replacing the pcv valve and the hose that connects the 2 valve covers got rid of my p0420 code!!
Awesome! Yes, sometimes a vacuum leak can cause the engine run rich, which may trigger the code. Keep an eye on it. The code may come back if the catalytic converter has been ruined. Hopefully it won’t happen and you’ve fixed the issue!
Sorry. A Taco RR drive, king cab and a 2.4L should not be above $25K.
Agree 100%
46K is way to much for a SR5 Tacoma. The Sports and Off Roads I've seen near me were all around 51k, which is insane for a 4 cylinder turbo Tacoma. These weren't even hybrid. The Pros' and Trail Hunter editions are starting at like 64k-65k. Toyota has lost their damn minds!
That is insane! Out of reach with reality! Most of us can’t afford even 1/2 of that car/truck payment!
Piss moan bitch complain 4th gen tacomas are too expensive blah blah. Go buy the competition then. You get what you pay for. My money is on Toyota. Certainly they have earned my business given how absurdly reliable my last 20 years with their cars and trucks have been. Look around, everything is filled with Tech and expensive as fuck.
i thought all 2024s were 4x4??
I’ve seen them as RWD in the southern states when I did a nationwide search on cars.com: I thought you would like this New 2024 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium for $53120 on Autotrader atcm.co/S2PVDP/2AD3616F. I think all Limited are full time 4x4, like my GX470. But the SR5 may come as 4x2
I wish Toyota and Nissan could put some decent wheels on their trucks. It's a design. It doesnt take more money to make a good design.
I’m with you on that. Tundra wheels I can live with, but none of the Tacoma wheels look good. In fact, they are quite terrible. Except for the TRD edition ones that you get aftermarket. And Nissan wheels are quite boring.
Thanks for the video. I bought a poor condition '07 Pathfinder for $500 and the right side exhaust is clogged. I narrowed it down to the right side secondary cat with a pressure gauge threaded into the O2 sensor holes. When I took out the secondary cat it looks somewhat normal except for a lot of gray powder. I can see with my flashlight that the primary cat is hollowed out like yours. I don't think the PO did it because he was clueless about car stuff. Maybe it disintegrated on it's own and then clogged the downstream cat? Anyway I'm planning to replace both but I'm using cheap Amazon cats because the whole car isn't worth the price of OEM ones. Struggling with the bolts that are under the damn heat shield. They are way, way more rusted than yours and access isn't good. I've only soaked them with penetrating oil so far, hopefully that's enough. Thanks again for the video.
You’re welcome, Alex! I think you may be right, they just disintegrate and turn into dust (primaries and then they clog the downstream secondaries). If your state doesn’t require emissions testing then leave them hollow (straight piped). I was lucky, my truck spent most of its life in CA. Also my bolts were easy to remove, so I suspect someone was there not too long before I bought the truck. You’re right about the cost. I bought mine for $2,800 and the parts and labor to replace cats was $2,600, lol. Still to me it was worth it as I did I it for half price by DIYing it. Let me know how it goes with Amazon cats, I’ve heard there may be some fitment issues and some finagling maybe required. Good luck. It’s a big job!
@@MaximumDIYGarage It came off easily! Luckily the rusted bolts came off without any drama. My county in Nevada doesn't require emission testing but the neighboring one does and I'm going to make it pass so that it's more sellable. I probably could have gotten away with a hollowed out secondary cat but I'd already ordered it because that is where the clog was, so I might as well install it now. I'm retired and like fixing things in the garage so that's why I bough this turd, to give me something to work on.
Yes, and secondary cats are not as expensive as primaries
Where did you get the replacement cats from? And part number please. About how long did this job take? Did you have to remove the front tires, and wheel well covers for access? I have an 06 pathfinder and am popping these codes. Great video, one of the best I've found for this process. Awesome job, Thank you
Hi! I bought the cats from a Nissan Dealer parts department (had to drive 140 miles round trip) as they ran a special if I turned in the old cats and would have saved $1000. But it turned out my old cats were hollowed out by PO, so I could not turn them in. So it was $1,500. You May need to verify your part # with your dealer parts dept giving them your VIN as you have a Pathfinder. It took me all day to do the job. I did have to remove the wheel liners and had the truck jacked up in the front with tires off. I hope this helps. Good luck!
@@MaximumDIYGarage Thank you for the quick response, greatly unexpected. 1500 for both cats still seems pretty reasonable. You didn't show if you replaced the secondary cats, did you just reinstall the original back in? It kinda makes sense, since the O2 sensors are before and after the primary cats. Did you clean the secondary cats with any solvents, or nah?? Thanks again.
Nice vid. Decided to go with the Frontier SV for 37k.. don’t want to mess with these new turbo engines! Plus had a few more features included for less money. Maybe back to tacos in a few years when the tech/fuel economy has improved!
Nice choice, Jack! I’ve done another one like this but on Frontiers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paBsyMqaobLMfJc.htmlsi=tuI5hUMXFXkwWXNG
I can handle paying $40,000
For a RAV4 or a Tacoma?
@@MaximumDIYGarage Tacoma. Don't need 4wd where I'm at and don't need options.
The new tundra is someone's wet dream. Made in Mexico... no thanks. 😅
😂
Everyone one wants more power… have u seen how many ppl has meet their creator cause they want more power… exactly… we dont need crazy ppl on the roads with power that they can’t handle
You’re not wrong, however, if you have driven the old 4Runner on the on-ramp merging in the highway, you’d know what I mean that it needs a bit more power.
Too much rust for my taste. Nice video.
Agreed! Thank you for watching!!!
That thing looks rough imo haha. I dont think the xterra springs are different. Im pretty sure theyre the same across the board but there were different tire sizes for different trims. Apple carplay? I just added that to mine! Stay tuned for that video 😉
Thanks Moe!
Testing waters... off road I see )) nice
Haha, thanks, Stan! Not really off road, but off pavement for sure! Was visiting my friend’s farm to get some free-range organic chicken eggs 🥚
@@MaximumDIYGarage OOOO nice !!! lucky you ! can I visit your friend too for some of those eggs ?! they must be so much better then store ones
@@DIY_AUTO_PHOTO yes they are! The yolks are orange (not pale yellow) and they make a nice dome when sunny side up instead of being flat and leaky. The best! You are welcome to come visit Northern Illinois any time, buddy!!!
@@MaximumDIYGarage nice! its the best thing to do is to have your own chickens ! that would be some long but nice trip over 850 miles to cover if going straight there or over 1000 if i make some stops to visit some cities along the way lol
what exhaust?
Stock exhaust with passenger side secondary cat hollowed out by previous owner 😂
Crazy
No not true, it's higher
Ok, it’s $39,044. Did you see the window sticker? Zambroni or whatever they call it? Still, the point is the car is so ridiculously overpriced, it’s sad, but has a “sold” sticker on it and is the only one on the lot of its kind/trim. Good times…
No not true
How soon after applying can I turn on the vehicle?
Right away! There’s no need to wait for it to dry
Sick!
Thanks Moe!
Put the wheel nuts on to prevent thread damage and smack on it with a short handled sledge hammer going around in a circle. I have never damaged a rotor in 50 years of pulling wrenches. I guess I should clarify. You don’t hit the friction surface of the rotor you hit in between the studs and wheel nuts should be threaded so the stud is not protruding through the outside of the nut. If that does not work apply heat evenly around the rotor mounting surface avoiding direct heat to the studs . A propane torch with MAP gas is cheap and works great. ( Plumbers torch)
Great tip! Thank you!
good way to fuck up the threads in the spindle
If you paid attention, the bolt I’m using is smaller and not touching the spindle threads. With this kind of attitude one may argue that whaling on a rotor hat with a 4lb mallet can muck up the studs too. Care and precision is needed in both methods.
wasting time... upgrade the rubber to a 4pound , 1 good blow with it and jobs done...
I was afraid to mess up the threads on wheel studs….
Rubber mallet, lol.
Yes sir. Also tried regular hammer on the rotor hat, but no luck either.
@@MaximumDIYGarage Sorry bud, veteran salt belt tech, rubber mallets gather dust here, I reach for a Witon Bash sledge, after I drill out the retaining screws that are invariably seized / stripped out. The method you used can also be applied to the hub assembly, knock out a lug stud, and use the nut and bolt against the knuckle. Still a good tip, though.
Thank you for an excellent tip, James! Not a mechanic, just a DIY guy here.
@@MaximumDIYGarage Any time, my freind !
Did you try heat and a ball pean hammer to the rotor hub face? Also grey grease all the wheel bearing faces because i live where the salt is.
No, I do not have a ball pen hammer, but tried to hit the hat with a regular hammer with no luck. Yes, I’ve put grease in the metal to metal contact points when reassembling everything. Thanks!
@ 20:30 you mention there is a little oil in the well of the spark plug. Did you have to clean out the oil before inserting the new spark plug?
Yes, it is a good idea to wrap a shop towel or a rag around a long screwdriver and gently clean up the oil at the bottom of the spark plug well.
@@MaximumDIYGarage Completed 2 valve cover replacement and various hoses, great video. Thanks!
@@the.rested good job! Glad you found my experience helpful!
🎉
Marring the back side of the rotor
Not exactly, it goes up against the back side of the hat, not the rotor surface

I’d keep it like that sounds badass
Thanks! I ended up replacing the primary cats and found out the OG ones were hollowed out, so it sounded rough. The idle sounds normal now. Thank you for watching and commenting! Glad it was helpful! Means a lot!
I call this approach: Gentle Force 😊
Yes sir! After pounding on the rotor hat, as most commenters here suggest with a real hammer and pounding on the back of the rotor with a rubber mallet for 30 minutes without success, a I’ve tried “gentle force” method and it worked like a charm in 10 seconds!!! Bam!
Hit the hat of the rotor with a hammer a real Hammer one made out of metal. Take that rubber mallet and go put it with the paint can closing tools. This method you're describing is a good way to break off the caliper mount cast iron isn't the strongest material
I haven’t considered that. Thank you!!!

You’re welcome, Chris!
Thats pretty smart. Nice 👍
Thank you, buddy!
What should I consider covering in order to do this job at home?
What year, make and model is your car? Most modern cars do not require much covering, but the alternator. Just be mindful of electrical Components and do not use a pressure washer, just a gentle spray that may mimic hitting a water puddle on the street. That little water won’t hurt anything.
Mabye if you used a hammer instead of a rubber mallet
And ruined the rotor?
Use a real hammer, not a rubber mallet
I’m too chicken to mess up the threads or the rotor. This is easy. No pounding required. The neighbors would never know you’re doing g wheel bearings at 2am, 😂
Smart
Might want to hit it with an actual hammer next time
10 Hp at the wheels would be nuts.
I know! I certainly didn’t feel any difference in power. Perhaps, they should have reformulated their statement to “if you do this maintenance regularly, it may prevent your car from losing up to 10hp?”, but that doesn’t sound and good as gaining power. 😂
As a professional detailer, this is the best kit ever. IT. WORKS GREAT
