2014 Classic Tetris World Championship Final Match: Harry vs. Jonas

Ойындар

For the first time, complete video of the historic 2014 Final Match between Harry Hong and Jonas Neubauer! --learn more at thectwc.com
With full commentary by Video Game Hall-of-Famer Chris Tang, this match is a real gem for all you Tetris fans out there.
From the CTWC website:
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played.
Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges.
In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris.
As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters.
Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees.
Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next?

Interesting how everyone has stepped up their game since 2014, both the commentators and the players - and it's mostly the same people, which makes it even more admirable! As if they're pulling each other to greater heights. Notice, for example, how their custom-written software now shows more clearly the scoring differences (and other player stats), which frees up the commentator to offer his perspective on more interesting things :)

Counted a 54-piece longbar drought for Jonas in that last game. With true RNG, the odds on that happening are (6/7)^54, or 0.024%. In other words, a drought that long statistically will happen about once every 4000 games.

  • @badatphilosophy

    @badatphilosophy

    5 жыл бұрын

The 0.024% part is correct though the 1 in 4000 games part isn't. It's much more frequent than that, since each game consists of multiple opportunities to get a 54+ piece drought. It's like saying "the chance of getting two of the same pieces in a row is 1/7, so that'll happen only once in every 7 games", which is obviously wrong

Look, it wasn't his average game. It was about 25% out of his best capabilities(while 50% being his average). I don't really play Tetris myself but I watched 2017, 2016, 2015 and now 2014 finals. And even I see that here there was a lot of misdrops for some reason from Jonas and also luck wasn't at his side. Jonas lost not because he played worse but because of random factors which played deciding role here. PS B O O M ! T E T R I S F O R J E F F ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Crazy how the level of play has improved since then. At that time you could win games in the finals with only two or three tetrises between transition and killscreen. Nowadays we have matches in Classic Tetris Monthly routinely going to double maxouts (including dogplayingtetris LOSING a set after maxing out every game in the set). Anything other than full aggression will fall behind your opponent these days.

I remember when this is what we had to rely on when it comes to a win from someone other than Jonas, and I was hoping for another win too. And now here we are with the Joseph Saelee hypertapping/rolling generation building upon the historic 2018 win by Joseph, now with over fifty times the view count of this 2014 win, and more than the 2016 _Boom! Tetris for Jeff_ meme. Although it is well out of my reach, I agree with the New Yorker that the maxout has turned from a legendarily hard feat to pull off to a rite of passage for newer and younger players like Joseph. The 2014 championship may have created this whole idea but it wasn't until 2018 when it really started to kick off, and even after the untimely passing of Jonas the performance by these new players blows away the performances from the classical 2010-17 generation of Tetris players. That is truly a stellar trend, but this is where it all started. I recommend people to trace it back to this match.

It's interesting how in 2014, a Tetris past lvl 18 was something special and they opted more for doubles and triples to play it safe. Nowadays you have to bang down tetrises all the way from lvl 18 to lvl 28 in order to to keep up.

Does anyone know why Harry chooses a much faster pace than everyone else? It doesn't seem to benefit him, seeing as he'd be more prone to mistakes, and it doesn't seem like he will score higher since there's a 'death-screen' after a fixed number of lines?

Boom, Tetris for Jeff happened. That was in 2016 or 17, iirc. And then Joseph saw that and started practicing, and in 2018 he wanted to see if he was good enough to qualify - at which point he beat Jonas in the finals. And *that* fairytale ending got a whole bunch of other people interested. Mind you, Harry and Jonas are both *much* better payers than they were in 2014. But the field is now full of literally dozens of people who could have easily won this final against the 2014 version of Jonas and Harry. At the same time, the technical underpinnings of the tournament got a lot better (thanks to Trey), which results in much better video quality, and makes the scene more interesting. But, yeah, it’s just like the Guitar Hero scene - people suddenly started getting really good at playing a decades old game when you started to be able to put your practice sessions on twitch and make if not a decent living, at least not really starve doing it.
