Believe it or not, people buy them up like hot cakes. I mean when you need a truck, you need it now. No time to let it sit for months. And they don’t sit on lots. That’s RAMs that sit on lots for months , literally.

The commenters complaining about the price still don’t understand that things didn’t get more expensive, but rather their currency has been devalued by inflation.

Nah it’s a scam bro inflation is a myth. Look up how much profits companies have been making from all sectors of business such as grocery stores and other food business, they blamed inflation but they have record profits. Same with these car companies it’s a myth brother

Price increases are literally the definition of inflation...it isn't some separate thing. One is calculated (inflation) from the other (prices).

I really love the fact that a manual midsize pickup exists in 2024. I still hate that they got away from the traditional single/double din stereo. My I just installed a double din pioneer cd/sd/bluetooth/etc stereo in my 2021 crosstrek (with a manual) and it fixed the only thing I hated about my car (the weak/slow radio).

Took a 24 manual tacoma out for a test drive the other day. Have driven many manual trans vehicles and enjoyed most , this 24 manual Tacoma was the least enjoyable, Rev hang and the pause between shifts needed was painful , power was adequate and nothing else .Id regret buying the manual by the end of the day , Will see how the trd pro is when available, prefer manual over auto but not in this case

Hi John! Thank you for your comment! I agree that there is a notable pause between the shifts. I couldn’t figure out if it was a combination of the long throws, heavy flywheel and underpowered engine for the mass of the truck, but you’ve hit the nail on the head. It’s the rev hang. Perhaps, this is how Toyota makes the truck more reliable, by making it gutless and conserving the components to avoid “banging gears.” I’m slightly disappointed myself, but it seems this is how most modern manual transmissions behave. Well, except for my XTerra’s gearbox, which is a pleasure to drive, but that’s an old truck (2006) with 180k miles on it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYmhmrSNlaiclLQ.htmlsi=-ib7o5iCAAenwecQ

I wonder if that glove box will make noise when or "if" off road going over bumps rocks and stuff "if" one was to take it off road.. or even if driving on bad roads ... but i guess when stuff in inside glove box it wont move much. nice that it is manual transmission but not sure how I feel about only 4 cylinder

Thanks Stan! I was surprised how well the turbo I4 did. It is the same horse power as the outgoing V6, but significantly more torque than V6, specifically at low rpm. The acceleration is brisk. I was impressed

My FJ"s glove box moves around like that when you push on it. oddly enough it doesn't rattle even on washboard roads. Toyota sorcery.

Have heard the manual cannot be driven aggressively/properly because the engine has been tuned to hang the revs between shifts to meet emissions. Is this true?

  • @MaximumDIYGarage

Yes, it is definitely not a race car and the throws are long. Just like in the previous gen Tacoma. Still, I didn’t feel significant turbo lag as the torque comes in fast at 1,500rpm. I wouldn’t expect any performance driving out of a pickup. Just like the Bronco and Wrangler, these are truck transmissions and do not compare to sporty or sports car transmissions. You just have to adapt to that driving style if you want to enjoy a long-term reliability.

I’ve found that the different drive modes affect the feel of the clutch, throttle response, and rev hang in between shifts. I’ve been driving mine around in eco mode with imt engaged. It stays in eco but if I shut it off, get back in it, and forget to engage the imt button, there will be a noticeable undesirable lag/stumble in between shifts that will completely go away when engaged. Sport mode/imt pretty much eliminates all the crappy new vehicle with manual trans feeling.

So this base SR would cost about $45k with tax, the loose glove box would always bother me, the second row is short on leg room and space and I wouldn’t sit back there, the spray on bed liner is not needed, the five foot bed is useless for large stuff. Truck is nice but not for $45k. Who the heck would spend $45k on a base truck? Toyota and the dealers just dont get it. Nice review by Max DIY Garage.

So is everything these days. I’m not making an excuse that this truck is worth $40k though. 30 years ago it’s equivalent was half today’s price. But back then fuel was under 80c/gal. Today, the fuel is 3x as much as it was 30 years ago.

They did that to get better side impact crash ratings. The previous design didn’t have a solid b pillar which didn’t do well in side impact crash tests.
