I just wanted to say, you made arguably the best oil change video I've ever seen. Im used to working on american cars were there crammed and your cursing for a hour. This seems so easy and fun to work on like cars of yesteryears and you made even more comforting. Thank you.

The Kia is packed full of stuff to try and move around but I get it. My first car was a 1988 plymouth caravelle. Changing the starter was a breeze. Alternator just as easy. SO MUCH ROOM. This kia.. anything pasts lights, oil and brakes idk if I will be touching due to how packed tight it all is.

Good video. Going to do this today. I'm removing that black plastic cover to have better access.

I know it's an old video and my oil pan and dip stick are a liitle different from yours; but this video helped me so much! I was tired of paying someone $70 to change this oil. So I went to wal-mart and spent $26 for oil and another $9 for a filter. Thirty-five dollars and about thirty minutes later my oil is changed! Also, the filter is far different from the one That I took off of it, so the shop that did it before may have installed the wrong one....anyway, Thanks!

6:17 Just want to mention, pre-filling the filter is usually something pertaining to turbocharged engines. In a normal car, you could overfill the engine by filling the filter + the recommended amount. Unless it's turbocharged, and IDK at all about diesels, don't pre-fill the filter. And if you do pre-fill the filter, then start with 1/2 qt less when you fill. It's way easier to add more than to remove oil. It's also drastically more harmful to overfill at all than to run short a quart or more than spec.

Indeed, the turbo wont even be spinning when you start it for the first time, at least not at any rpm you need worry about and there will be residual oil coating it anyway. That's also taking into account that it's not a self contained oiler which many new ones are. @@ronmcgreggor8404

Glad to help. Hope that you have been doing all your own oil changes! I honestly cannot remember if there is a crush washer or not for my car. I know my motorcycle has one but been too many hours since last oil change.

9:18 If you have a torque wrench, it's handy, not sure of this spec, but 21-30 ft-lb is usually safe. Definitely don't want to crank it down. "firmly snug" I would say. There should be a gasket. If it's nylon or plastic, then "ideally" it gets changed with each service. If it's metal, it might be rated for longer. Either way, it's there to keep a proper seal at the right torque. If you overtighten the bolt, it can damage the washer or the threads and cause leaks.

Maybe a stupid question, but should the car be parked and the engine off for a long period before doing this? Also, should it be left to run for a bit after doing the oil change to get the new oil circulated throughout? Thanks!

Hey thanks for the comment! When I do my oil changes, typically I get home from work and wait an hour or two for it to cool down. to each their own really but I don't like having hot oil on my hands. I usually go out for a test drive to to make sure everything sounds good and get it moving through the car but not sure what the proper procedure is. Not a mechanic just play one on TV haha

If you don’t want to make a mess when pouring in the oil you can set the dip stick to guide the oil into the motor. :)

The correct torque spec on the drain plug is 25.3 ~ 32.5 lb-ft and on the filter (no one ever uses this lol) is 8.7 ~ 11.6 lb-ft. Hand tight plus about 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the filter gasket has seated.

Also, for a 2014 Kia Soul, for some reason the triangle plate marked "engine oil" is useless and the oil doesn't drain out from there, the oil actually drains out from the square capless hole behind it at 1:27. Also, how tall are your ramps? I have a 6 inch tall ramp and I have so little space to work under, I could not turn side ways. I made the same mistaken dropping the oil plug nut into the waste oil bucket lol...

Aren't you suppose to replace drain pin nut after each oil change to minimize potential for leaks?

You can change the oil wrench to be more easy. that filter is made for those cap wrench you can buy at advance auto.i think is a 3/8 and you can use a rachet.

I have never had much luck with those on this car or my older one. The grip might not work too well with anyone that has the plastic cover(Probably close to everyone) but it is universal and can be used on any car in the future. Not arguing it might be easier but like I said, just never had much luck with them. Thanks for the Comment! Q

Should you have changed the copper compression gasket on the oil pan plug? I noticed having the vehicle on the ramps, you elevated the front of the car, the oil plug drain is on the wrong end of the oil pan and old oil is left in the vehicle, with that design, it really needs to be up on a lift where the pan will drain properly. You also didn't mention what engine that is, 1.6 or 2.0. I'm going to assume it was a 2.0, because I just watched another video that was different and it was a 1.6. Maybe they only made one engine in 2016, I don't know. I just bought a 2016. Thanks for your video.

Yes, always change the "crush" gasket. They're called a crush gasket for a reason and are seldom able to be reused generally resulting in a slow drip leak! Seeing as he used 3.8 liters of oil that would make this the 1.6l engine.

Good video. Using ramps angled like that aren't you leaving a lot of oil in the pan?

I know I'm 10months late but figure I address this now than never. I have tested before by down the ramp to see how much comes out. its a dribble at best. maybe if I backup onto the ramps more would come out but 6~ oil changes I have had no issues and don't see any reason not to use ramps(A lot easier than a jack and some stands in my opinion).

Hey, great video. thanks! Too bad about the coyote, and your vehicle. I've been looking at a Kia Forte sedan with the manual transmission....just started looking as the Soul, manual. I like the fact the Forte has a cd player....anyway, Kia's seem really reliable...how's yours been? Do you ever use a thicker oil like a 5w30?

@@quintendoty5591 I ended up in a 18 Elantra. 2.0 same as the Forte. Manual transmission. 78K. Mechanically sound. It's a nice reliable ride. Not very powerful but that's the gas mileage trade off.

According to KIA either 5W20 or 5W30 full synthetic is fine.

You need to replace the crush gasket as well. They're cheap and called a "crush" gasket for a reason. They are generally not reusable! They're just an M14 gasket and usually come in packs of multiples for as little as $6 CDN

the 2.0L engine uses 3.8 quarts engine oil as well or does it need more? Could you do a video with the plastic plate on? It's 10x harder to change the oil without removing that.. because it's so hard to apply force to remove the oil filter, draining the oil is okay though.

The manual for my 2016 Soul 2.0l lists 4.2 quarts

You dont need to remove the entire under panel. Just those 2 covers will give you all the access you need.

Did you take a Mobil 1 Filter off and replace with an STP filter? Was the STP on sale?

Nice man. I have a 2017. 1.6 non turbo soul. Just wondering if the auto has a torque converter and is a regular automatic.... or is it something else like a CVT or a Dct??? I does not plainly say in the manual.. just wondering. :) great vid

I know for sure the Kia soul doesn't have CVT, and DCT is for the 1.6L turbo, but as to your other question, whether it has a torque converter or is a regular automatic, you can email Kia. Did you get an answer yet by the way?

A regular automatic (whatever you mean by that) will have a torque converter at the very least, that is to say if there is no CVT.@@belowmars

Nice video. One recommendation tho... Lift the back of the car as well to drip more oil still inside the pan, specially when the bolt faces the front side of the car like the Soul. I estimate 1/4 to 1/2 at oil remained due to this (driveway, front only lift, bolt in front)

Possible but might need better tools cause a bit more tight. Never had to do that since coyote ran in front of me before I even made the first payment

My oil gets pretty black. I change my oil every 3000 miles and each one has been pretty dark. I think that's fairly normal but I am no scientist!

How difficult is it to get the plastic shield piece off that you already had off? And have you ever changed the oil with that piece on and how difficult is it versus not having it on? I'm going to attempt this this week and any tips will definitely be appreciated.

Hey Lorrie, I really didn't want that to come off, I hit a coyote and it just kinda fell off... however I know that it is held on by 5 or 6 nuts going into the engine block. Then it connects to the front bumper with clips. I wouldn't recommend taking it off. The most difficult part of the whole change is going to be getting the fuel filter loose and getting a tool into that area to get it. But once you have it off you are good to go and start draining. If you have trouble getting the drain bolt off, try extending the breaker bar or using a PVC pipe to extend the length of one you have. I Hope this helped! Ok, I like to think I am not a complete moron (and if I am, shh..please don't tell me) but I cannot get the oil filter off and I have literally spent all day at this. Plug was a piece of cake....filter....omfg! I have tried 2 different types of filter wrenches (band & pliers look alike), 2 sizes of cap wrenches, poked a hole in the top to see if I could wrench it off that way.....and I still haven't been able to get it to budge! First, I am fairly certainly that they didn't put on the correct size filter because the mobile 1 filter I bought fit the one cap but the one on there did not - cap was too small. Any other ideas? I had no idea the filter was going to be this much of a PITA!

Is this your first oil change for this car? The factory one they give and the mobile one I think might be a little different. Make sure you have the right filter on there now... Did you already drain the oil and fill it up again?? if so the oil will leak again out from the filter just wanted to give a heads up on that. Next thing that you might try is taking off all the screws for the plastic plate and try and leave the body clips on. I would be very careful doing this. I am not a professional by any means so take my advice with a grain of salt, but you might be able to get better accesss by doing this. Just be careful not to rip any of the body clips from the front bumper.

Also I would double check from the store that you got the right filter just to make sure... and maybe try out a couple of the wrenches if they will let you without buying them?? Hope this helps, Lorrie!!

Thanks you so much for all of your time, help and support on this. It IS the first oil change since I purchased from the dealership and since I have nothing nice to say about those mechanics at this point, I will just keep quiet. I had tried one more type of wrench - grip? (looks like a c-shape) which the guy at the store did tell me I could return and, after again being unable to get any hand room and thus any torque, was ready to call it a day when I decided to try one last wrench - went to my local Farm & Fleet and the guy there was beyond wonderful. I wanted to try the 3 prong wrench that fits a socket wrench (same as cap wrench set-up but prongs tighten as you turn it) and he took it out of the package to make sure it did what it was supposed to do. He agreed how worthless the cap wrenches are for overtightened filters and explained to me about the filter size - they evidently can be different size on the outside but of course have to be the same hole and thread size though the logic of making the filters different sizes externally for the same car escapes me. I took that little miracle worker home and darned if it didn't get the job done. I will definitely be contacting the store manager to tell him know what a gem he has in this guy. I'm thinking I set a record somewhere for the longest oil change ever at 9 hours, start to finish, but may pass on trying to claim that dubious honor. ; ) Thank you again for posting your video and your help; I know that next time this will be accomplished in much less time.

If you REALLY want to make getting the filter off easy, you will get one of the giant polygonous sockets that fits over the polygonous (is that a real word?) end of the oil filter just like a hexagonal socket fits over a hexagonal bolt head. Your 3/8 inch square drive extension bar snaps into the 3/8 inch hole in the oil filter giant socket, your 3/8 drive breaker bar, or ratchet handle, connects to the extension bar, and thereby you get your hand out about 8 inches away from anything it can bump into and get all the room in the world for your hand when turning the oil filter around in circles. Most people already have a set of 3/8 drive stuff, and so the polygonous socket is then the only thing they will need to buy in order to rotate the polygonous oil filter. It will probably cost you mush less that that giant kitchen tool pickle jar opener you are using. If you don't already have a 3/8 drive socket set, you can get a cheapo junky ratchet handle and an 8 inch extension, for very little. They sell these all over the place, even in supermarkets. Yes they will bend or break if you try to loosen a well-tightened hardened fastener - but they will be fine for loosening a properly tightened oil filter. These are supposed to be put on only hand tight. Tighten the drain plug immediately after you put it in - before you forget. If you read the car owner manual and find the right amount of oil to put into the car, you won't ever have to "take any out." That almost never happens. But in the rare cirmcumstance where you mistakenly read the manual for your big truck and put that amount of oil in your little car - you can loosen the drain plug even though it was properly tightened. It just takes a moment longer.

I have found those to not fit every model and I like the grippers better. I do have one of those, but never found it much of use... I agree that you should never have to take any out, but in case you do, this will save you a step and since people are doing it at home, mistakes do happen and they might over fill. But I see your point there at the end about just un-tighten it. Just personal Preference :) Thanks for the comment !

Indeed, always tighten the drain plug all the way before walking away.. you do not want to lose it! you can always break it loose again if you need to.

Can you say more about how to get your car far enough off the ground safely? It will be my first time trying this and I don’t want an accident!

Ramps are pretty straight forward. You put them in front of your front tire and drive up them slowly. Most of them have a bump at the front so you don't go over it, but as long as you are slow you should not hit it. You can feel it sit into the ramp once you are at the top. If you are using a jack, I recommend looking up other videos on how to jack up the Kia soul. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZqhu6acl6zWoNI.html This video seems to give good examples and spots you can put a jack without damage. You prefill the oil filter not for measuring purposes but to ensure you don't get a quick moment of dry run as it pumps it on into the filter ..

Got the ramps at Autozone. Not sure on brand I think Rhino or something like that but I could be totally wrong. Just some Drive up ramps. Any within the weight class should hold up just fine!

I went a solid like 20k miles before changing my last time. No issues but I run full synthetic. probably not recommended by many but who knows.

Isn't the tilt from the ramp going to prevent full drainage of your oil ?

I'm not going to sit here and say that they have never failed in the history of them being around, but the ones that I have are pretty sturdy. They look like its just a shell of plastic but there is a lot of reinforcement pieces. As long as you are setting it up correctly, I would say you would have to want it to fail for them to fail. The brand I have is RhinoRamps. If you google Durable RhinoRamps it will pop up. From its description: "Easily holds up to 12,000 lbs."

Being so close to the front. Can you do it without lifting the car?

Most certainly! Around here synthetic oil change is like $60-75 for someone else to do it. Usually the filter and oil have some 'sale' where you get them together for like $30-35. Takes an hour of your time(if you count cooling the car in your driveway) and you know its done right when you do it instead of a shop.

I do wish you would show a video on how to remove the under-body plastic panel and put it back on again. "Under-body" might be the wrong term to use. Maybe it's called a "belly pan." Anyway, I do wish I knew how to get rid of the flat black plastic panel from the bottom of the car.
