    It might be easier to ask forgiveness than permission :P The one thing I want to mention before you consider running out and buying one... most "organic materials" give much better results in the resin if they are stabilized first using a vacuum chamber and stabilizing resins. The end result will be far less susceptible to getting air bubbles, and it makes the material harder for cleaner cutting. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to show this part of the process because I haven't been able convince my wife yet that I need a vacuum chamber....Lol

    Stabilizing is critical. I have used a pressure pot, but find it did not make much difference. I also cast in a vertical mold. I go in with a contrasting color, let that sit and fill the cups and then add additional colors. I quarter the blank which gives me 4 pen blanks from one pour.@@MichaelZurcher

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    Thanks! I use plastic because CA glue is expensive and you waste a ton when you use paper towels...it soaks in to them...also I just like that the CA and plastic don't stick to each other. But really it's just my preference.

    Awesome video! At the beginning, when you say you take the "Stabilized Pinecone and trim the edges", what do you mean by stabilized? Does it need to be stabilized before going into resin or is the resin what "stabilizes" it?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I stabilize my pinecones before casting them, basically that means they are soaked in a special stabilizing resin under vacuum until all the air has been drawn out...then taken off vacuum and that draws the stabilizing resin into and fills the tiny air pours. Then they get cured in an over....then I cast them in resin.

    Very exciting work. This art form would make awesome beads and buttons. What else do you envision substituting for the pinecone? Would used wine corks work?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Robin! Glad you found it of interest :) People substitute all kinds of things...you name it people have probably encased it in resin. I think wine corks might work if you per-process them in a thin stabilizing resin and a vacuum chamber prior to the resin casting. Anything soft and spongy would need to be dried and hardened before using with the resin. That would also allow you to turn it on the lathe too. I don't have a vacuum pump or chamber yet so I have to rely on harder materials or "per-stabilized" materials at the moment.

    hey very nice finish mate, i aboslutely love the colour choices using in theis project, i have been using blood reed and white looks good to . i am having a problem with air bubbles in my castings, i noticed you advised your cones were stabalised, i am assuming this is a neeeded step to prevent the issues i am having. yay another peice of equipment i need to bribe my parnter into getting me lol

    Michael, I don't often comment on videos much anymore but this one is awesome. I live in Florida & there are pine cones everywhere, but they're all too large for pens. They might work for bottle stoppers and call blanks. Where did you get the small cones ?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    +jim renderer thanks! Not sure the size of the cone really matters...its the core that really gives the look. In PA the pinecones typically tend to be long and slender. If you end up making one, I'd love to see what you come up with!

    which pen hardware kit did you use for this? I like that size

    I picked it up from WoodCraft....it's called the Navigator Screw Cap Rollerball Pen Kit :) I think if I made another one I wouldn't do the screw cap on a blank that needs to match grain or pattern orientation...it's tricky to get the spine to line up when you screw it on...you can...it just takes some trial.

    Very nice looking pen. I have a Harbor Freight pot but looking to upgrade, what brand is your pot?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I had the Harbor Freight pot but it always leaked and I found tightening that pot was always a hassle to get an even tightness. I purchased the one in this video from TCPglobal.com The make them in all different sizes. I just went for the 2.5 gallon because I didn't plan on doing anything super large. I did have to modify it a little because there is a center shaft for mixing that I didn't want. I just removed it and added a threaded fitting to it to block the air flow out. Good luck!

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    The pressure pot I use is the 2.5 gallon pot from TCP Global. www.tcpglobal.com/TCP-PT8320.html#.Whtc6p9OlnE You need to modify this tank slightly and take off the agitator bar. Hope this helps!

    What does it mean to be “stabilized”?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    5 жыл бұрын

    You soak them in a thin resin inside a vacuum chamber and the resin penetrates through the material and when it cures it is hard with no air pockets.

    Why do you use plastic to apply your CA glue finish? I dont think Ive seen that before.

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Brendan Kearney I use plastic because I found that it doesn't leave as many streaks as paper towels, and you can use less because it doesn't soak in...less waste, and it doesn't soak through and get on your fingers...just my preference. Thanks for watching!Cheers!

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    3 жыл бұрын

    you can, but I found that stabilizing gives a better finish and cuts down the likely hood of air bubbles forming...I tried it in the beginning but found I got much better and more consistent results when stabilizing

    @@MichaelZurcher I don’t have a way to stabilize them though. How else can you stabilize without a vaccum set up?

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kandiecandelaria1423 I don't know o any other way to do it...I have seen people make smaller setups with a cheap harbor freight vac pump and some mason jars, not saying I recommend that...but there are videos out there showing how to set that up. other than that, you can make them without stabilizing, just get some thin CA glue and when you finish sanding let that CA soak into the pinecone....then resand and finish. The stabilizing helps prevent moisture from reabsorbing into the cone once it's finished ...the ones I have made without stabilizing tend to "swell" and get a raised surface where the pinecone is...and I don't know if it might eventually separate or crack the resin over time

  • @MichaelZurcher

    @MichaelZurcher

    4 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately I don't sell my blanks at the moment, with pinecone blanks there is always the possibility that there are small air bubbles that can get trapped and I'd feel bad selling them and having something like that go out.
