    nice contrast in colours and excellent walk through of the whole process thanks. I’ve never finished with CA so that’s an idea for trial. I found wet sanding above 1200 grit gave a better finish ( to 12000 grit) but seems “yorkshire grit” paste may improve even on that. Only suggestion is to curve the top section to avoid the distinct step that seems to be left on the finished pen. But really enjoyed this video , many thanks

    Thanks Ian, I have never tried yorkshire grit out, I will have to get some, do you use it to finish pema with? I have changed a few things on how I make these pens now including where I get the kits and bushings from and how I measure them, they fit much nicwr now, 😁

  • @ianwelford1948

    @ianwelford1948

    James I found it easier to make my own bushings specifically for each kit measuring the parts with a vernier calliper. I then turn th bush8ngs on my metal work lathe and mark which kit they are for. To answer your question most seem to use yorkshire grit, which is a self rescuing grinding paste ie it get so finer as you polish it in or onto your work. Heath seems to use it as his final,stage before buffing ( correct me if i am wrong on that Heath ). I am urging off resin casting currently as can’t decide how or whether to dry blanks first. I have a vacuum chamber and fancy trying vacuum water removal rather than leaving in the oven to dry the timber. I have been procrastinating all week about this and finally retrieved the vacuum chamber lid last night so need to give it a go. What have you found works? regards and happy christmas recovery and new year anticipation. Ian

    @@ianwelford1948 I would love a metal lathe to play on, I might one to play on since I really fancy trying to make a kitless pen some time, I do like the CA finish on a pen because it is so hard wearing and doesn't come off in time like a dead finish would, I guess that would be what would happen with a yorkshire grit finish, I will see the chaps from there soon at maker's central next year so I'll have a chat with them there, heath knuckles will be there as well so I'll ask him as well! I find were I keep my wood is really dry and doesn't move at all when I cast it, the only thingbi put in the oven to make sure they are dry are pine cones, I've had problems with them moving before, is love to hear how you get on with the vacuum chamber, Merry Christmas Ian and wish you the best in the new year 😁
