Silicone bowl mold for resin, epoxy and woodturning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome back!! In this video I'll be doing a major crash course in making a silicone bowl mold for resin and epoxy for woodturning! I've been wanting a silicone mold that I could cast all epoxy and resin bowls with that would allow more options for turning on the lathe. I've always had a thing for resin and it's possibilities and now, I can really get down to business!
I used Alumilite mold putty 15 to create a thin mold that would have worked out if the original wood bowl was smaller but I made it a bit too big lol. So I ended up using Alumilite plat 25 silicone to correct my failure. It still needed something to seal where the seam was since it was only 1/2" thick. Which isn't much to seal up that much resin.
But like said in the video, this is a learning process and just a crash course. But now I know and knowing is the first step to better processes!
I used Alumilite amazing clear resin with eye candy mica powder to fill it with. Total ammount of resin used was 2.5L or 0.6 gallons. Which isn't that bad.
Don't forget, you can used code EPPS10 for 10% off Alumilite products and code EPPS15 for 15% off Eye Candy mica powder.

    Thanks! I wouldn’t say it saves time. All epoxy pieces are nice but holy crap at how much longer it takes turning them 😳. Can’t remove as much making passes in epoxy like you can with wood.

    @@EppsCreations I just meant you're turning away significantly less resin using the mold you made than without it. I'm not a turner, but I'm fascinated by watching the creativity that you guys have.

    It took 2.5L or 0.6 gallons. But yes, I can’t show the goodies all in one video 😉. I have to do a commissioned elm burl and epoxy pepper mill so that’ll be up first. So many things going on at once lol.

    That's pretty cool, Epps!!! Love the coloring and process. CA tools makes a 10 gallon pressure pot that has a 14 ¾ inner diameter too, in case you weren't aware. It's a bit pricey for sure....

    I enjoyed the Mold Putty demo and creating a 2 piece mold. I can definitely see using them both in the future... That said however, I'm struggling to justify whether or not it would be worth it to spend that much money on mold material and resin, (I estimated about $200+...) just to make a plastic bowl... I'm not sure a person could easily recoup the overhead it took to make it. Should they want to sell it... Thanks, Mike

    Honestly, most of the stuff I make is just because I want to. I push myself to try new things. But yes, the numbers are favorable. That’s $200 one time and you can use little epoxy to fill it. On the same token like I was saying in the video this was a test run. I’ll be able to use much much less silicone on one that’s just a little smaller. Just have to make another one.

    I'd been rolling around similar ideas in my head the past few weeks but you nailed it. That color combo was sick af. Curious how you refine the process of molding as you go along and dying to see the finished bowl, too! Nice work.

    @@EppsCreations I wasn't quite clear as to why you needed the added silicone (clear type) over the top of the blue mold. Was it to keep it from flexing and going out of shape or why take that extra step?

  • @EppsCreations

    @EppsCreations

    2 жыл бұрын

    It did add some strength to the mold but the main intention was to allow it to flow down to the bottom of the mold and create a perfect outside wall so I could seal it with flashing since the 1/2” thick silicone section wasn’t working. Not enough to properly seal on its own.
