Jake Thompson

I love Resin Casting and making tutorial videos for folks who want to learn how to get into Resin Art. I will also cover woodworking and woodturning techniques and tool reviews.

Thank you for watching my videos, and I hope I could help you.

    Looks great; love the blacklight effect. As far as the dimples go, I've been struggling with that for some laser-cut 3D effect resin inlays where I'm trying to use an epoxy finish after all the colors have been added and cured. I know that multiple finish coats do not make the dimples go away. Some research seems to indicate that one needs to sand down to remove the dimple and then apply another finish coat. I am going to try that next to see if it works.

  • @JakeThompson
    @JakeThompson2 күн бұрын

    Thank you Mark.. when I was looking up how to do this. I f I remember correctly.. Every single one was sanded and had a second coat applied.. I was trying to do it with only one coat. Maybe next time 😀😀

    It looks great! I have misted the epoxy with DNA or Isopropyl Alcohol(while it is turning) to release small bubbles. It usually thins it just enough to release air bubbles.

    Those bottle stoppers turned out great! Does a polishing compound last on a surface for many years, or is it a temporary fix to help create a glossy look? I make pens, including resin pens, and i would like to know if applying layers of a polishing compound will help to create a very long-lasting, glossy look and protective layer.

  • @JakeThompson
    @JakeThompson2 күн бұрын

    Thank you.. glad you enjoyed.. The magic juice is a very popular polish for resin pens. I haven’t heard it doesn’t last.

    That's pretty darn gosh dang good. As for improvements, every process can be improved upon, but you'll wind up in diminishing returns awful fast, where you're puttin' in 90% more effort to try and get that from 95% perfect to 96%. Anything that can automated and/or keep you from unconsciously making mistakes can help a bunch, like addressing the whole tripping on a cord bit. Might be able to make a little plastic paint drop cloth tent to go over it while its curing to keep any other dust out... but even that could introduce more dust. Might be able to distribute and get the epoxy layer thinner by hitting it with compressed air, but it'll make a mess... I guess the simple but expensive thing would be to just experiment and mess up a lot, to see which trees are the wrong ones to bark up. I still think the whole thing is pretty freakin' awesome though! 💪🦆👍

    It looks Amazing to me 🥰 With that said, the dimpling could be a couple of things. One would be that oils from your hands got on the piece before adding the resin finish, causing the resin to separate in those spots. The second could be the resin got to hot causing it to shrink and separate in spots. I'm sure there are other reasons but those are the 2 I have dealt with often. I find letting the resin thicken up just a little before applying it and trying not to use the torch excessively helps. I don't know about the slower curing resin for this, I've never done this with slow cure, but you should Definitely cover your piece. Even without the extension cord, there's always something floating in the air that finds it's way to wet resin 🤦🏼‍♀️
