Resin Casting | Alumilute Ribbon Pen Blank Casting

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've been asked a few times to go over my process for casting Ribbon pen blanks. This video is not a "step by step" tutorial but does show and explain the basic process for casting an Alumilite Ribbon pen blank.
If you have any questions about the process please feel free to leave a comment below or hit me up on Social Media and I'll be more than happy to help you out.
The main reason I don't get into specifics is that there is no one solution... most of resin casting is trial and error - you need to find what works for you and the type of resin you choose to use.

Thanks for the info!! I’ve always wondered how this was done and knew it was more than just swirling some white resin in the color. Much appreciated. Subscribed

Thanks Phil! I've got 10 different colour options to choose from for the pen... Not sure which way I'll go but should be good no matter what I choose! 🤞

Love what my pressure pot has allowed me to create... I'll be doing some Hybrids sometime in the next few weeks as well! I've got some stabilized buckeye burl and box elder I'll be casting... Just trying to work a new concept for them!

Great video man! I’ve always used a thin sheet of Mylar material. Sand the front and back with 320 grit and cut into strips.

Hey I’m a pen turner and to save you a bunch of resin An time you can actually use milk jug material the same way as you do the ribbons of acrylic and your recycling so when you go to sell your pens you can use that as a good sales pitch,

Nice video! Enjoyed seeing your process. One question, did you cast the ribbon on a piece of glass or plexiglass? Thanks!

Hi Jon! Thanks for watching. I use glass for mine, the tape around the edges helps to lift the sheet off once it's fully cured without causing any damage. You could also use a picture frame if you're worried about the resin running over the edge, just make sure to tape over the frame down to the glass! 👍

Very cool looking blanks. How are you cutting the thin ribbons? I look forward to seeing the turned pens. Great job

  • @sleavesleather

I use just a regular pair of scissors, the ribbons are thin enough they cut really easy - me and utility knives don't play nice! 👍

Ok great video only question.. What resin? If AL clear or clear slow how did you avoid bubbles on the sheet pour? Is it thin enough not to have the normal non pressurized issues?

Hey Jeremy! Thanks for the question. I've used Alumilute Clear, Clear Slow and Amazing Clear Cast for casting the ribbons. No bubbles in any of them since it's such a thin layer.

how do you cleanly remove the ribbons from the glass? I tried this and I had to use a razor scraper and it came off in chunks. Do I need to heat it up as I'm removing it? Use a mold release? Am I using the wrong alumilite, I'm just starting out and got some amazing clear cast from hobby lobby just to try out. Thanks,

Thanks for watching and for the question. The first thing you need to do is make sure the glass is 100% clean. If there is any film of any kind on the glass it's going to stick. I've actually swapped over to casting my ribbons on a silicone baking sheet now thanks to Pam Highland Boxes.

Thanks for the reply, that's a great idea the silicone baking sheet. I just broke my sheet of glass trying to get some ribbons off so I'll be going that route from now on!
