Mazda has really been slept on over the years. I see tons of these on the road and I think this is their best seller. I think the rest of 2020 will be the year for Mazda sales because their interiors and lighting at night are FIRE!!

Yep the styling is very "Jaguar-like" but fortunately MAZDA'a quality is far above Jaguar. The CX 5 gets Consumer Reports ' "Much Better Than Average", its TOP rating. And ALL Jaguars get CR's "Much Worse Than Average", CR's BOTTOM rating

I am driving this beauty for last couple of months, one feature that no one / no review has mentioned (may be as they do not own the cars or drive for long time) is how Quiet the interior is. With the upgrade package in touring model or GT onwards Bose did a fantastic job of noise cancelling. Even when the windows are open and you are at 45MPH the sound system is just gold. undoubtedly this drives better than any other car in its segment( I drove all of those and RAV4 is just horrible!!! Before buying this one).

Great vid, you guys. The flat tire was making me nervous, so I'm glad you got that figured out before taking it on the road. BTW, I think more car reviewers should review the lower trim vehicles as well. While it's nice to see the Signatures and the Grand Touring Reserves, I'd also like to see the Sport and Touring models. No one ever reviews those, so seeing the NA engine in this review was very helpful. I'm a huge Mazda fan, but my pockets are only so deep lol.

I took the 2020 Rav4 Hybrid out today, base model SE I believe and one thing that stood out to me is that the Rav 4 road noise is bad(would love it if you guys did a decibel test on the Rav 4). It reminds me of my wifes 2015 Fiat 500. A visual comparison of the Rav 4 vs the Mazda CX 5, is like comparing apples to oranges. The Mazda CX 5 interior is luxurious. It looks like no expense spared. Then there is the Rav 4 which pales in comparison. I hate to say that because I had initially set my mind on the Rav 4 after my test drive. The exterior looks great too, but so does the Mazda. All in all, a tough choice to be made on my next purchase.

I have a 2019 CX 5 Grand Touring Reserve (shown here), the 2nd model from the top with the 2.5 turbo. It has all the features of the Signature model except 360 deg. camera, interior real wood trim, interior footlights and parking sensors (but no self parking). For the $2,000. "upcharge" I felt that I could forego these features. I wish I had the paddle shifters of the 202 model but I'm not crying over it. Interestingly, by adding 4 gallons of 100 octane "racing gas" to a tank of 91 octane "premium" gas REALLY lights up this engine by at least another 10 horsepower. That MAZDA's computer and knock sensor can accommodate this octane increase to give more power is just icing on this "cake" of a car.

1 second ago I had a 2017 Honda CRV Touring that I liked - until I found out about the oil dilution situation (and realized I had cvt). I traded it in on a 2020 CX5 Signature and am very happy . The 6 speed auto in this car GOES. The cvt in the Honda seemed "asleep" only to awaken after 2-3 seconds. And, I also received a letter that the 2017year Honda (and the 2018) are involved in a class action lawsuit. If you look in the "Consumers' Report " car buying guide, those 2 years are not even rated - just blank where numbers should be. Also, apparently a major recall (3 M ?) in China. Supposedly, there is a fix (it is worse in cold climates and folks in Northern states supposedly got "the fix") but folks say it often made no difference. You do get an extra year of warranty, but my driving mileage would not make that much of a factor. I was "scared off" and made what I feel was a very good decision. Both models were (are) "loaded". What I mainly lost from the Honda was the kick-under-the-rear-bumper opening liftback. But, on the Mazda, I got heated steering wheel, nicer interior, MUCH better acceleration (so what if I lose 1-2 mpg ?), and a Bose sub-woofer in the spare time center under the rear cargo area, power folding and heated mirrors, and heated (front/rear) seats with cooled front seats. Get one.

Well ONE upgrade MAZDA should include is an OIL CATCH CAN, at least for their top turbo models. I had to have a Cork Sport OCC installed on my 2019 GT Reserve. This greatly reduces carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves. Even so at 30,000 mile intervals I'll have them cleaned with the BG cleaner system available at my dealer. HINT: If you can find it in your area try a 1/2 tank of 100 octane "racing gas". (Usually US $8.00/gallon) WOW! This really wakes up the engine.

@@JJustinXu I hate the new Rav4s. They shift hard, they have problems in the engines, they seem to not be able to make them right, the designing is a complete disaster, plastic garbage everywhere. The CX-5 has more cabin space, feels luxurious and upscale, it's just a nice place to be. Horsepower is nothing if you have a car that cant handle it right. I've already rode inside of a Hybird 2019 RAV4, and I didnt like it. Everytime I moved around my elbow would keep banging on the hard plastic behind the seatbelts that for whatever reason Toyota decided was a good thing to put there. It's so uncomfortable. I'd pick the CX-5 over any other Japanese CUV any day. Keep in mind that all those features you listed on the RAV4 are all on the CX-5 too. Not a huge Toyota fan, and never was.

@T R if the hybrids are Toyota's most reliable models, then that's saying a lot. These hybrids cant even go 10 years without spending at least 8k in repairs. I will stay clear from Toyota until they make dramatic changes to their cars. Mazda is coming out with a hybrid around 2021, but it may not be sold in America until later after that date. I feel like they're trying to make their cars feel premium, but they cant seem to get it right. And eCVT is probably actually worse than regular CVTs, at least in Toyota's case because they're more electronic and they're ran by computers. I really feel like Toyotas arent even worth it anymore over other manufacturers, like they used to. If you bought a Toyota over a Mazda back in the day, then you'd be saving thousands of dollars, but now Toyotas are worse and Mazda is getting better and better. And 39 miles of range? So 39 miles and you have to recharge or else you cant go? That is extremely terrible and I doubt anyone will buy it. People drive more than 39 miles when running errands.

I did purchase a genuine Mazda Nav SD from Amazon for 55.00 usd. The dealer wants 300 - 400 usd. One other feature most overlooked is the rear seats have an adjustment that allows the them to be "slightly" reclined thus giving rear seat passengers a little more room. Not leg room, just upper body.

I've been shopping this segment intensively and made a decision. The luxury compact SUVs from the Germans start around $50k and go up from there. That's too expensive for this class of vehicle and post-warranty all the German stuff is unreliable, meaning you've got to sign up for a new one every three years and you'll get peanuts for your trade-in. (Take my word for it -- I'm trading in a well-maintained 2013 BMW X1 and getting $7k.) The lower-priced offerings from Toyota and Honda are better value but their styling is garish and their driving experience is ho-hum. The sweet spot in this segment is the car reviewed here -- Mazda's CX5: in particular the up-model Grand Touring Reserve. The GTR gets you the turbo engine, a must-have for this model because its normally aspirated engine is underpowered and endlessly frustrating to drive. Also with the GTR, for around $36k you get AWD and a wealth of standard features that give BMW's X3 and its Mercedes/Audi counterparts a run for their money. The GTR's tasteful interior with leather and high-quality vinyl, along with excellent seats and a quality feel to the controls, have more in common with the luxury German models than its Japanese competition. In my opinion the Mazda is the best looking of all the compact SUVs and according to Consumer Reports, Mazda's build quality and reliability are second to none. And Mazda make this car very easy to buy. Consider: Right now (June 2020) Mazda are offering 60 months with NO interest and no payments for the first three months. And after it's paid for you'll get an additional five years or so of trouble-free driving. The CX5 at this trim level continues to set the standard for this class. There are no trade-offs or compromises -- at an economy price you get a first-class driving experience. It's cheap to run (it will even accept regular gas at a small drop-off in power) and will retain its residual value far longer than the competition. No wonder it's the best-selling compact SUV in the country. I'm getting mine in a new color offering: Machine Gray Metallic. Even though I'm a cheapskate, the CX5 looks so fantastic in this color I'm willing to pay an extra $300 for it.

Heated seats, power lift gate and moonroof, upgraded BOSE, Homelink built-in garage door opener, 19” tires, leatherette interior, navigation, rain sensing wipers and the entire ActivSense suite. That’s pretty well equipped! Other than HUD and a power front passenger seat I would add nothing else as it has everything for me. Touring trim is 1 trim up from base. The beauty of Mazda products is that they all drive much the same irrespective of trim. Trim just dictates level of creature comforts. And no you don’t need turbo to have a good time. My CX5 will easily do 100+ miles/hour and it doesn’t take that long to get there.

It's going to be all about priorities there. Driving dynamics and luxurious cabin go to the CX-5, but fuel economy and technology is going to be much better in the RAV4

@@CarConfections I really like the CX5 more but the back end is a little small. I did like the Rav4 on my test drive yesterday... I drive a Ford Edge now and it has been a great car. I may try a 2020 Edge before deciding... I've ruled out the CRV (it's a guy thing). Then there is the 35K Tesla 3.. Hmmm.. It's down to those. My wife and I down-sized so we have a small-ish 2-car garage. Width is a issue and these will fit. The Edge is the biggest of all these... Decisions.

You really cant go wrong with a top of the line Mazda. I hate the RAV4 ride, when I rode in it for the first time it seemed fine, but once you start getting familiar with it you start feeling roughness you'd really hate. Transmission shifts really hard, it doesnt handle all that well, and I'm not a huge fan of the buzzing engine noise of the Hybrid RAV4. If you think the Hybrid will be a smooth ride, think again. The RAV4 isnt so much of an eye candy either. There's hard, cheap plastic crap everywhere you look in the car. In the rear, everytime I moved around, my elbow kept on hitting the plastic behind the seat belt. Not very comfortable. The interior also feels very dated. The electric motor cycle display thingy on the infotainment also seemed to heavily distract me. You'll get so much more for the CX-5 than the RAV4, unless of course if you absolutely need a pano sunroof, wireless charging, and a very tiny bit more space, and are willing to give up driving dynamics, best-in-class styling, ride quality, luxury, way better safety, as well as a bit more reliability, since the new RAV4s have already had so many recalls, and it hasn't even been a year yet since they've released these cars. And I dont think they'll actually be able to fix these problems for another 3-5 years, as they need to create a whole new design for basically everything, and test it too. Theres a reason why the only Toyota that hasn't been recalled so far is the iA. Go for the Mazda. Unless you're a huge Toyota addict like Scotty Kilmer, you'll be very satisfied with the CX-5. I'd suggest getting a turbo rather than the standard engine though.

Mazda styling is right up there with the best but, as was the case with my RX8, in 2004, none of the super brochures photos showed it with registration plates, and this wasn't even considered in the design of the front! This is another such example where there is nowhere to fit a plate without ruining the look.... In the UK, our registration plates must be one of the worlds ugliest, and currently consist of 7 huge characters on a white ground, for the front! I bought a private plate with 'A17 RXB' to minimise the travesty (the 17 read as a large lower case "n")......An RX8

The CX-5 is a quiet, refined drive. That being said the front seat bottoms don’t offer any thigh support, the arm rest is too far back, the dead pedal is too far forward and the steering wheel doesn’t pull out far enough. In addition the A pillar is too thick and it’s hard to see around. If you are 6ft tall or above, don’t buy this car. The driving position is flawed.
