I think both being a Manager and a Leader is being able to have ascendancy over other people. The major difference is simply that Leaders tend to be more emotionnal and people centric, while Managers tend to be more analytical and task oriented. Personnaly I feel like I'm able to be both and I switch from one to the other by letting my emotions loose or restraining them.

I also think there has to be a certain level of arrogance to be a great leader. Not someone who is very cocky, but if you do not believe in your self, no one else can. I plan on making a leadership series too, great video.

A leader needs confidence; in both themselves and their team. Sometimes, depending upon the personality of the person, that confidence can seem to be arrogance.

I prefer the term confident but, it’s a very thin line and, nobody likes arrogance, it’s a natural and globally shared human reaction to arrogance in any situation so, this quote works well in that regard; “Humble yourself before life humbled you.”

wow. So me and another kid are the captains in the wrestling team, I just realized that He's a FANTASTIC Manager, he keeps everyone in check but has little acceptance for failing, I see myself as a leader, I encourage, lead by example, and when people mess up I try my very hardest to ALWYA lend a helping hand. Even to kids that aren't on my team but if I see them outside in the hallway very upset at themselves. I get shut down half the time but those few times where I HELP people get outta a funk, that's why I do it

Thank you for this interesting perspective on the difference between leaders and managers. I enjoyed the subtleties you raised. The differences arise mostly due to positional vs voluntary authority. Leaders typically govern over voluntary associations and managers over formal structured organisations. The reward systems are different in each as are the power each has to control and influence. By its nature, leaders need to influence positively while manager can use either positive or negative influence. However, your summary is an over simplification. Leaders of political organisations cannot be as radical as they may wish as they need to balance public and voter sentiment against their desired goals. Furthermore, they may be driven by numbers too - voter numbers or polls.

Be a leader is influence people, inspire them, take some risks, have a vision, etc (like Pat), but you need to be a good manager too (or have one). I consider myself as a leader-manager, sometimes more a leader than a manager and viceversa. Thanks for this great video.

As a person dealing with authority issue, I rather go with a leader that put me in front of my responsibilities and let me do my thing....

+Valuetainment Many of these qualities together show that the manager is to care more for the present execution whereas the Leader looks towards the future and reputation if anything. I don't watch TV all that much but I think one of the best ways this can be seen is in SUITS. Another way to describe Oak/Willow is that the Manager shows off dictation while the Leader expresses his or her empathy. Excellent comparison and thanks for your time and effort!!

By the way between Manager and Leader, I think I mostly take the Leader side. I can speak more when it comes to something to do between people rather than social situations. I think the qualities that make me shine in leadership are vision, address conflict, moving people forward / influence, giving credit, value, over-achieving, and love for risk.

I'm 80/20 on the leader side. The leader in me sets the vision and goals, defines direction and strategy. Then I try to become more managerial to execute all of it, work inside the boxes and make mini-systems to get stuff done efficiently and promptly. Leader oversees (being my own boss), manager zooms in and focus (diligently follow the leader's plan). I'm still learning as I go (still solo) but when I expand I plan to surround the leader in me with council/mentors, and essentially delegate the management to people better than me at execution and technical skills.
