp etc etc. When I take the magnifying glass I start to wonder for what the customer is intended by marketers to pay for - lacquer, glitter, markings? - or for sound execution and proven, reliable traditional or new technology? The wristwatch per se, was invented to be the honest sidekick time teller .... .

I added a Seiko SNKL55K1 to my watch-collection recently, because I really felt that something like that was missing. It needed a bit of derolexification and now, on a fauxstrich-strap, I enjoy it a lot. Thanks for Your portrait of a cheaper watch. Like a few other collectors of Russian watches I will put a few pieces from my collection up on ebay to raise money for Ukraine relief.
