Prince didn't even get to rehearse with the rest of the musicians on stage. When he showed up for a rehearsal, the guy who did the first solo kept doing all the solos in the song while Prince watched and strummed along. The producer got pissed and told Petty to talk to him so that Prince could rehearse his solo as well. Prince told the producer "don't worry about it" and said he'd do the solo at the end, and left. So nobody knew what he was gonna do when his solo starts. That's one reason Petty kept giving Prince the sign to keep going, he said you could tell "something special" was happening on stage.

I think a lot of people miss that subtlety in the performance. To think about Prince, used to being the bandleader and doing whatever he wants, checking with Petty to find out just how much space he could take. And Petty, being able to read the band’s performance with someone they hadn’t rehearsed with, knowing how much space to give to make it special without being overdone. 👏

There's even more to the story. A week or so before this show Rolling Stone magazine ran a piece saying that Prince was overrated as a guitar player. No one on stage knew that prince was going to go off the way he did except Harrisons son. This solo was a big FU to Rolling Stone Mag.

Lol the guy that played the other guitar solo is a legend as well. He played his note for note the way Clapton played it in the original, he could of shredded it up like prince did. They gave prince the last spot so he could give rolling stones magazine the middle finger and it was epic! But let's not disrespect the other legends on the stage.

This is a “once in a lifetime” performance! We’re blessed to have it recorded! I liken Prince to a modern version of Mozart. The similarities are many. What isn’t mentioned is that this took place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where earlier in the night, Prince had been inducted! An absolute prodigy, Prince was a virtuoso guitarist who could’ve played lead for almost any band in the world. Also noteworthy, is the fact that Tom Petty and George Harrison were the best of friends. As well as Jeff Lynn was another member of their close knit circle. They’re families were intertwined, which leads to another point. The young man playing acoustic guitar during this performance, isn’t just another artist. He’s actually Dhanni Harrison, son of the great George Harrison! So this truly was a very special performance! Sadly, not long after, we lost both Prince and Tom Petty. Gods Speed. RIP

Both George Harrison & Prince were both being inducted in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame that year (2004) That is why Prince was given a solo. It was planed but not planed. Yes is was unrehearsed. Prince itinerary was crazy. He was was, being inducted, he just came out with musicology album, was starting his tour & was doing a lot of promoting. The producers of that event & some of the musicians thought he was being shady. Prince has worked hard to be the musician he became. That man was hard working 24/7 Yeah that’s George Harrison son Dhani Harrison. He ran back stage after the performance to shake Prince’s hand & tell him he did a awesome job on his Dads song. I see George Harrison personality rub off on his kid in a good way👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Even when Prince is playing his solo, he still makes sure that when the vocals come in, they always have room. A guitar wizard, and a brilliant team player.

Awesome Tribute by all musicians. I love how George's son reacts when Prince starts to play. The young man light up. Thats was great! I love how Prince kept to form being himself, the awesome entertainer and performer and didnt try to be anyone other than Prince. They got a standing ovation after the song was over. Tom Petty loved Prince's performance - you can see him smile when Prince was performing. I guess its easy to forget many of these musicians are friends. It was a great tribute not a memorial service. Prince put his heart and soul into this tribute. Winwood told him twice during this tribute to keep playing even when Winwood was suppose to take over. Bravo to all involved!!!

You can hear Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison singing alongside Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan in their supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys. Check out their songs "End of the Line" and "Handle with Care." As for Prince, the guy was the complete package and a musical genius. There are several songs that showcase his guitar-playing abilities, including "Purple Rain," "Let's Go Crazy," and the obscure "Peach." I had the privilege of seeing him perform live, during his Musicology tour. He wailed on guitar, then proceeded to rock out on bass, drums, and keyboard. That was easily one of my favorite concerts that I've attended..

Prince has been known many times to have a bodyguard type guy who stands next to the stage to catch him, also that guitar that got thrown up in the air, no one on stage or in the audience ever saw it come back down. There’s a mystery for ya.

I was lucky enough to see Prince in concert 5X. If you want to see something AMAZING, watch his Sign o' the times concert. It was just released about a month ago, on You Tube. Even if you are not a Prince fan, just his showmanship will be inspiring. Great reaction video! My deearest Prince, I will miss you until I get to meet you in heaven 💜
