In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

@@Albimar17 Not exactly. I think he still has a good chance of winning another victory or at least getting to the finals. Joseph is also human and just like everyone makes mistakes. Just that Jonas will play relatively safe and slow as he played before and if he gets a sufficiently high lead before level 19 he has a chance to win with him, and I assure he is capable of it. After all, the title of seven-time world champion is not just for show no matter in which years he won it. In addition, Greentea, like Jonas, is also not a hypertapper and yet he is still able to keep pace with the current champion.

@@lanthiandokenhennes1805 That's true. I'd really like to see a rematch between Jonas and Joseph. Although Joseph has been practicing a lot and I hear that Jonas doesn't like to practice Tetris a whole lot before the tourney. There's a relatively new vid that came out by Joseph that had him make a 700k pre transition, and got max out at 23. If he keeps up like that, he doesn't really need to hyper-tap til the kill screen and it'll be hard for Jonas to keep up with him. Guess we'll have to see.

Congratulations to Joseph and GreenTea, two of my favourite competitors. Both players went above and beyond every expectation and delivered us some truly amazing matches. GreenTea's tucks, Joseph's microadjustments. GreenTea's lovely and bright smile, Joseph's positivity. Two insanely good players who really love the game, what less could we expect? The matches were not only high-leveled, but they were delivered to us by two players who are so passionate and so invested into the game, that managed to transfer to us the excitment and even the joy they felt, simply through a screen (I can't even begin to imagine what it would've been like to see it live). Congratulations to Joseph for the two Maxout's and for managing to take multiple games in a row from GreenTea, an accomplishment that I have a feeling many won't recognise. Congratulations to GreenTea for the Maxout and for taking the first game from Joseph by pushing him into the killscreen, pressuring the young world champion. Joseph and GreenTea are two of the best Ness Tetris players, in my opinion, with a deep passion and love for the game. I believe that when against each other they also pushed each other to their absolute limits, and even more than that, in a way that I haven't seen many opposing players do. Neither of them could put on the breaks for a even a second, even the slightest mistake allowing the other to catch up. Once again, congratulations to Joseph and GreenTea.

Joseph seems to perform the best when he’s under pressure, like the other player beating him in the first game or being behind on points during a game which makes him push harder, and Greentea really pushed him!

Its a very rare ability, I watch his streams sometimes to and hes certainly not above getting frustrated at times sometimes even often, though hes still always fun and likeable, but then when its tournament time he just goes into some weird like mayweather gear and is border line unbeatable, I think only Richard has beaten him a couple times in online death matches-which arent the same stakes I think if Richard were at this event Joseph woulda beat him to,and Koryan has played Joseph 3 maybe 4 times in tetris Monthly tournament finals and is the only one to beat Joseph and he did so one time, Joseph then won the next 2 straight times and hes just about the only player in the world who can make Koryan not look totally invincible.

  • @melody720

Danny Madness That’s what I’ve noticed! Most people choke in tournament but Joseph seems to play better in tournament than at home by himself which is insane. Also the fact that he’s only participated in like 3 CTMs and won 2 of them, both against koryan no less! Although I would say he’s close in skill to Koryan and Richard as they seem to take turns winning games 😆 It’s probably more down to the type of rng they’re getting when doing these online matches. It’s just that Koryan and Richard chokes in real-life tournaments and Joseph doesn’t

@@melody720 Yeah pretty much man its very impressive, and you could see how much more confident he was this year to he wasnt just crushing he was having genuine fun you know, but while remaining humble its quite a sight to see.I know Jonas is still one of the best in the world-I love Joshs style but I mean hes not better then Jonas yet look what happened this year ya know! so dif factors at play Jonas will be back, but can Jonas on his best day beat Joseph probably not.and his confidence is only growing before his 18th birthday no less.

  • @dannymadness1382

And Koryan himself has improved at least times 2 since last year he used to be a great player but his style if you remember was just score as many points before I top out usually far before the kill screen back in 2017-2018 now hes way more complete and just a monster he can beat 99.9 percent of players at any given time at any tournament, and yet Joseph and only Joseph somehow makes even Koryan look not insanely perfect ya know, not that Koryan cant hang or beat Joseph on his best night himself given the same rng and etc,but I think you know what I mean, sometimes the gap between 1st and 2nd is just that great again il use a random boxing reference mayweather fought back in 2009 a mexican legend named Juan manuel Marquez, and Mayweather shut him out I mean embarrassing wipe out 12 rounds to 0 poor Marquez didnt win a single second of a single minute of a single round, and yet even as good as Marquez fought that night had he faced anyone else hed likely have won but against Floyd Mayweather and only Floyd he could hardly land a meaningful punch all night ya know, thats the difference sometimes between 1 and 2 and the rest, and right now Joseph is that #1 and is that good.
