I am prototyping silicone molds to fit in my 5 gallon pressure pot. I like to make pen blanks and make videos on showing beginner resin casters how to make pen blanks. My problem with store bought and even silicone molds that I have made is, they are not deep enough. I end up spilling resin on the way to the Pressure pot. I would also like to make better use of the size of the pot and make as many pen planks as possible with every resin cast.
Last time I made a form for silicone molds I just used screws to hold everything together, after a few uses the form just didn't last. This time I want the forms to last as long as possible, so I am making them more robust and durable.

Good presentation Jake. Well worth my time viewing. I watched another vid of yours on converting a painters pot into a pressure pot which I will be doing myself tomorrow. I am in Australia so dimensions are in metric so will have a guy helping me. Stay good mate. Cheers, Dave, Beachmere, Australia

Amazing Video Jake! The Molds look super cool! If I had a CNC machine I would try myself. If you do pursue the idea and decide to sell them, I will defiantly buy one. I like the #JakeBlanks on the one mold. The blanks look amazing. Cant wait for the 30K video, and all others you have coming up! Great Video as always.

Use water to fill your molds to test the area. Rice has way too many air spaces and fulgurations in those gaps depending on how you handle it.
@JakeThompson
Жыл бұрын
I didn’t want to get the molds wet.. I was filming this and didn’t have time.. after I’ve made a cast I just weigh the cast .. the resin I use is by weight so it works out.
Lots of great mold making information here! Thanks for sharing it. Just one suggestion. The use of rice is really not a very good choice for approximating the required volume of resin. The best would be a liquid since it is the most dense and so the most representative of the actual volume of space you are trying to fill with resin. Do it once, let the mold dry and you know accurately how much resin each mold requires - literally to the millilitre. Next best would be fine salt or sugar. I guess you're satisfied with the casts you get using pressure alone, but degassing first and then finishing with a pressure pot will make the resultant blanks perfect (might be overkill if you use sufficient pressure).
@JakeThompson

Thanks.. I didn’t use liquid because I really didn’t want to have to dry it before I cast into it.. I was on a deadline for this video… I do very beginner videos and try to not get too technical.. but you are exactly right
Awesome prototype if you ever decided to cell the multiple blank mold I would buy it

Man, how can I get one of your cool molds for pen blanks! Also, does the rice really work that well? Why not use water? Oklahoma here

Nothing wrong with using water.. I just didn’t want to have to dry the molds out before I poured some resin. Stay tuned on the molds.. I want to get them perfect before I sell them .
Nice job. Thoughts about making large molds say 24”x48”??
@JakeThompson
3 жыл бұрын
That would be crazy expensive to make.. HDPE plastic might be a better way to go 👍
Great video! I just have one question. What's the reason for using rice instead of water? Seems like water would be exact. Is it because you don't want any moisture in the molds?
@JakeThompson
2 жыл бұрын
After I made a few of them, I used some water.. you are right.. I really just didn’t want to get the mold wet.
Just a question on reusing the silicon mold. You said that with the hand mold, you'd be able to take it apart. You'd put the pieces into another mold. Basically, it is 100% reusable with other molds if you are unhappy with it. Is this correct?
@JakeThompson
Жыл бұрын
As long as it doesn’t have mold release on it… you can also wash mold release off.. I use scrap pieces of silicone all the time as fillers when I don’t need to use new silicone for the entire mold. I also make sure the silicones are a similar hardness.. I wouldn’t mix super different silicones together.. I hope this answers your question 😊

Have u ever made a mold where the object you r making had a hole down the center? Pen blanks have to be drilled why not make them so you have the hole in the center? Saves on acrylic, especially for duck call or goose call blanks?

Absolutely 👍 www.northsidecustomcrafts.com/new-products/silicone-molds
I probably missed this but for prototyping purposes why not fill the mold with water? Surely that's the best way to get the volume of it? I know rice is the go-to for molds you can't get wet and/or want to use right away but in this case it's a silicone prototype and you can just leave it to air dry Great video otherwise, much better audio!
@JakeThompson
3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the compliment on the audio.. I’m starting to get somewhere on that.. I normally just use the rice.. so it was kind of just habit.. I am going to fill them with water to know exactly how much resin.. pretty much just left it like that to show that there’s always something to change.. I said in the video that I knew it would use more resin and I just left it like that to show that the rice leaves you a little low, but gets you in the ballpark.
How much are your molds
