Great advice, and not just for beginners. Even experienced watch collectors need to be reminded from time to time. Impulsively buying watches can be an uphill struggle on a snowy hill.
ouuuu we all make rookie mistakes and I loved hearing some of yours, you gorgeous German goddess! My rookie mistake was treating watch collecting like a sprint and not a marathon. I just got so hooked, so quickly! And I just wanted to buy soooo many watches all at once! *face palm*. I am just an enthusiastic person!! hahah. I'm so glad you're back Jenni!

Hi Jenni, great Vlog as always, with good advice for beginners as well as some reminders to the more seasoned collectors amongst us. Another point to consider is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). With increased awareness of watches in the wider community both as status symbols and potential investments (your point #6) some people are sighing into watch buying for fear they are losing out on “easy money”. A friend of mine has fallen into some of the traps you correctly identify, and FOMO was one of my friend’s drivers for getting into watches. Look forward to your next vlog 🙏
Another lovely and informative video. Thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. 😊
Great video and advice as always. Thank you, beautiful. So happy you are back! ❤️
Great Video Jenni! Thank you for the tips!
Great job. In the 90’s I learned about eBay from an article in a Tech mag - the author was buying watches and covered many of these topics: scams, overbidding, buyer’s remorse, addiction. One needs to be very careful.
Excellent advice! Great call on the customs situation. It’s easy to forget to declare watches before you leave your home country, too, so they know you’re not trying to fool them on the way back in.
Finding the right seller is such a good advise. When I was selling one of my seiko’s, it was at least a year and a couple of month that I had to deal with BS offers till I found a buyer that truly appreciated it and sold it at a more that reasonable price
Yay! Jenni’s back! Nomos is a hard watch to resist! I love the Ludwig and because of my small wrists, I bought the 33 and later purchased a horween shell-cordovan remborde strap with the winged clasp. Love that watch! It keeps perfect time and that beautiful alpha caliber is really a sight to behold. Winding it every morning isn’t a chore, either. I actually look forward to it.

Great advice all around. Sometimes I think I should just sell off my collection to get that one "grail". The reason is that most of my collection is a result of settling for what's instantly available versus what I really want. In fact, I've been considering getting the Grand Seiko GMT Spring Drive chrono (the blue version) in place of my current collection. Keeping my Rolex Yachtmaster, and Omega SMP 300m, though. Everything else will have to go.

Some youtubers watch video reviews are produced so well that I find myself running to the AD to see the actual watch in person, and that's where my dilemma begins. Lol
Yea. I too bought 2 watches at the same time because I couldn't choose between the two. I still have them and love them, as you do.
My first watch is Tissot PRX 35mm silver dial and it’s awesome.😀
Good vid, thank you.
I don't completely agree with the Private Seller vs Dealers. Yes, that may be true that if you're completely new to watches the second might be safer, however I found the "pro" grey market dealers very often try to make the watch look brand new by refinishing the watch and "professionally" servicing it. That many times leads to lesser quality finish than factory finish, overpolished rounded edges, dust under the crystal, marks on the hands etc. (yes, I have experience with that). If you don't care about that stuff and only want something shiny with ROLEX on the dial that's fine, but I personally would not have a watch refinished by anyone other than the manufacturer and I rather have a watch with slight scuffs from a private seller than a "cleaned up" one from one of the professional dealers. I would only get one from them if it's brand new and unworn.
Have you ever tried the Glycine Airman 36mm cream dial? It’s great for small wrist
Nice background! Beautiful grand piano!!!
Thank you very mutch for all this viedio
Good advice Jenni. I would add buying too many watches too fast when you first start out. If you have a 12 slot watch box, it doesn't mean it is a race to fill it. It is a mistake I have made personally.

Along with my Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Seiko Grand, I have now added two German classics to my collection. A Damasko DS36 and a Sinn 556i. I would recommend one of these two to any first time buyer.
Thanks alot.
Hmm, I made your mistake number 1. I bought my Tag Heuer Link Chronograph (the Jason Bourne one) from EBay. 3 years old at half the price of new. Alarm bells right? So I actually drove 14 to Germany and back (wow, interesting trying to speak German again after a couple of years as the seller only spoke German). But they (a couple) were real watch freaks and the watch was immaculate! Everything was there, and I was lucky because it was the holiday time. And indeed, my watchmaker was very impressed with how good it was. But yes, I was really lucky. I do still have it (bought it in 2006) and still love it…
Thank you for your advice I have 2 Citizen eco drive watches and am thinking of getting an Omega GMT watch from an AD but not sure which one I like the look of the aqua terra range but do not think they do one in that range. Can you suggest an automatic watch of about that style and price that I should be looking at. Thank in advance for your help with this
Great advice. What do you think of ebay's authenticity guarantee scheme? I hear that you have to send the watch to a valuer who will check the watch and send it direct to the buyer if they win the auction.
Thank you!!!
Nice editing, delivery.

Good points. I'n my oppinion private offers are totally overrated. I feel like 95% of the watsches are trash or unworth related to their (wet dream) prices of the ownet. I get their thoughts: "I buy an expensive watch, but hey...after wearing and flexing I will sell for allmost same price." There so many rocked down watches, full of scratches and flaws but thf prices are only 10% or never more than 20% less than originals. Comon...before buying and risiking a damaged movement, I pay the full price. The average 20% off which is mentioned is only if the watch is as good as new condition. But the most didn't understood. That's why many ads are staying for months till they are deleted without selling.

Great Advice, don't spend money you don't have and #6. So many folks on a watch forum I frequent worry so much about the watch holding value and look that's great if it does or if it appreciates. However do not make that the reason you're buying the piece in the first place over another piece you like that may not hold value as well. If you're doing that you're in this hobby for all the wrong reasons.
Buying from an AD, paying retail instead of overpaying on secondary market will help pace you and prevent many of these mistakes. Just became interested in Rolex but am willing to be patient and work with AD. Got my first Rolex within 6 months, next one may take a year or more but am willing to pace my self and save money by not over paying gray market prices. I've looked at Breitling and Omega but am willing to wait a bit before settling. We each have to deal with our desires.
I disagree with no 5.. just evade it 🤣 no one is going to check.. maybe not in germany, but definitely works in most places haha
Very nice vidéo
Kind of a silly question I'm sure, but I was wondering when you are looking at a watch what makes you know that it is a watch for you? What kind of emotions are you feeling and how do you understand that it is a good watch for you.

Hello. I had a question. This is a situation I find myself in. What about if you see a watch on a watch-selling website. You and the seller then agree to meet with the intention of buying providing everything checks out with the watch, instead of purchasing through the website? The owner is going to have to pay a fee for selling on the site. Makes the watch more expensive for me. If he doesn’t sell through the watch-selling website he can lower the price. I’m happy to have a reduction in price. But selling privately you loose any protection. What would you do? Buy the watch privately? I have asked to purchase the watch at a particular price. To do so he could sell outside of the website and accommodate me. For him it’s not issue. Just not sure what’s right.
Do people think cheap sub £200 automatic watches are worth servicing or better to replace when they start playing up?
If you get fired up about a watch, sleep on it for a month to see if you're still truly interested.

100% about being cautious early on about buying from private sellers; better to spend a bit more and risk less until you know what you're looking at / buying. So, regarding selling your watch/waiting for a price: This entirely depends on what you value your opportunity cost of time -- selling for less but spending less time may be a net win.🤷♀ Unrelated: Your nose freckles are the cuuuutest!!!!

I bought my first "real" watch in the 60s, a Gruen Precision. I was so proud to show it off. I put it in front of my dad's face as he was reading the newspaper, tapped the crystal and said, "Gruen Precision" with a bit of smugness. My dad tapped the crystal of his watch and said, "Timex, approximate."
I was just watching teddy baldassarre's video about his regrets about his collection
When did you get the tattoo??? Can you do the same for vintage watches 🤔🤔
What was the watch 7:46?
Even with the ebay authentication service it still doesn't give me enough confidence to buy... Jenni... Perhaps a topic for a video?
Service should be a big consideration too - some watches cost $1000 +/- for time to time reconditioning, where is the nearest authorized service, etc.
One thing I would also mention. Today we have like 18 year olds that never wore a watch. Before buying an “expensive” piece it is may a good advice to get used to wearing a watch at all. This can be done with a cheap and simple watch (I onced lended one of my Swatch to a co-worker). She found it very annoying the first days but then got used to it. Now she wear a nice Tag-Heuer every day.

I sold my pre-owned Tudor via a Chrono24 buyer who came to my place of work. He brought full ID, inspected the watch and made payment. The guy knows where I work so he knew the watch was quality. I turned down many buyers who wanted me to post it. Some willing to pay more.
Do you have tips on buying a watch as a gift? I think it’s different from buying one for yourself because it’s more personal. When it comes to buying one as a gift, I’m usually stumped where to begin, especially since it might require a significant amount.

Wrist size and preferences. I have made the mistake of buying watches on bracelets for people who only like straps, and vice versa. Casually find out what they like and buy it for them. Dial colors, complications, etc.
When I plan on buying a watch I research it first on price and true value meaning what it sells for and what the gray market is asking. I then look around to reputable AD's and see what they have. I sleep on it the following night before I buy it. I always say to myself " Just because its a good deal doesn't mean its a good deal for me at the time of purchase." Always take your time because you have to live with the decision after your new purchase. You dont have to compete with everyone else but just be happy with your purchase and plan on keeping it for a really long time and don't flip it... you will lose a large portion of what you initially paid for it.
