Koryan (1) vs. Zzyzx (Quaid) (9)
Harry Hong (4) vs. Joseph Saelee (5)
Amazing matches in this year's top 8! With commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

Quaid’s well-building strategy is very effective in match play, but he burns more lines than he needs to, and it spells trouble against opponents like Koryan who can maintain a fast pace. Greentea was also having success with unconventional wells, but he could do it more efficiently.

great work getting the closeup shots of Joseph and Koryan hypertapping. One of the downsides of limiting the in-game sounds, is you don't get to hear how unnatural the side-to-side movement sounds when hypertapping is utilized.

Absolutely! In sports such as pool or snooker you routinely get matches played best of 9, 11 or 13 with finals being best of 17 or 19. Something like that would allow really for consistent players to thrive. It's not like these games take very long anyway! Joseph v Harry was only about 18 mins for 3 games. I'd also gladly allow players to continue playing past lvl 28 - not like the game would last much longer anyway because of introducing that rule.

They need to do best of 5’s in the quarterfinals and up at least. Maybe even best of 7. I just think harry and Joseph made some bad mistakes and didn’t have enough games to make it a good match. 1 or 2 extra games would give them a better chance to settle into a match and find their game

Hypertyping is overrated. Joseph has way faster reaction speed than other players, and that's why he won the championship.

I think they explain it a bit in the garage showdown uploaded a few weeks ago. But basically Trey is just really good with technical stuff?

They're playing split screen, both players get the same pieces at the same speed, 1st slight variation changes everything, and best player wins, usually. Not sure if these other guys are trolling you with their answers or if they're stupid.

1:14 Remember when Hauser got eliminated, and he pulled out his hair in rage, and threw his glasses into the crowd?????? People might call him a bad loser, but I think it's good to have such passionate players representing the game.
