What I have figured out with my Jeep Grand Cherokee is that ROCK mode is more of an OFF ROAD mode. I use it for all types of terrains when I am off the beaten path. Sand mode, Mud mode, and Snow do not allocate power to the wheels with traction well. Rock mode does.

Out of those 3 you mentioned for a pick, I agree. Living in the same state you know all these hills mild to steep are a lousy place to challenge brakes for long periods of time. I much prefer a proper transmission to shift down with to engine brake more than riding the pads.

People are commenting that the Forester is 40k and the Compass is only 32. However a Forester is only 40k if you load it down with all available options. Actually it’s a touch under 40 according to a build I did on the Subaru website. The 32k Compass is the bare bones Trailhawk version. The version Ryan has in this video is the loaded version. So if you compare loaded to loaded Forester to Compass, Subaru wins hands down price wise. Plus more ground clearance and more reliability.

I agree but this Jeep is more capable than what is being implied. It has a Power Takeoff Unit (PTU) , a tried and true transfer case. PTU simply means that it's front wheel drive. A PTU is simply a front wheel drive transfer case. Ryan is right though, It seems to be a bit worse than a standard (RWD) transfer case. But to act like it's overall less capable is just silly. It's a true 4X4. I like the way he's down playing it because it's being marketed towards women.

If you just take traction control off and lock it in 4 and keep a bit more momentum and throttle these things are great and dont usually get stuck on mild offroading situations. And of course better tires.

The tires are such a let down. Anyone who off-roads knows that tires are the most important thing as bad rubber can even bring a wrangler to its knees. With that being said, the course is pretty challenging and it looks like it did great even with the highway slicks. Put some proper rubber on it, one size up for slightly more clearance and I’d bet it would be a world of difference.

To go off-road, it misses out on a diesel-powered engine. In Brazil, this car is offered with a 2.0 Turbo diesel with 170hp, but with 350 N.m (258 lb/ft) of torque and a ZF 9-speed transmission. The extra torque helps a lot in situations where the AWD system is managing the torque split. However, for the next year, the diesel will be gone to welcome the 2.0T Hurricane with 270hp from the Wrangler

Very often reviewers say that tires are the issue on these sort of cars. I disagree. The issue is suspension travel. Even on basic obstacles, the suspension travel is so little that the tires are simply not contacting the ground with enough pressure to do anything. It doesn't matter what the tread pattern is like. I can guarantee that those same exact tires equipped on a solid axle vehicle would roll right over those spots where the crossover spins out.
