The Best SUV No One Buys | Mazda CX-5 OWNER'S LONG TERM Review

Ойын-сауық

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is a lovely compact SUV. This review covers the 2017 - 2021 model years, although styling and features vary between those years. For example, the design was lightly refreshed and Android auto/apple car play was added for 2020.

My opinion on turbos is this. If you are buying it keep for three years then trade it in, get the turbo. They add a lot to the fun factor. If you are a long hauler who plans to just "drive it til the wheels fall off" skip the turbo. In the long haul they are just another source of expensive repairs. As far as they go, Mazda's are less problematic, but the statement still stands.

  • @DanielsTechStudio

I agree. Becomes harder to do though as most brands are removing naturally aspirated options for turbos only

Imo the Turbo engine is the way to go in any case ....they require oil changes more often and airfilters as well ....but if the maintenance is done they will last as long as the standard engine. Mazda designed Turbos are a step above the other manufacturers . Also the Zoom Zoom is so much better that the driving experience is well worth it ..

Hi, just wondering how much you paid for the car. I’m considering getting the same car as yours. I just got a hit and run on my Mazda 3 a month ago and I’m looking for something bigger not not too pricey. I have enjoyed driving a Mazda that’s why I’m looking at another one but bigger

@@richardfake447 Hello! I paid 25K for it. It’s been a great car. Just routine oil changes. I use premium fuel for the turbo (it’s not a requirement) and it’s only $50 to fill up my tank. It drives like a sports car. That turbo is sweet!

@@PamelaDavis2Chicksand1OldLady thanks for the info. I live in California and the same car is asking about 27K now. At least I have some idea as to what's a fair price from the dealership. Thanks again. Same guess with my Mazda 3, only regular oil change and that's about it. Mazdas are really trouble free cars in general and they are great to drive. I was also considering the Lexus NX models too. Lol.

The last thing you said really resonated with me. The most remarkable thing about the car is how it feels so perfectly adequate with that 25% push on the gas pedal. It somehow convinces you that, that is enough and rarely leaves me wanting more. I know it wouldn't give more without a lot of complaint/engine noise, so I really drive the car exactly how it is made to be driven, and it leaves me satisfied most of the time. The 7k upsell for the turbo is available, but I am not the person that will go that route. Also I have never had a car that gives you instant mpg feedback, which also makes it fun to try to eek out as many miles for your gas as possible. PS I have the 2022 Preferred trim, but other than AWD, I don't see much difference between it and your car, which is a good thing.

I had spent 8 months shopping around for a car before I bought 2018 CX-5 GT. I absolutely love the car. If you want to see how well they move, I highly recommend looking up Mazda CX-5 Nurburgring on KZread. Spoiler alert: A 2013 Mazda CX-5 did the lap in 9:22 on a mildly wet track. For comparison, a Ferrari Testarossa did a 9:14 on dry. The CX-5 also destroyed the competition in the Moose test. This test is performed at a minimum 40 mph, and the car heads toward a moose dummy and when it gets there must cut a hard left lane change, followed by a hard right turn after you pass the moose to get back into your lane. Toyota couldn't even qualify at 40 mph, without almost rolling over while the CX-5 managed to do it at 49 mph with a slight drift from the rear wheels. I've always summed up the CX-5 as a car which is not the fastest, nor the best handling, but it will gain high marks in many different tests.

Nice review. I recently bought a 2019 CX-5 Sport AWD for a similar price (21.9k / 31,000k miles) and love it so far. I didn't really need the extras, but I do plan on having the dealership upgrade my infotainment to Mazda Connect (bonus points to Mazda for offering the upgrade on base models). The GTs around here were going for 27k+, so a bit outside of my range. Still get a lot of car out of the Sport.

After test driving a Subaru, Honda and Toyota I went with the 2023 Premium addition because it simply drove better than the others. It was also quieter inside and the interior was better in every way. I’m happy with the six speed transmission, I think they did a software update on it since your year, because personally I like the longer shift points. You are so right about the steering too because you really feel connected to the road. I know the turbo has tons of more power but the additional maintenance on one is why I went with the regular engine because quite honestly I wasn’t looking for a race car but a everyday driver. I plan on taking a long road trip through two states soon so it’s great to hear yours has been so comfortable doing that. Great video by the way.

Just bought my 2024 CX5 Turbo. It’s fast and fun. ( my third Mazda ) The ride is amazing. Interior trim and “ touch feel “ is on the luxury level. I think the seats are comfortable but maybe a little narrow. ( I’m average size , 185 lbs ) Bolting the sub woofer to the spare tire is weird. You need to disconnect the wire and remove the speaker to get at the spare .

I just traded in my 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring 4WD for a 2023 CX-5 Carbon Edition AWD. AWD is standard since 2022. Love the design pretty there are subtle changes from the 2018 model to the 2023, my new car has improved road handling and the doors are more solid. The Sky-active AWD combined with Gvectoring plus make the ride smoother. The Sport Drive gives a kick up in speed, not a turbo lol but gives it a little more power. My Carbon Edition is the only package with the polymetal gray metallic color paint, red leather, black 19" wheels etc. which is a sexy combination. After driving BMWs for 20 years, I love my Mazda and yes, it's a great road trip vehicle. Consumer reports top ranking cars in saftey.

I just bought the 2023 Premium addition and absolutely love it! I totally agree with you about the sport mode being aggressive because I drove a Honda Civic in sport mode and couldn’t tell the difference but Mazda made it so much better though I rarely drive in sport as the regular gets the job done fine. The interior has an almost Lexus feel to it and blows similar compacts away. I’ve yet to drive it in snow though so hopefully it will do well.

Honestly prefer the door unlock button for car washing (handwashing). Capacitive touch sensors on other cars continually lock and unlock when sprayed with water or when you wipe or dry the door handle area. 2024 model update added wireless android auto / Apple CarPlay with a slightly wider display. A nice feature (not advertised) is on the higher trims with HUD. The CarPlay navigation gives turn by turn direction on the HUD. HUD also displays the blind spot monitor. If you have navigation it should also display the speed limit signs Only one feature I think is missing. No pressure display for each individual tire in the TPMS. Very minor detail though. Would have also preferred the older (and smaller) style key Fob though. Even though it doesn’t look as “premium”.

I used to keep a lot of junk in my car that I didn't need. Now I realize the the reason companies like Mazda don't provide a lot of storage is that it breaks up the interior and makes it look busy instead of clean and smooth. Water bottles, packs of gum, shelves, handbags, coins etc. take away from the look. Oh, and when it is time to clean the car, you will have a box full of stuff to remove first. No disagreement here, I just wanted to show another side of the coin so to speak.

Reason: 2.0 litre engine, NO navigation system - otherwise clean and perfect in presentation. Now, in June 2024 it has passed 162 000 km, still running well, never had any problems with it. It has heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, rear usb connectivity, standard size sunroof, heated steering wheel, head up display, adaptive headlights, and safety tech.

How is the comfort level of the driver’s seat? Have you taken it on any trips of several hours or more yet? I REALLY want to get one, but I do A LOT of driving/spend a LOT of time in my car. I’m just concerned about what some CX5 owners have said about uncomfortable seating.

  • @chrisb7507

@@saylorgirl799 comfort level is about 3/5. It has auto adjust and lumbar support but it’s more on the tougher side ( for a lack of better word ) .. I commute 4 hours a day for work with most of it being on the freeway. It’s not the greatest comfortable seating but it isn’t the worst either. You can always adjust it but it’s a small thing that once you get used to it, it’ll be alright.

I don"t know why you"re getting such poor fuel mileage. I drive a mix of city/rural driving 50/50 split and I average 28 mpg in the warmer weather here in Canada. It must be the crappy gas there. I've never had a car that can run on regular gas in the U.S. without it pinging, but no problem here. I don't baby it either as it's a company car. Once a week it gets an Italian tuneup on the freeway at 140 kph, 87 mph, for 150 km, or a little more than 90 miles, and I average 27 mpg. The speed limit here is 100 kph/62 mph so I definitely don't drive it like a senior citizen.

It might be a little tight as the car isn't super wide like a CX90 3 row SUV. Legroom and headroom should be adequate But you'll have to sit in one to confirm. The moon roof does indeed open. The only cars that don't let you open the roof are mainly EVs like Teslas with their full glass roof.
