I am prototyping silicone molds to fit in my 5 gallon pressure pot. I like to make pen blanks and make videos on showing beginner resin casters how to make pen blanks. My problem with store bought and even silicone molds that I have made is, they are not deep enough. I end up spilling resin on the way to the Pressure pot. I would also like to make better use of the size of the pot and make as many pen planks as possible with every resin cast.
Last time I made a form for silicone molds I just used screws to hold everything together, after a few uses the form just didn't last. This time I want the forms to last as long as possible, so I am making them more robust and durable.

    Use water to fill your molds to test the area. Rice has way too many air spaces and fulgurations in those gaps depending on how you handle it.

  • @JakeThompson

    @JakeThompson

    Жыл бұрын

    I didn’t want to get the molds wet.. I was filming this and didn’t have time.. after I’ve made a cast I just weigh the cast .. the resin I use is by weight so it works out.

  • @nitrousman8882
    @nitrousman88822 жыл бұрын

    Lots of great mold making information here! Thanks for sharing it. Just one suggestion. The use of rice is really not a very good choice for approximating the required volume of resin. The best would be a liquid since it is the most dense and so the most representative of the actual volume of space you are trying to fill with resin. Do it once, let the mold dry and you know accurately how much resin each mold requires - literally to the millilitre. Next best would be fine salt or sugar. I guess you're satisfied with the casts you get using pressure alone, but degassing first and then finishing with a pressure pot will make the resultant blanks perfect (might be overkill if you use sufficient pressure).

  • @JakeThompson

    @JakeThompson

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks.. I didn’t use liquid because I really didn’t want to have to dry it before I cast into it.. I was on a deadline for this video… I do very beginner videos and try to not get too technical.. but you are exactly right

    Great video! I just have one question. What's the reason for using rice instead of water? Seems like water would be exact. Is it because you don't want any moisture in the molds?

  • @JakeThompson

    Just a question on reusing the silicon mold. You said that with the hand mold, you'd be able to take it apart. You'd put the pieces into another mold. Basically, it is 100% reusable with other molds if you are unhappy with it. Is this correct?

  • @JakeThompson

    @JakeThompson

    Жыл бұрын

    As long as it doesn’t have mold release on it… you can also wash mold release off.. I use scrap pieces of silicone all the time as fillers when I don’t need to use new silicone for the entire mold. I also make sure the silicones are a similar hardness.. I wouldn’t mix super different silicones together.. I hope this answers your question 😊

    I probably missed this but for prototyping purposes why not fill the mold with water? Surely that's the best way to get the volume of it? I know rice is the go-to for molds you can't get wet and/or want to use right away but in this case it's a silicone prototype and you can just leave it to air dry Great video otherwise, much better audio!

  • @JakeThompson

    @JakeThompson

    3 жыл бұрын

    I appreciate the compliment on the audio.. I’m starting to get somewhere on that.. I normally just use the rice.. so it was kind of just habit.. I am going to fill them with water to know exactly how much resin.. pretty much just left it like that to show that there’s always something to change.. I said in the video that I knew it would use more resin and I just left it like that to show that the rice leaves you a little low, but gets you in the ballpark.
