#3. Casting Worthless Wood and Resin Pen Blank!!

This pen was made with wood from the beautiful rhododendrons from Sheringham park national park.
We picked up the sticks in after walking around the park in early May, if you can get to see them you will not regret it!!!
Cast with alumilite resin and blue and green pearl ex powder

    I've been turning pens for a couple of years now and more recently got into casting my own hybrid blanks. I haven't tried twigs yet but that looks really cool. I got to go out and collect some sticks. The pain looks great. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Thanks for posting the whole 3 part series. I needed to see the process! Out of curiosity (as a woodworker that has just started turning anything, pens first), why don't you cut off a majority of the waste first before turning? I just turned my first pen and it took longer than it should have because of rounding out the blank. I mean, if you know the approximate width of the wood needed at the widest part, why not just cut a bit wide of that and then turn?

  • @JamesGarwood

    @JamesGarwood

    You are welcome, after you get the hang of sharpening and using a roughing gouge it takes seconds to turn a square blank into a round blank, keep practicing and it will get easier, my problem starting out was sharpening my chisels enough, it's also fun making the chips fly everywhere!

    James Garwood Thanks for the quick reply! I ask because I’ve been casting Alumilite Clear “slow” for a few years now specifically pen blanks. When Alumilite came out with Clear cast I called and asked the advantage of Clear cast vs Alumilite slow. I couldn’t recall why they told me to stick with Clear slow. I read the spec sheets and now I recall...It’s the demold times that make the difference. It’s also the open time and now I see the price is quite different. With my current projects along with customers I make blanks for, demolding time is not an issue. I’ll be giving the Clear cast a whirl...thx!

    I love my old vice for pressing pens together! I've used different cramps and presses but the thing I use now over everything is my vice, so much accuracy and will never break, I've not had any problem with the resin yellowing yet, when it's finished turning it's only a couple of millimetres thick and full of pearl ex powder and dyes I don't think you would notice anyway 😁
