From the CTWC website:
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played.
Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges.
In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris.
As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters.
Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees.
Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next?

This is how it should be. Video games should not be just about winning. Life is bigger than video games. Video games bring people together, and we celebrate great achievements together. Competition is only for the sake of advancing the video game and its community as a whole.

He's still one of the best stackers, maybe #2 behind Joseph, he just can't compete with the tappers because they can build so much higher. Hard to say Joseph isn't the GOAT now though, plays at a much higher level than everyone else even in the current hypercompetitive era

Jonas’ placement of the I piece at 10:39 was phenomenal
I first found this video in early 2016 thanks to a random search of the game. I was just so amazed that my childhood favorite had become something like this. (not to mention saddened I didn't know about it in 2010) Now I look at this and I'm blown away by how much the skill ceiling has risen. (and also well both players were able to grow with the scene)
Jonas Neubauer April 19, 1981 - January 5, 2021 Passing the torch to the new generations. Thanks for everything Jonas! Will remember you the most in October during CTWC....

I believe at 33:17, the emcee in the background should have waited until their round was finished. It looked like it almost distracted Quaid, but I guess that's an observation. I mean really, don't be talking over the sound system when a round is happening.

I thought the same thing, it's obvious that it distracted him enough to cause him to fuck up. He was going perfect until the announcer started talking. Dude on the speaker really needed to shut the fuck up and wait e.e Is it really that important of a message?

Yeah it's held at the Retro Gaming Expo. Don't think the scene is big enough for a private tournament, and attendance would be a lot lower.
Jonas is unreal. So consistent
I asked Quaid whether the announcement (IN 5 MINUTES WE WILL BE STOPPING ALL VENDOR SALES) distracted him while playing, and he said that it did and it kinda fucked up his game. Sad honestly, the venue should've waited at least until they're not in a match to announce something like that.

This game is such a battle. I can't believe these guys' ability to stack these shapes. The number one thing I notice is their foresight with clearing lines. They immediately know where to put the two pieces so that the line gets cleared and make space.
Поддался Jonas в третьем раунде. Видно как делал триплы вместо тетрисов на 19 скорости. Настолько уверен в своих силах, что не стал расстраивать организаторов быстрым финалом. Реальный Бог.
Wow, Jonas is such a cool and collected player. Plus, I want him on my team if I ever have to go up against Weeping Angles. That guy never blinks!
