Seth Godin - Everything You (probably) DON'T Know about Marketing

Today on Behind The Brand, Seth Godin details everything you (probably) don't know about marketing. Marketing is often a misunderstood concept often viewed as simply creating demand and driving brand awareness. Seth Godin dispels this view by explaining the difference between brand marketing and direct marketing, evaluating the value of a brand in marketing, and reviewing key differences between psychographic and demographic marketing.
His great insight into what we don't know about marketing is adopted from his bestseller - Seth Godin, This Is Marketing.

1:00 A brand is how much extra I am paying above my substitute. If I’m not paying extra, I don’t have a brand. 6:10 Culture defeats everything. 7:00 Human beings make decisions based on the status of who is going up and who is going down, and what that means to us (“us” a certain group of people). 8:17 Don’t do it cause you’re making a living. Make a living cause you’re doing it. 16:50 Nike vs Hyatt 17:25 A brand is a promise to people, a short-hand, an expectation. They should ask themselves: “what should I expect the next time?” 22:00 As a Marketer, you have to have empathy for the people you are willing to serve. 27:00 The medium can change, but the mission will remain consistent. People don’t think what they want, they think what they dream of. 32:10 Now, everything is a click away, you can sell anything you want. But you don’t come at the customer anymore, let them come at you. 31:40 You don’t market at them anymore, you market with them. 32:50 Everyone is not the goal, someone is the goal. 42:30 As a Marketer, you have to willingly dance with the tension a customer feels before actually taking an action.

MY portfolio has good companies, however they have been red all this year. This is my first year of investing and have been down 35% in the March/April sell off, and now down 17% in this sell off. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me nervous and sad. I don't know if I should sell everything or just sit and wait.

I can't speak for anyone else here in the comments - But can we all just agree that Seth is an absolute HERO because of all the lunatic entrepreneurs he's helped to see the big picture. Who else has always KNOWN that opportunity & abundance has truly been absolutely everywhere... But you've always been missing that little somethin somethin'. I can see now that i've been missing the most integral part of business that nearly everyone seems to be glazing over. Are you in it to HELP people, and do you even know or CARE about the people you're inevitably going to be selling to. Would you approach a stranger in a hairdressing salon and offer to cut their hair if you had NO interest or ability to do it. JUST BECAUSE YOU COULD - Doesn't mean you should. Nobody cares that you have the best business cards on earth or the slickest elevator pitch known to man. You still can't cut hair; And wont want to be in 12 months time either. Now. Just back away slowly from that franchise you already KNOW you will get bored with in 2 weeks time. AND GO CREATE SOMETHING REMARKABLY HELPFUL FOR THE PEOPLE YOU ACTUALLY GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ON THIS EARTH. Thankyou Seth, you've truly changed my perspective for the better! I'm astounded at how one person be so utterly kind, compassionate, clear-headed, generous, humble & inspiring. Can't wait to start destroying every book & Blog you've ever written haha

@@BehindtheBrand I have been on a complete binge, thankyou for all your hard work!! Your crushing story of reaching out to your mother broke my heart; Seth's advice was both brutal but compassionate. in more or less words - Wether you choose to save yourself or be the victim; Nobody Is Coming. Nobody is coming to save you, cheer you up, fix your broken heart or give you the answers. No matter how many millions of people you reach out to. Go find your tribe - share with them - support them - and they will support you back in WAVES.

I've been following Seth for a really long time. He always has such amazing insights. Creating value for your audience should be the 1st thing any business focuses on... You should absolutely go out and get this book. I've read a few other books from Seth and they never disappoint. They not only provide understanding, but also some necessary mental motivation. The only other book that I would say provides anywhere near the value on Direct Marketing is 'Scientific Advertising'. I was able to find a free ebook copy online (www.TestedAdvertisingMethod.com). But basically books are the way to go. It's amazing that leaders of the industry are willing to share their knowledge with the public.

This video is a must-watch for anyone who wants to truly understand marketing and its nuances. Seth Godin's explanations about the difference between brand and direct marketing, and the value of a brand in marketing are eye-opening. It's fascinating to learn about the key differences between psychographic and demographic marketing and how they play a crucial role in shaping a successful marketing strategy. I love how Seth Godin's insights are drawn from his bestseller, "This Is Marketing," making it easy to dive deeper into the topic. Kudos to Behind The Brand for bringing such valuable content to their viewers!

Seth has so many valuable things to say. Some of his observations are quite valid. He is a profound thinker in human behaviour. He clearly does not KNOW or ever learned the science of Marketing. To be declared a shadow of Peter Drucker insults Drucker. This heading is both misrepresentative and dangerous! Seth has so many valuable things to say and some of what he says here is quite valid; he is a profound thinker in consumer behaviour BUT he gets too much wrong to be trusted.

I really resonate with his anti-infinity stance, and his idea about being some-truistic rather than altruistic. It feels much more aligned with sanity and balance to set to serve a small dedicated group of people (of whatever kind), rather than aiming for "a billion followers", or customers or whatever. Plus, you are more likely to keep reiterating for quality that way, as you get continuous feedback from the customers that you are intimately connected to. And so, interestingly, are more poised for sustainable success in the long run... Thanks, Behind the Brand! And thanks, Seth!
