47772's first start in quite a few years `

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

47772 started for the first time in some time. this engine has EP start contactors which is why it stop motoring over after a couple of turns as the air had got too low. it was a bit sluggish to start with but it soon clears and settles down nicely with oil pressure of 60 PSI. still plenty more work to be done on this one before it graces the main line again. But it should not be too long away

    Wasn't this loco left to rot along with many others at Margam TMD. It's great to see that it has been saved. Many others from Margam were sadly scrapped, no thanks to EWS/DB Schenker. All credit to those involved in the restoration, and many thanks for sharing.

    the internals of these engines were like works of art, the conrods, big ends and crankshaft were machined and polished steel none of your rough castings painted red on these babies. I remember there was a problem with a wrong type of cylnder head valve being fitted which could break and allow the valve to drop, smash the piston and other two cylinders on the same exhaust manifold and also take out the turbo. Very expensive

    I remember seeing one of these in Doncaster works around 1963, newly delivered and ready to enter service. Because I began my spotting in 1958 and loved steam I was never a fan of diesels and deplored the deltics, but I have to admit that the Brush diesels (this was before they became 47s if I recall correctly) looked rather handsome in their original British Railways livery.

    The Class 47 is a fantastic all rounder of a loco, happy on both freight & passenger duties. The Sulzer engine is superbly engineered and very quiet even under load. But they tended to produce too much smoke when pulling away even when hot which showed the age of the design. Still miss the Waterloo to Exeter trains they used to haul; the lovely old carriages with wood trim and comfy seats etc. It made a day out from Basingstoke to Exeter complete going on those old trains instead of the more modern class 159s (although I quite like these too now since they date back to BR days).

  • @Kromaatikse

    @Kromaatikse

    3 жыл бұрын

    It starts with priming the fuel system, clearing it of air and bringing the pressure up in the injector rails; that's the job of the high-pitched motor often heard just before starting. Then either a dedicated starter motor is energised (in alternator-fitted locos such as refurbished 37s) or the main generator is connected as a motor, to turn the engine over. Once it's running under its own power, the governor will automatically maintain idle RPM, and it's just a case of waiting for it to warm up to operating temperature.

    This is known as BR Parcels Sector livery. Hauling Royal Mail trains would have been only a small part of its intended duties, though the principal red colour was intended to go well with Post Office red rolling stock. BR ran its own parcels services known as Red Star, as well as trains dedicated to newspaper distribution.
