I recently bought CX-5 GTR and I love it, I am big fan of Toyota and this is my first Mazda. My reason for Mazda : (1) 250hp and 310 tq. and you get same torque with regular gas and low RPM which is really impressive (2) peddle shiftier (3) look and drive quality

A lot of people don’t realize how devastating to leg room rear facing and bulky child seats can be. Thanks for covering that!

I have a 2019 GTP and love it. I like the way it handles and the size fits my needs perfectly. This is my 5th Mazda and likely won’t be my last!!!

Here are a few of my gripes from personal experience. The media center is SLOW when you first turn on the car. If you play some video from your phone over bluetooth, there is noticeable delay in the sound vs the video on your phone ( of course this is while you're the passenger). The rear view camera resolution is grainy too. There is no remote start option, you can only add it later, the wheels feel too narrow cornering fast. In my opinion, some wider wheels would have made it more manageable during fast corners. Overall we love this car don't get me wrong, it's a hell of a bang for your buck. We looked at even the RAV4 and this was by far the best bang, you get all the options for $36-38k whereas with the RAV4 it will easily go into the $40k's with all the options plus the Mazda is way more luxurious and fun. Honestly, if you're looking buy a CX-5, get the Reserve or Signature (if you can afford it), it's so much fun to the point I tend to use more than my wife does lol. The regular one is too sluggish and might as well get the RAV4 if you want boring.

Thanks for the great & thorough review! I bought my 2020 GTR today & am so stoked that I did my research & found this baby!! I've been a die-hard BMW fan forever & was leaning toward the X3 or Audi Q5. But in the end I just couldn't justify paying their prices when this car has everything I wanted. I love the stiffer driving feel (steering wheel), feeling so connected to the road & the fun driving experience. And it's much quieter and a smoother drive than my 328i sport that I just traded in. And ventilated seats for this girl living in deathly hot Arizona right now is a huge bonus. Run & check out this crossover ASAP!

I like the paddle shifters but they need brushed aluminum covers. "Soul Crystal Red" is what US hot rodders call "Candy Apple Red". HINT: ALI Express sells a lot of VERY nice trim pieces for the new CX 5. For my 2019 CX 5 GT Reserve 2.5 L. Turbo, AWD I got a brushed stainless 3 pedal set W/ rubber inserts, brushed chrome covers for the seat controls, glove box handle and door handle surrounds. Also polished stainless exhaust tip extensions. Yes, it's all Chinese made and you wait at least a month for delivery but it is all good quality and very inexpensive for that quality. I also got two hood gas struts from them to replace my "low rent" prop rod. Looks and works great. That's all the "bling" I'm getting. Look at the HKS exhaust system. Better than the Cork Sport B/C it actually increases the power IF you upgrade the air intake filter with a K&N. I may get it. Cork Sport does have the best intercooler & pipe replacement kit made. Great quality and design and more power, natch.

Thanks for your review! Regarding the feel of the wheel: I do prefer a heavier steer. I currently drive a 2009 Eclipse (which I love) and it definitely has that more direct feel which I like. I have driven other cars where the wheel feels too easy to turn and too disconnected, and I don’t like it at all. Driver’s preference of course, but glad to hear this as I haven’t test driven one yet. If / when I decide to part with my Eclipse, I will be considering this or the Mazda 3. Thanks for this review Nolan. When the lease is up on the Grand Cherokee, this along with the 6 Signature and Buick Regal GS is on my short list. Really wish Mazda would invest in a new trans that didn't require the torque management they currently use. I drove a 2019 Mazda 6 Signature which had the 2.5t and found it to be somewhat diesel like. Very soft off the line until it gets into second or third gear. Now, with that being said, the 2.5t and six speed are very rewarding in passing maneuvers and climbing hills. That torque out on the road is abundant, allowing the trans to stay in it's top gear nearly all the time. Sorry for the lengthy input... LOL

Mazda desperately needs to update it to the new platform that the cx-30 and Mazda 3 has as the infotainment system in the cx-5 is really starting to show it's age. It would be nice as well of they changed the door handle and deleted the physical unlock button and made it touch sensitive like the Mazda 3 and cx-30.

Next month I'm going to buy this lovely bird🙈

Not to forget the Signature has bigger front discs and the 2 pot calipers both are bigger than the lower models....!

I've got one and the reviewer is mostly on point but he is vague on the naming of the trim levels. From lowest price to highest you've got Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. You're going to want the turbo so that restricts you to the top two. For $2k more than the Grand Touring Reserve, all the Signature gives you is brown leather seats, and a 360-degree camera. Not worth the extra dough. And now for the good news: the Grand Touring Reserve comes absolutely loaded with features for only $35,000, and it is so well designed and built, it will give the compact luxury SUVs -- BMW X3, AUDI Q5, Mercedes GLC class -- a good run for their money, and their base price is several thousand more than the CX-5. Moreover, German cars and SUVs take a huge depreciation drop after their warranties expire, and this is because of their well-known lack of long-term reliability. Mazdas, as verified by Consumer Reports, are at the very top of the list of the most reliable cars sold in America. You can gauge by this review the CX-5's many virtues, but to appreciate how it radiates quality, you need to drive it. And before you do that, behold it in person. In a market cluttered by overstyled SUVs, the CX-5's lines are refreshingly simple and understated. (Its best color is not Soul Red as shown here, but recently introduced Machine Gray Metallic.) This dark monochrome without cosmetic gimmickry just radiates class. This is a big machine but drive it and it seems to shrink around you. Small touches like the oversized door mirrors show the engineers' dedication to the driving experience. The reviewer calls the ride stiff but I think "firm" is more accurate. Shock damping is set up so it absorbs the bumps but at the same time does not wallow in corners and on uneven pavement as do softly-sprung vehicles that are focused on a "luxury" ride. The turbo provides all the power you need, and the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system not only adds traction, it improves handling response in corners. The active driving controls, as demonstrated, take the misery out of freeway commutes by doing 90 percent of the braking, accelerating, and steering for you, leaving you to take calls wirelessly through the CarPlay/Android technology built into the infotainment system. If like me you've been shopping for a compact SUV, I urge you to give the Mazda a chance. There are more expensive SUVs to be had, but nothing out of Japan or Germany beats out the Grand Touring Reserve trim level of the CX-5 for build quality, engineering, and driving experience.

Any thoughts on the long term reliability of the turbo version of the engine compared to the naturally aspirated? NA has a much longer track record vs the turbo only being around since 2019. Especially for those planning on keeping the car for the duration of its lifespan.

The Turbo version has been around for a few years already overseas, we JUST now got it in the US. It's reliable, no worries. Been proven by multiple countries already.

Great car as far as driving and handling, but they need to fix the resolution of the backup camera and modernize the outdated infotainment system before I would consider it.

Excellent review i plan on purchasing mines next week actually. However i have heard alot of bad reviews about the my mazda app and the other mazda app that allows you to turn on the car and unlock and lock and detect the car location. Please do one of the mazda app. Thank yoh so much

Nothing in this class can sprint with the CX5.

My CX-5 has a HUD aka Active Driving display but it shows only the speed. How can I turn on the traffic signs recognition and blind-spot?

On the main radio screen go to settings and then there should be options to change information On The driving display

The best review of the CX-5 I've seen. I wish Mazda would quit with the cylinder deactivation. It has known issues. Also I agree with the soft brake pedal. Never been a fan of Mazda braking systems. Those problems aside it is a beautiful design and overall package.

That's why it would be smart to upgrade to at least the GTR if you're planning on buying one of these. Thank God the turbos don't have cylinder deactivation. I wish they would just do away with the cylinder deactivation, It only saves like half a MPG.

No cyl deactivation on Turbo . If CX5 feels stiffer on your crappy roads just drop to 32PSI and it will be softer.

@@christophers5510 cylinder deactivation is a system some cars like Mazda use to squeeze out just a bit of gas mileage and cut just a tiny bit of emissions. Its beyond me why they use it. If you're not driving very fast, then the car will automatically deactivate 2 of your cylinders, which for one causes uneven wear and tear, and that's why nobody likes it.

This SUV has aged well, but I am excited to see what the all-new model will look like. I think they could come up with some better wheel designs. I think the RAV4 is now the benchmark in this class, what do you think?

I still think this is a very handsome vehicle, a lot of value. Definitely worth a look. However, given the tight quarters, if I had a family, I would like at some of the larger competitors for practicality. Speed would simply have to take a backseat in that matter.

I have been leasing a 2018 CX5 brand new for 15,000 miles and unless the entertainment system has been drastically updated for 2020 it is one of the worst entertainment systems that I've ever has the displeasure of using. And along with other things, It actually keeps the car from being 100% enjoyable! The Japanese really flunked bigtime on these: 1. For one, the entertainment system is slow. Sometimes it takes 20 seconds to turn on. 2. When using Sirius you can't see what the full song or band is because it's cut off half way. Hello! Use the whole damn screen! The screen is a nice size! 3. You have to use a 'dial' to get to higher satellite stations! Good luck scrolling to the sports channels in the 800's! Get back to me in a half hour when you get there. Or maybe add an onscreen key pad when using satellite radio? 4. The navigation functions become locked when driving so basically your passenger can't even check for re routes while you are driving so you have to do something more dangerous than using the navigation screen: pull over onto the side of a 70 mph highway just so you can access the Navigation functions! 5. Not entertainment related, the LED fog lights are a useless joke. They're so dim. Why bother? 6. You can't open the trunk with the engine running AND in park! You have to shut the engine off! An absolute inconvenient waste of time when picking someone up at the airport for a scoop and run! I'm sure there are a few more, but these are the worst.

Wheels look a little smaller in proportion.

Please can you review the VW transporter with all the seats because I might get that but I want a review from a trusty person

For a family of 4/5 it’s got enough space for long road trips , I have been thinking of changing cx5 for something else but any other popular brand with same extras features is almost double the price .

Wait no remote start in the key fob? How can I remote start without the app?

I would get this. The rogue is practical, efficient, and has good space. Depends on what you prefer. The Rogue transmission worries me...bad reputation for reliability but only time will tell

Nissan has a horrible cvt trans

The CX-5 is the most important single model in the Mazda lineup. That's because the sales of virtually every other vehicle is literally in the toilet. The CX-9 ranks dead last among mainstream midsize crossovers not by a small margin. Only 27,000 CX-9's were sold in 2019. In fact, the CX-9 had the unfortunate distinction of being the only mainstream crossover that was outsold by a number of luxury brand midsize SUV's. The Mazda6, a well regarded midsize sedan managed only 21,000 sales in 2019, down 30% from the year before. And in the first quarter of 2020 things were even worse. A drop of 35% compared to 2019 to a dismal 4,000 units sold. The new CX-30 sold relatively well in the first quarter of 2020 (8300 units) but that was balanced by the virtual collapse in sales of the CX-3, down 22% to 2500 units. Mazda3 sales in the first quarter were down 47% compared to a a year before to around 8000. In the midst of this bleak landscape, CX-5 sales of around 154,000 units in 2019 and 35,000 in the first quarter of 2020 are the only bright spots for Mazda. Unfortunately, with the strong and increasing sales of the RAV4, especially the hybrid version and a new hybrid for the CR-V it's doubtful that Mazda can improve their sales position with an aging platform, drive train, and no hybrid. And with the increasing popularity of the sub-compact SUV market the cramped passenger and cargo space of the CX-5 doesn't bode well. Not only is the Mazda challenged to compete with compact SUV's with more interior space, the new KIA Seltos, nearly a foot less in length than the CX-5, offers more overall cargo space (62.8 cf vs 59.6 cf.) Mazda's Koda design language that sacrifices interior space for a long, stylish hood makes for an attractive vehicle but undermines the "U(tility)" in an SUV.

Among sub-compact SUV's it was in 8th place behind (in order) the Chevy Trax, the HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Buick Encore, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Kicks, Ford Escort, and Toyota C-HR. To put that in perspective, the Chevy dealers sold over 28,000 Traxes in that quarter. The Kona outsold the CX-30 by almost 2 to 1. (15,174 units).

Also use a original fast charging capable wire, i was using cheep chines one and it was bad on AA

From certain angles on the roads the CX5 does not look as nice, I don't love it just like it a little maybe not enough to buy.
