DIY Silicone Pen Mold for Casting Pen Blanks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week I am making a DIY silicone pen mold for casting pen blanks. I wanted to do a do it yourself silicone mold for pen blanks for a while. I chose some silicone from alumilite that is called quickset silicone. It advertises that a vacuum chamber for degassing is not necessary. I figured that it would be fun to test it out. So first I made a mold to pour the silicone into. I took my time on this and I am very happy I took the extra time on it.after the silicone mold was complete I cast some all resin pen blanks and 2 hybrid pen blanks with alumilite clear slow resin.

    @@JakeThompson years ago, (25 or so) i was a quality inspector for the company i was at. I did inspections for awhile on a fiberglass line they had. They made dampers (square and round) out of fiberglass for air and liquid/solid material handling. A buddy of mine ran the line, and introduced me to casting resin from that line in molds that he hand made. I was also able to add some poured resin features to a couple of my hunting rifle stocks. Who knew it would be such a big thing years later!!!

    Jake, thanks for the video, Blanks look great. Do you have an estimate on what the mold cost ?

  • @JakeThompson

    @JakeThompson

    4 жыл бұрын

    S. Fry Jr. For this one it took about 3 1/2 pounds of silicone.. so about 75 bucks worth of silicone.. if you buy it in the bigger sets. They have 5 and 10 pound sets that are considerably cheaper when you buy the bigger set.

  • @LarryDMitchell
    @LarryDMitchell3 жыл бұрын

    Good video Jake. The only question I have is Return On Investment. How does the cost of the quick set silicone (you used quite a bit), MDF and your time compare with just buying a pre-cast mold? I'm sure you can't buy the size of mold you specifically made but maybe you can use simple math to figure out the cost of each blank.

    It is expensive to make, but it’s fun and I’m really just showing folks how to make silicone molds for themselves.. I haven’t figured it up, but I have the mold I wanted and was able to practice.. I’m actually making some more advanced forms to make silicone pen molds from.. I will be calculating how much I have in each one because I’m thinking people might want to buy the next ones I make. 👍👍 I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

    John Meeks If I got wax underneath the middle parts then the glue wouldn’t stick.. you could definitely wax it while it’s apart but would have to be careful not to get the wax on the bottom of the pieces.
