This is actually a George Harrison (R.I.P.) song. His son, Dhani, is the young kid behind Tom Petty (blond mop hairdo). This was the induction of George Harrison into the Songwriters Hall of Fame(?) They were playing a tribute to him. Rumor has it that Prince had a point to prove bc Rolling Stone(?) magazine has just released their list of Top 100 Guitar Players in the World and he wasn't on it. He knew that the music industry was going to be in the room that night. He was intent on showing them why he not only should be on that list, but should be at or near the top of that list.

The way I heard it (and I'm not doubting your version!) was Petty had read the article and told Prince about it. Prince and Tom Petty were good friends. He then handed Prince a guitar and told him "go slay them." It just showed the ignorance of that magazine.

Facts! Also need to mention that George Harrison’s wife wanted only friends of her husband for this tribute not Prince! Every musician on that stage is a legend in their own right! From Tom Petty to British drummer Steve Ferrone which at one time or another recorded and tour with the late Beetle George Harrison! This Concert was amazing and should always cherished as we lost Prince and Petty!🙏😔

For the casual viewer maybe just bumping into this, this song for a start was written by The Beatles’ GEORGE HARRISON. The whole reason for this performance is that GH was being posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist/songwriter/musician (this is 2004), he’d already been inducted years earlier as a member of The Beatles. The bearded singer is ELO’s Jeff Lynne. The young guitarist behind and slightly to the left of Tom Petty is DHANI HARRISON (George’s boy and the spitting image of him) 😊

  • @Mlaprades

He then volunteered to do this song with 4 guitarists from the top 100 list. He was only to do a 16 bar solo but he was pissed & did the rest of the song as a FU to billboard.

Well, Prince WAS invited to perform on the song with the others and during practice, Marc Mann, the lead guitarist of Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra and a guitar instructor nowadays, was hogging all the guitar solo time. Prince was assured that they would give him the closing solo and they were having some sound issues anyway, so Prince went off to practice on his own. What he came back with was all done by him in probably a day's time and is now considered one of the best guitar solos of all time.

I understand that people below the age of 35 believe that Bruno Mars is the equivalent of Prince back in the day. In a world where there are very few talented people I’m sure Bruno is considered something special. But please, Prince not only knew how to play every instrument, but played them to a professional standard whereby he would direct amazing musicians on how to play their instrument to a higher level. Prince had the ability to virtually walk into any band and play any instrument if he wanted to, that was how much talent he had. He possessed the respect, envy and attention of every artist during his life time...

Rolling Stone put a list out of best guitarist and Prince wasn't on the list and he was rightfully pissed off about. This is a tribute to George Harrison Prince was being honored as well. He asked to be part of it. In rehearsals that was not how he performed it. Every one was surprised by it. In an interview Tom Petty was asked how he felt about it. He's Prince how could anyone be mad at that🤣🤣 It is obvious how great of a guitarist he is was a fantastic performance but it was anything but humble 🤣 He basically did a mic drop at the end and walked off. Totally stole the show and I love it.

At rehearsal he didn't get a chance to play because the other guy kept playing the solos and Prince left and told the Producer he would do the last solo and not to worry. I'm fortunate to see Prince perform live and Bruno is no Prince (sorry). This was a George Harrison tribute with his son Dhani on guitar... and it was Dhani who nodded for Prince to come center stage. However, the real story was some of the other musicians did not want Prince to rehearse with them until Tom Petty intervened. Prince supposedly told Tom to give him time at the end and DID NOT rehearse with them. Notice the connection between those three dudes and nobody else on stage. Also, Prince was putting up his middle finger at Billboard who ranked him too low.

I only wish Tom Petty and Prince lived long enough to collaborate. Rewatch they had a moment on stage and it was magical. Short time later in similar fashion they both pass. Imagine Jeff Lynn, Bruce Hornsby, Tom Petty and Prince. Not a super group that is an Atomic Group every top of their game people would want to be a part of. All having to a third of the normal load and showing off when they wanted too.

The easiest thing for Dhjani, George's son to have done was to ask Eric Clapton to play the tribute for his father George Harrison, he was there in the audience, but then Jeff Lynne's guy wouldn't have gotten his few seconds to shine trying hard to replicate what Clapton did on the original recording, an NO ONE would be talking about this performance, it would have been put in the dust bin with all of the other Rock Hall Tributes, but Dhjani wanted his musician to do it, Prince because he KNEW Prince would be Prince and do something ICONIC so no one would forget this performance and Prince did just that and shut up a lot of people in the process who had NO IDEA how brilliant a guitar player he is. You watch this and you see the only person Prince was concerned with on that stage was Tom Petty, that was who he was physically playing to, he respected Tom and Tom, encouraged him, with just looks, when Prince was gonna stop playing Tom looked at him like you started this, now finish it you didn't stay for the rehearsal. LOL This will be talked about and studied FOREVER because Prince was Prince and on that stage.. 2 Reply

It's not a John Lennon song it's a George Harrison song. His son is on the stage behind Prince. He's just amazing that he could play 47 instruments , and I mean game of basketball, And the big question that people ask is where the hell did the guitar go in the end?

Never doubt the greatness of steve Winwood! He could of shredded it up note for note with prince on the guitar! He was supposed to go last and prove his point, the rolling stones magazine just put out thier top 100 guitarist list and left prince off it. Prince basically gave rolling stones magazine and that writer the middle finger it was epic. But Steve chose to keep the solo he played to the original that Clapton recorded out of respect. So lets not disrespect Steve as if he couldn't do that. Great reaction to a great song guys!

Nobody wanted him there , from the guys on stage to George Harrison’s widow , they knew he would turn it out. The only one that had the idea to have Prince play in this band was the promoter. He called Prince and asked him to perform and Prince agreed , since Prince wasn’t familiar with the song the promoter had a copy sent to his hotel room. His practice with the band was minimal as well. He assured everyone that things would go fine and as you see they did. The crowd contained people that had voted him at some crazy stupid number on Rolling Stone’s all time guitarist list ( #33 I believe ) that was the reason for his lil extra flash on the solo and especially the exit.

The story behind Prince being last and all that is what you need to look into. Rolling Stone Magazine did Prince mad dirty so this was his payback. They left him off the 100 greatest guitarists of all time list 🤦🏽‍♂️ After the other guys saw that they planned this whole thing out to let Prince show em whatsup
