2020 CTWC is here! Here's a quick explanation of the online format: Players from all over the world had 2-hours to qualify and post their highest scores. Then the top 64 were distributed into 8 separate double elimination brackets labeled as Groups A-H. The winner of each Group went on to compete in the Top 8 on December 6th. Players making it to the Top 8 were reseeded based on their performance in their group, and the final Top 8 bracket reverted to a best-of-five single elimination bracket with players receiving the same piece sequences.

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

Yeah that dig was amazing! But I think he should've put the blue L at 5-6 column (34:38~34:39), in that way he wouldn't create that much L or J dependencies and end up creating a dangerous digging situation like that.

Upsets are inevitable when the competitive scene is only just starting to take off skill-wise. The fact that champions can be made after less than 2 years of playing the game means the skill level of the game hasn’t been pushed even close to its limit yet. Jospeh no doubt is incredibly good but him being the first young competitive NES Tetris player gave him a head start and arguable an easier road to the top. Now the scene is filled with fresh blood and filled with pressure to improve to keep up.

Keep in mind that Joseph happened to be incredibly talented as well, even compared to the new generation. He maxed out in 5 months in a time where there were little resources, and Joseph invented new techniques that the new generation is using now. Everyone has built on the progress that Joseph brought (pretty much everyone at the top level studys Joseph’s stacking), and Joseph has done a fine job learning the new things that everyone else is brought as well.
Joseph brought this game to other level and now he has to rise even above it. I think he can do it. Anyway, that was a crazy match
I remember watching Joseph's first final at the age of 15, blitzing in and destroying everyone on sight. Seeing him and hearing his voice at 18 a couple years later really got me mindblown, not to mention how the stress is on him against younger players. A lot like Lee Chang-ho's early emergence and dominance at Go until a new generation of youthful masters emerged like Lee Sedol, Gu Li, etc.

Yeah he could have burned with the square. But I believe the misdrop of that T was the main reason that leaded to the top-out. He wanted to pull the T piece back twice after seeing the next piece was I piece. But he pulled back too slowly that he accidentally pulled back the next piece, which is the I piece, and then he had to press the button once more in order to move the I to the right well. Sadly he didn't react that fast to do so and that cost the game.

Does anyone know how long pieces take to lock? Most sites online claim pieces lock "instantly" once they land, but that T was touching the bottom for 4 frames before it was rotated and then another 4 frames before it was tucked.
@benjaminpalmer6248
3 жыл бұрын
@@EebstertheGreat I'm pretty sure the amount of time it takes a piece to lock is the same as the drop rate at that level. So on level 19 there he would've had 4 frames to execute a flip and then a tuck. That spintuck is pretty cool, I believe sharky made a video going over various spins like that.
@EebstertheGreat
3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminpalmer6248 That's what I thought too, but in the video, it is clearly a total of 8 frames, not 4.
@benjaminpalmer6248
3 жыл бұрын
@@EebstertheGreat Looking at it I think it is a 4 frame window if he hits the spin, because on level 19 pieces fall once every 2 frames. So since the piece is 1 off the bottom (and again assuming that it will take 2 frames to lock) this would be a 4 frame window.
Just watch the video and then read the comments, simple ad that. Spoilers aren't the best thing, but you can't expect people to not talk about what happened in the video

Back when Joseph got all the way to the finals and was not a champ yet, he had something to fight for: to grab that 1st place trophy. Now that he's a 2 time champion, he's already experienced what it feels like to win. There is more to win in winning a trophy you never had, as opposed to protecting the trophy you have won. Next year, Joseph will come back and win it again. The loss will make him come back stronger than before. But yes. His inspiration to bring in such young talent all over the world will def make competition a tough one to overcome. I remember some people saying Jonas was over for losing 3-0 against Huff, with 2 games being close, what will they say now? 🤔 Awesome victory from monster Huff against the nowadays best player 😵 still shocked for that double killscreen, first time happening twice in same game? Ps: Watched again and Jonas loss was 3-1, not 3-0, shame he did some mistake at level 28 in 2nd game
Oh god I felt like my cat was dying my heart is in my bare hands now
im a beginner in tetris, can someone explain me why jonas is not on top/finals anymore? what was wrong? thanks.

My memory’s pretty hazy but I’m pretty sure he said he retired from competing and thought about being a commentator. But unfortunately very recently Jonas passed away, I don’t know when but it was announced on his Instagram :/

Jonas continued to improve but the hypertappers improved at a much faster rate. Other DAS players like Sharky and Quaid had some success but eventually you come across a tapper who scores 900K+ consistently and you're done
