All sound advise. Essentially live below are means in preparation for the retirement we want. Writing plans have been amazing for keeping me accountable; for paying off debt, eliminating mortgage, and paying myself first.

Good advice but when you set income and net worth goals, what do you do when the market inevitably returns an amount different than what you plan? Do you make your goals variable based on returns or plan something fixed and try to find ways to meet them regardless?

That's a really good point Tim! I set my monthly, quarterly and yearly net worth and income goals and make them fixed regardless of what happens in the market. What I mostly track and what matters the most to me is my net worth. For example, last March 2020, the market tanked and my net worth dropped 30% in one month. I never changed my net worth goal for the year and found ways to increase my income by 1) Working more (I was doing more webinars & trying to increase the assets in my company to increase the revenue) + I was also doing more investment research. I never lowered my net worth goal regardless of what happened in the market. I think this helped me stay laser focused on my end goal. I wouldn't recommend lowering your goals because then you think smaller and act smaller. Your brain is very powerful and finds ways to figure it out once you work backwards and set those goals. Sorry for the rant!! I hope this was helpful!

@@SilviaManentFinancialAdvisor Thanks, yeah that's helpful. I was thinking my regular income is pretty fixed except investment income but I could see how allowing the plan to change opens the door for other excuses to not follow and try to meet it whenever something comes up. So I think I agree so long as the idea to make up the difference in a bad market is sound (i.e. not gambling on the latest meme stock to try and recoup losses)
