3D Printed Widebody! Sky-gea Build: Part 24

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We finally move on to the second side of this widebody and in this episode we make a start on assembling and test fitting the 3D prints. These parts have been printing off in the background for the past couple months. Unfortunately I ran into some issues with warping and so I have to re-print the rear flare, but that was going to take too long to fit into this episode so it's a slightly shorter one this time.
Also a short announcement that this will be my last video for a little while, most likely a couple of months as I focus more on completing this build than filming and editing. I will still be capturing all of the major steps and these will be covered as soon as videos resume.
Thanks again to Stan for his help with his work on the 3D scans and his advice on 3D printing. He has a website and Instagram where you can check out his work.

    Quick announcement *feel free to skip the announcement in the video* I'm going to be taking a break from uploading for the next couple months as I focus on completing this second side. It's going to be a lot of bodyfiller and sanding which I know is everyone's favorite part of my videos, but it does get a little repetitive. I'll still be filming the whole process and will carry on from here when the next video goes up, but hopefully I can cut back on the time I spend editing and get this side done in under 6 episodes. For all my Patreon supporters I will still be posting regular updates as well as these videos as soon as they are done. I will also be announcing a Patreon exclusive build very soon that I wont be sharing on KZread or Instagram. www.patreon.com/TofuAutoWorks

    Hey man do what you need to do with uploads we will be here when you are ready. the car is going epic . As for the 3d print each section on the rear seems to be a fair bit bigger i personally would add a grid to the back of the peices,only shallow just to reinforce the shape. The problem youre having is the plastic shrinks as it cools and youre essentialy printing like a vase mode.

    Your content is great - a welcome start to a weekend morning. Personally I'd very much rather that you continue to enjoy making great looking modifications to cars than stress over meeting editing / upload deadlines. It's a balance - and from what you've said it's too heavy on the edit/upload side, so addressing it in the manner you've stated sounds like a good plan.

    Stan has been an absolute legend and couldn't even imagine how much time this would have taken without him. Hopefully all of these teething issues are just a one time thing and once we figure out how to make 3D printing an effective part of the process it will massively speed up my future builds and maybe even remove the need for the initial hand shaping with foam entirely.

    To be honest, one of the most impressive parts of your builds is fitting in the video footage…I have my own KZread build channel and I don’t show a lot of my work in progress (hence the low subscription rates lol) simply because it constantly interferes with the build to much…and as for “deadlines”…SCREW THAT…when I’ve got something to show then I’ll make a video but I ain’t rushing a job for a deadline (hence my low subscription rate lol lol 😝)…anyway I’m happy to see your stuff when YOU ARE READY…love your work and don’t stress about us, we ain’t going anywhere 😉…cheers 🍻

    Thanks bro. Yeah it's pretty clear why KZread is more full of the standard vlog style builds with periodic updates. Filming every step of the process I'd say more than doubles how long everything takes and doing it with no narration as well means you have to be super deliberate with the flow of the video. So many times I have to stop myself from just going out and working on it because I want to do some random little thing out of sequence but it would just make the videos really confusing and all over the place. But it definitely has it's advantages too and being able to share this work with so many people is it's own reward.

I really enjoy your videos (as obviously a lot of other people do) and I really like your style, thanks for sharing…cheers 🍻

    Glad to see that at least the majority of the comments are supportive of your break, which they absolutely should be. Anybody who has undertaken a project of this magnitude knows how incredibly demanding it can be, and filming/editing/uploading the entire thing WHILE it's being done is exponentially more time-consuming and difficult. I'm just a hobbyist mechanic but a filmmaker by trade... I do this shit for a living. It's routine in the commercial world to shoot for 12-14+ hours and end up what amounts to ~30 seconds of content in the final edit (and that's with a crew of professionals). Anybody who thinks YT builds of this caliber "take too long" should try to produce one single episode of them doing _anything_ to their cars.

    Very cool use of 3D printing! Just a tip, for textured PEI beds, you don’t need glue stick. Try turning your bed temps up by 5-10c. If that doesn’t remove the need for glue stick, it suggests your first layer Z height is too far away from the bed. It should be just close enough that all the print lines are invisible and you just have a nice textured surface on the part. That said, for large parts that you are joining together, grab a smooth PEI bed plate. They are much better for functional parts and stick even better. I can even print ASA and ABS on my open frame printer on smooth PEI. The bed temps need to be 110c tho.

  • @TofuAutoWorks

    @TofuAutoWorks

    4 ай бұрын

    We tried just about everything to eliminate warping including these suggestions and more, the glue on the print bed definitely helped especially with these larger prints, but the main issue comes down to part geometry and the shape wanting to bow inwards as it cools which deforms the whole print. We've troubleshot it and already figured out a few ways to minimize the problems.

    So awesome you and Stan were able to mirror the mesh scans and print from them. Trying to re-engineer them and turn the mesh into a smooth parametric model would have been very time consuming. The prints turned out amazing! Love seeing other people's easy solutions for something I would have made difficult!! 😄 3d printing is very time consuming, unless you have multiple printers. Even two speeds things up incredibly. I print using an enclosed heated chamber with ABS. Do not get any warping. My printers (Intamsys Funmat HT's) have 10x10x10 inch build spaces with .4mm nozzles and one panel piece could take 3 days with my print settings. So getting a day for those prints is awesome! And they all look very nice. If you did want to go the enclosed printer route probably the best enclosed printer for the money right now is a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon but I am just going off of specs and reviews I have seen online. I never use PLA anymore after an air intake I had done years ago turned into a floppy noodle from the heat of the engine bay within 1 hour of driving. The 4 other ABS versions I have made all have been fine. For my body panel parts I designed them to insert together with a sleeve and just glued them together with JB Weld, then sanded and painted them. I would not recommend this as the pieces expand and contract in the sun and even though the seams were gone initially they showed up a few months later in some areas. Next time I might try some 3m panel bonder and a thin fiberglass skin...or maybe an epoxy coating. I have done the epoxy coating on a couple other non-seamed prints and they have held up well. I am assuming though you are using the prints to then make a mold of to ultimately make fiberglass panels. Then just trashing the prints

  • @TofuAutoWorks

    @TofuAutoWorks

    4 ай бұрын

    We're using a 1.0mm nozzle with a print volume of 420 x 420 x 500mm so it's one of the larger printers you can get in this price range. The enclosed printers didn't really seem necessary because when I'm printing I'll usually just put a heater next to the printer and the entire area sits at a pretty stable temperature. And yes PLA on all of these because they are only for plugs and will be scrapped once the moulds are made the same as the expanding foam. I wouldn't use PLA on a functional print unless I was intending on fully encasing it in reinforcement like carbon fiber or fiberglass in which case it would just be acting similar to a honeycomb core.

    Good call on printing with flanges, when I was printing the plug for my race car sidepods I did the sections in vase mode to avoid supports and get a smoother print but ended up spending way longer printing an internal support frame and shooting it full of expanding foam for support. The other big mistake I made was filling then sanding outside in the sun...PLA warps fast in the sun!

    Chris, No worries on the uploads brother. We will see them when they are ready to be seen. Aside from that, I'm thinking your growth may have you on the brink of needing someone else to help with editing so you can focus more on the doing aspect. However, my assumption is you are in the middle zone where you cant quite afford to pay someone to edit but also dont ha e the time to edit and maintain the same quality youve become known for. Its a really rough situation I am sure. You may have some followers who would be more than willing to donate some time and skill to do some of the editing for you. I suggest giving anyone interested some raw footage and see how they put it together and what the turn around time is. If no one stands out then oh well, but if you find yourself another option to continue growth at an increased rate of productivity then it may lead to a compensated editing position which will free up tons of your time. My friend and his wife both have channels and she had him start helping her with the editing and he is now full time just doing youtube along with her. Bith their channels are growing and hers being the bigger channel is the main focus but his videos still get done as well. You may find yourself a situation like this if you are willing to try it out. If I had the skill to edit I would volunteer my time to you at no charge but Im better at working with my hands than I am with a keyboard. Regardless, keep kicking all the ass on the planet!!

    I think when it's done a lot of people are not going to realize how much easier this project would have been for you if you just slapped the front end on with self tappers and made the whole thing look "internet good." Most youtubers will choose to do just good enough that the project looks good on a camera from 10 feet away (because that's their job,) and most people don't realize how much more work it is to get from that stage to a real, finished car that looks good up-close and in-person. I commend the effort man, it will pay off.

    Thanks man. Yeah the world is plagued with "instagram builds" that only need to look good for selected photos but I think what makes me different is that I don't really consider myself a KZreadr that builds cars, I put my cars first and filming / sharing on IG is just something else that I do, I could stop filming / posting but I'd still work on the cars. At the end of the day the builds always take priority.

    This method definitely seems to be increasing in popularity now that printers are becoming so much larger and cheaper. It's a great time to get into it.

    Your videos were always something I looked forward to so it’s a little disappointing to hear you won’t be uploading for some time but I understand you need a break and I’d much rather you put your energy into your projects and give them the attention they deserve. Take your time mate.

    You're just right taking time out. There is no rule that says you have to ruin your social/private life to meet non required targets, so as to please complete strangers. Look after number one.

    Build an enclosure for your printer, let it cool and pop off on its own, petg is good, ABS prob what was needed, in an enclosure, no more than 10% fan.. ABS is amazing. Also, aquanet for build surface always works

    Quality over quantity it is better that way. Actually, it is more exciting to watch one episode over 2 months of progress.
