This Quarterfinal match of the 2019 Classic Tetris World Championship is widely considered the greatest CTWC match of all time! It was a confrontation for the ages between returning champ Joseph Saelee from California and multi-platform Tetris specialist and Grandmaster Greentea from Japan. In the original stream, Joseph and Greentea shared the screen with another concurrent match, so our editors reconstructed a fullscreen version to highlight this historic showdown. Commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

My favorite thing about Classic Tetris compared to other esports is the genuine camaraderie between all of the top players. They all seem to be having fun and never seem to get too salty about losing. It just gives the whole event a really easygoing and cool vibe

That is true it’s enjoyable. I can understand why other sports are that way though. Tetris isn’t exactly a widely popular game nor is it nearly as psychologically competitive as say chess. I think for somebody to lose a chess game and be upset would be understandable. To lose a Tetris game and be upset would be childish

There are barely any esports where there isn't some sort of genuine camaraderie. A compilation of a player grunting at his screen because he lost the chance for a mil doesn't mean hes salty about the loss in general. They almost all like each other.

I think it comes down to the ruleset, here in classic tetris both players compete for the highest amount of points, with the exact same order of pieces, every mistake YOU do sets YOU back, as opposed to other tetris games where you send garbage lines... It boils down to individual skill and fundamentals to come out on top and it makes it easier to recognize losses because the other player had no effect on your gameplay, you can only blame yourself, so this camaraderie is as reasonable and organic as it gets.

If anyone is wondering why the commentators randomly stop for periods, it's because there is a second game going on at the same time as this one and the commentators are casting both games. The audio cuts out when they start focusing on the other game.

A maxout is when you reach 999999 points, where the game normally stops counting higher. However, the world championships use a Game Genie code which can show a seventh digit. Game 2 was the first maxout in the world championship ever, so both players doing it the very next game is just crazy.

I was lucky enough to see the tournament stream live and this was such an exhilarating match that I just want to watch again and again. What I love most is that in the CTWC you basically can't maxout on your own, no matter how brilliant you are. It needs both players to push each other to the limit, truly worthy opponents, and this was the most beautiful payoff one could wish for two amazingly skilled, dedicated and friendly players, who clearly had the time of their lives.

The Tetris community has pushed the envelope so far in the last 5 or so years! Compared to the current post-Killscreen plays it seems easy to underestimate how HYPE and how big of a deal this match was. But in a way, everyone is standing on the shoulders of giants. From Jonas, to Joseph, and onwards, each Champion inspiring a new generation. Each breakthrough setting a precedent, a challenge to aim higher. It was a pleasure to have seen this unforgettable match live on stream, history in the making. First CTWC direct competition Maxout, first Double Killscreen, and there isn't a pair of players I would have wished it more to achieve. Greentea is a challenging opponent, a wonderful guy, and has done so much for the Tetris community, and Joseph's skill and contributions need no introduction. They made a competition dream a reality, and this will always remain a highlight. Truly a Moment of Awesome for both.
