37516 first start in 4 years
377516 starts for the first time in 4 years. It had only arrived at our site 18 hour previously. It starts well and the exhaust soon clears. within the hour we also had it taking power and moving around the yard.

Great to see another TRACTOR come to life - great vid
I love the sound the starter makes, you can really hear it working as hard as it can to get this beast fired up again.

dunno if you guys gives a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the new movies on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend these days :)

makes my heart sing to see the old girl come back to life, well done and keep up the good work.
One summer evening about 10 years ago I was at Basingstoke station. 37516 arrived at plat4 with a short tanker train. At the same time a freightliner was enroute across the junction hauled by a class47. As it reached the end of platform 1 the 47 failed, leaving its train blocking the entire SWT mainline and the down reading line. 37516 came off the tanks, shunted from the up to the down Reading road and pushed the entire freightliner clear of the Jk. What a noise....can still hear it now!
After a bit of a grotty start (though after 4 years - perfectly acceptable!) - great to see another class 37 Tractor sound as it should - perfectly healthy and beating the wheelbarrow in the video hands down :) Never heard the starter have to work the engine so hard before - when I was a kid, they were either just kept running between loads, or they started almost instantly (lived near a coal line!)
British engineering at its best: four years and still starts!

British smoke engineering at its best, German locos of this era didnt smoke like this its appalling pollution

All the British diesels smoke blue, even when warmed up! They always burn more oil then fuel when running. And you think that's a good engineering?
Seemed kinda reluctant to fire up but it started screaming and torquing up, suddenly remembering what it's purpose was!! Wonderful!
GREAT to see !! good work !!

Turn me off because you cannot be bothered as you have a shiny new toy to play with and ignore me for 4 years in a cold and wet siding. Just a few hours of attention and she is back, what a salute to the superb quality of workmanship all those years ago. Well done lads, keep up the good work!
Glorious. Love it.
Came back to life well runs clean and sounds good. Restore It :-)
amazing! hope to see this WCRC beast soon.
That's a beautiful thing!
OK!...ALL ABOARD! What....Alittle bit of WD/40 and a couple cans of spray paint and she's good as new. Ready for that cross-country. :) Thanks for the cool video 16!
I wish I could wake up the neighbors with that sound every morning....lol
Lovely to hear an ailing '37 turn into a healthy loco in the matter of seconds and even beat the wheel barrow it the race at the end :)
...and that is why I love 37's :D
Much better than Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at its best times!
I make a similar noise on a Monday morning but I don't give out so much smoke!
you guys put the Loco in Motive. Thumbs up !
Oh how lovely, the age of steam returns lol, great film ,i love the comment from mrspivvy, i hope you have many hours of fun with with beauty, well done.
They certainly are not oily smelly pieces of crap. They were built over 40 years ago and are still in service. That goes to show you the quality of workmanship that went into building them. After standing in a siding for 4 years, these guys have it running within an hour. Could you see a class 66 doing that in 40 years time?
Another fine job....smoke clears mostly right up after the turbos spool up. Please assure me you run an oil pre-lube pump for a few hours before resurrecting these old girls.
That old girl is purring..................even after 4 years
at the start it sounds dead (or dying) but i'm glad it's not been scrapped!

Awesome work chaps!
the reason that the startup sounds funny with that wining sound is because it has 2 starter moters. nice chuggy idle
Nice one, another loco for Gordy to get back on track. They say he did a sand dance at start of film but it has been cut.
COME ON SULZER! YOU CAN DO IT!!
Nice work chaps! Fairly clean considering. Good Craig bellow at 0:43 :)
Because, if you listen, one or two cylinders part fired (hence the smoke), which helped the batteries enough to spin the engine fast enough for all the rest to fire - you can hear the increase in starter speed just before it kicks in properly.
Once it's engine started it sounds lovely first sound a bit scary but hey it's old and nackered!!
wow. impressive. They almost got it started on the 1st go. You could hear the starter motor go off for a few secs to the end of the 1st start.
Fantastic. English Electric Quality - built to last.
My lordz that thing produces more clag than in a steam engine!!!
Nice One !!
ACE mate just ACE
I have a 37419 in my yard and the only time we use it is to pull off old train axels when we stripping them down loads of fun so much power in my train lol.
Sounds scarry but cool though
Good to see at least some of Britain's rail history, even the diesels, escaped the scrapyard. You can't save 'em all, but is seems too many of them got cut up for scrap, etal
There is something weird about hearing a starter motored 37 turning over, almost like the sound of zontars car starting dubbed over it,lol, nice work lads
my sides are hurting thankyou.
Very cool
That poor thing needs one helluva paint job!
excellent!
sounds like my washer and dryer
Nice climax after all that foreplay.
how cool is that
i would LOVE to see that starter
Nice video, but pity the sound isn't so great. Would be nice to hear it properly. Well done on getting it going so quick!
Awesome! *****
whats the maximum revs of alocomotive diesel? cant be anymore than 1000rpm
oh sorry, i thought 37's had Sulzers, never mind. Thanx for the info!
@GWR4079 oh my god that would be the coolest engine ever!!! The piston would be so big it would max out at probably 50 rpm lol
@CellarStoners Then why did it start?
I quite agree!
God I LOVE trains! watching this gives me a woody! Its awesome when she fires up and keeps running!
Nice....
Ah, great answer.
Doesn't sound like a Napier ! The ones used in mine sweepers were cartridge start . I believe they only turned the engine 1/16th of a rotation and after a couple of loud bangs they came to life !!
I didn't know until I came on here, but the generator is driven by the batteries which then turns the engine over. kind of like a dynastart but much bigger
i wonder whats the cranking amps for that thing
the starter sounds like my sister when she was 1
You can now find her on a Wareham service on a Swanage Railway near you.
Really need a good fully charged battery for that start
for comedic value you should have had a mondeo parked next to it with jump leads going into the 37
This has a Mirless dont it? I know most of them had a English electric
So what are you guys gonna do with it or what did you do with it
yeah sulzers r great if u like falling asleep all the time
is the wining sound the turbo working?
July 2022 and this is currently parked at York station
How many joules required for cold cranking?
Amazing. What kind of starter motor do these have?
No Chris, I think it soundfs really good considering it had not been started for over 4 years... By the way, have you been to the National Railway museum in Adelaide? it's worth a visit, as they have several English Electric locos there which are in the same family as this.
Surprised this thing sounds like electric start - no compressed air?
6.00 AM i can t wake up!!¨HEIM, HEIM HEIM... hahahahahhahhhahhaa .
Idk why but the engine of this train reminds me of the trains from GTA SA
How does this thing start? Battery power, air, or auxiliary engine?
how many volts does it take too start a beast like that?
@volvomantom LOL. I have many times, I've had scans and samples taken but the doctors are baffled :-)
It looks the way that it sounds - prehistoric, but not a bad start after 4 years of dormancy.
Is this the notorious Carbon Footprint?
Here it is 5 years earlier
sounds like my zastava MEGA
Aaaaaaaaah is sow funning 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It brought air traffic to a halt all over western europe for a week!
Reminds me of a War Film with Gregory Peck and his Cronies as drunken Sailors who had sabotaged aGerman CruiseLiner and were desperately trying to start up the engine of their escape boat prior to the Ship being blown up ! Anybody remember the name of the Film ??
looks like a cousin of ww2 bombers, really sleek!
My Opel Astra sounded the same.
WOW
MY GOD Its like jesus WHEN YOU STARTED THAT UP IT WAS FUCKING HAPPY AS HELL!! Did You FUCKING Hear the sing Fiigaro??!?!?! 0:07
OK.AKKU!!!
Did you shoot this with a pinhole camera?
how old is this thing
it sounds like the engine is saying NO. NO NO... NO. NONO... NO. NONO... NO. NONO... NO. NONO. NOOOOooo. NOOOOooo. NOOOOooo. LOL
Sounds like not enough umph from the batteries, indirect injection diesels won't start unless the engine is turned fast enough.
