2020 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk Turbo Off-Road Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we take the new turbo-charged 2020 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk into the Cascade Mountains to see just how well this setup works on rugged Pacific Northwest forest roads. Also it gets compared against the Subaru Crosstrek and it's X-Mode off-road system.
Correction: the Crosstrek has 8.7” of ground clearance.

As a previous subaru owner and current renegade owner, there’s no question for me that the renegade is worlds beyond even subaru’s when it comes to off road prowess. I’ve taken my renegade through texas mud bogs and moab rocks and it has yet to fail me. That being said I have done some modifications but that is another great part about this car is the aftermarket support and the great community!

confettihunterminus1, When I test drove the 2020 renegade, it had severe gas pedal lag (almost half a second). This was especially noticeable when hammered to the floor and then quickly releasing the pedal, only to hear the engine still continuing to rev higher, despite your foot being off the pedal. Is this a common trait with the Renegades? Or did the one I test drive have an out of sync pedal? Just curious, because I never felt this in other drive by wire systems, but this was the only Renegade I have tested, and I would like to buy one maybe this year. The salesman wasn't much help on the topic...lol

Grant Deisig my mom has a compass and I noticed the same thing. But it’s only at the beginning, no big deal. It’s not a speedy car anyways, if you wanna get rid of that you’ll have to get a Cherokee with the v6. 4cyl with that zf trans seems to equal lag off the line.

Luv my trailhawk. I have been off roading in my trailhawk all over the west. The only thing you really need to offroad the trailhawk is offroading knowledge thats all. Know and understand its limitations and its capabilities. Learn about the importance of tire pressure, and the different offroad modes and what they do. Take a jeep offroad driving lesson. Yep Jeep offers offroad driving lessons all over the country. Take one. Lastly get some good all terrain tires, the stock tires are ok for dry unimproved forest roads but when the rocks get sharp and the weather turns for the worse all terrains are going to get you home. Oh and some recovery gear, I have a towstrap, maxx trax, a jack and an air compressor to air up my tires when I get back on asphalt. Thats it thats all you really need to head out into the west and explore.

I think a lot of people forget that while the Crosstrek does have a lot of offroad features and may be a little cheaper it does not have the angles the renegade trailhawk does. I was able to go onto the Jeep website and without adding anything except the winter group, I was able to get an MSRP of a Renegade Trailhawk down to $26,855, with the same 1.3L turbo and automatic. Heated manual cloth/leather seats, a 7” UConnect, no sunroof (less weight and no leaking) and less to break down for FAR less money than what you’ve tested, but the same capability. I would argue that the turbo motor is a lot better choice for this than the old 2.4. The old 2.4 had much less torque much higher in the rev range. While the turbo needs a little speed to spool up, it will still have more torque at Torque Converter stall speeds than the old 2.4, especially at elevation. I think the addition of the Turbo motor is a big reason to buy this new model over the old one.

He tows a lot and carries a lot of weight overlanding. Because of this, I found a 2018 Trailhawk with the 2.4. More towing stability and I saved $15000 over a new one. Win win!!!

I bought this Jeep a couple of days ago, same power train except in Limited trim, and I love this thing! Same color as in the video as well. Reviewers should keep in mind that people that are going to be going for cars like a Renegade or even a cross trek are normal folks that aren’t looking for the vehicle to pull off the line like a... sports. car. It may be a college student looking for something sporty and capable. I’m coming from a 2008 Ford Escape, so really anything is better than what I had. The power is awesome, the power is really there when you need to pass someone on the highway. I’ve gone thru THICK mud and made it out... in a limited trim. I’d recommend this thing forsure! Also, with rebates you can get that $37k down to $30-31 easy, maybe even less. My limited came out to $23k.

I have a 2018 Trailhawk w/2.4L. Ive driven it almost everywhere Ive taken my Polaris RZR, and its handled everything like a champ. The Colorado Rockies roads/trails I frequent are a lot more aggressive than anything in this video. Ive plowed through 2 feet of snow, and crossed streams up to 16” deep. I haven’t modified anything on my “Baby Jeep”, and I don’t intend to. It’s a remarkable little SUV on and off road. I average a combined 27mpg, and its nice to only pay $25 or so to fill it up. It’s not the most powerful vehicle in the world, and you have to plan ahead to pass someone on 2 lane mountain roads. I wouldn’t recommend the Renegade to anyone with more than 2 children over 9 or 10 years old unless your making short trips around town. Honestly, the back seat leg room is lacking. For my girlfriend, my small dog, and I, it’s perfect even on long drives. As far as cost, mine had a sticker price of $31,900.00, but I waited, for sales and discounts. I payed $26,500 including the extended warranty, and a couple other things. If you like the vehicle, wait until you can get serious discounts on it. Full honesty, I love my “Baby Jeep”, and it has some great perks, but it’s not worth the $37,000.00 sticker price they are asking for!!!!

I would be very happy to be able to go where he went with that Renegade. It sounds like he is probably paid by Subaru, it's the only way I can make sense of some of his comments. Looking through the comments I see people have found his errors in trying to make the connection to the 2 vehicles. The video footage of what the Jeep was capable of was amazing.

I got a kick out of your comment “shift by committee.” An apt description of transmission shift performance. I have the same situation with my 2015 Ram Promaster City with the 2.4 TigerShark and 9 speed automatic. All too often there is a one and two count before the movement of the gas peddle is answered by the engine and transmission.

These little Jeeps are awesome. I have a Wrangler JK and my wife has a 2018 Renegade. We have mods on both. These little Jeeps can do way more then what was shown in this video. Renegades have also gotten a Jeep culture all their own. There are tons of Renegade Face Book group pages. renegades are showing up at all the trail rides and holding their own. I have even seen one perform a rescue by pulling out a Toyota FJ. It started out as a joke and then a question of can it do it. IT did. There is a video floating around somewhere. It was at Uwharrie in NC.

If you reverse calculate the break over angle to determine mid vehicle clearance you can figure out that the Subaru Crosstrek is going to be 9.1 in off the ground mid vehicle. The Renegade Trailhawk however, is 11.55 inches off the ground mid vehicle. It has to be to achieve the break over angle that it has of about 25 degrees. You can use wheelbase and breakover angle to find mid vehicle height. What this means is that on the Subaru the suspension arms are more flush with the bottom of the vehicle and on the Renegade they're going to droop down more ... And then that's where that 8.7 in number is coming from is the bottom of the suspension arms which is really almost tire size dependent. So for perspective the Wrangler Rubicon extreme Recon is 12.9 in to the differential with 35 inch tires . To the same place on that Renegade it's going to be about 11.5 inches , maybe 11 in the front. So you're only 2 in lower than a Wrangler with 35s... 200 bucks will probably get you a 2-in lift and bring the center clearance of that Renegade to the same as a Wrangler with 35s... It's crazy stuff but when you do the math you'll be surprised... With just a 2-in lift on my Cherokee Trailhawk and 30.6-in tires I'm beating the breakover angle of a Wrangler Rubicon extreme Recon that has 35 inch tires. With just a simple lift I'm 40° front and rear and then I'm 28° break over. When you put a Cherokee Trailhawk at about the same height as the Wrangler you get almost the same angles actually. You'll get better break over and you'll get almost as good approach and departure.... Kind of surprising but it's true. I'm actually 14 in to my rock sliders with a 2 inch lift and only a half inch lift from the tires... But if you read the spec sheet it's going to say 8.7 in because that's to the suspension arm... And then with the bigger tires it's going to be 9.2... but I'm 14 in to my rock sliders.... Other than the Renegade having better angles and clearance I would agree with you that the Subaru is probably pretty close. Cherokee Trailhawk... No... It will kill a Subaru... No contest.

If I was in charge of that I'd probably go ahead and raise the ground clearance them extra few points to 9 inches. A nice even number. Not sure how much difference that would make offroad. But I doubt it would hurt.Maybe see about another 20 ponies under the hood and something about the low end. Although admittedly you don't really need a particularly fast vehicle for offroad. But you might like the extra pep on the way to the trail,or in your daily driving. A young guy I go to Church with got a Renegade ( I think Latitude trim) to drive to work and back a few years ago. He seems to really like it. I guess it gets good fuel economy and handles bad weather good. If memory serves he said his drive to work was around 45 minutes. He got his wife a Journey. I'm curious as to what they got planned now that they got a 4th kid on the way.

I really liked this review, heading off onto a road that you've never been on and conquering it with no problem. The Trailhawk did a real good job for what it is but I'd still prefer the Subaru. My sister had (emphasis on HAD) one of these Jeeps when they first came out. She needed it for snowy situations because she works at a ski mountain here in Maine and the road up to the mountain is pretty steep, it's paved but steep. It did what she need it to do for about 25k miles and then it died one day. After getting a $2500 wiring harness put in it was fixed, but then wheel bearings started to go and then suspension bushings. She finally got rid of it at four years old with 36k miles on it and she finally listened to me and bought a trouble free Subaru.

As a renegade owner with the turbo, I really think it is just the transmission holding it back. I’ve noticed if you ease into 1st gear instead of slamming the gas, the turbo is peppier and a lot quicker… but that number could be lowered. What’s really important is that torque to pull yourself out of being stuck vs no turbo
