For this video, I review the very popular Barton short shifter along with the Barton 2 Post shifter bracket for the new 5.0 Mustang. The throws of the shifter are pretty incredible. This was installed in a 2013 Mustang GT Coyote 5.0, and ordered from LateModelRestoration.com

KZread is now my official full time job.
I actually heard some bad reviews of the hurst for the new 5.0 which is unfortunate. So I went with Barton, they have had pretty much only positive reviews plus it shifts insane.
Unfortunately I have to defend them quite often for many people thinking they are like the old V6 Mustangs (which no offense Ford-they were a joke) So that mindset of people who say don't follow Mustangs or Muscle cars it's hard for many to take them seriously since the old ones were no competition. However, the new V6's are no joke. They pull pretty good, and handle like champs.
After running my dads 06 Saleen with a short throw, it's moved into one of my "high priority need to do" mods for my car. I love the feel and overall appearance of a shorter stick.
It is hard not to "just do the same angle" when you are the only person filming. And the reverse spring is the same as stock just a little bit more stiff, it's the same motion.
Thanks! Let me know if you are ever near the area and I'll make the trip!
It's even more precise!
I went with the MGW shifter and have been incredibly happy. The install was a PIA, but it replaces the entire upper and lower shifting unit including the rear bracket. All in all very solid and I am very pleased.
very cool review--looks like you are still having fun mate. cheers!
ur videos are great. really appreciate ur honesty
I have the same shifter set up and I Love it because you can reallly feel it engaging in the gear compared to not really knowing sometimes.
I also went with the Barton Short Throw shifter and bracket. As an enthusiast I am 100% satisfied with my choice. I actually enjoy the added sounds from the shifter and winding transmission noise. It's as if the car is talking to me and I can now hear it. Love it!
Thanks for the response. I've been hesitant on removing that spring because I like the way the clutch feels now. I'm a huge fan of your off road x pipe too. Contemplating getting it for my roush axle backs.
When I say "notchy" I suppose I mean it in a better sense. With this shifter the shifting is extremely direct and kind of "locks into" gear.
Love the sound!!! and i put a short throw on an 89 and completely transformed the shifts
Thanks! And awesome!
I sure am. I'm going to ask around here at Mustang week to see if it is normal.
I'll make a 0-60 as soon as I get better tires.lol And somewhere in the 420ish hp range to the ground.
I just got this for my 06 GT it's a must have upgrade
Thanks!
I have not, but i have thought about doing that as well.
Don't blame you!
I like it indeed.
Drool! Want the shifter for my 6 shooter stang!
Well said.
When's your next video Coming up? man you make awesome videos!
Unfortunately most of my things do. But if I ever need service I'll probably just throw stock parts back on lol
Hey David have you gone with a blowfish bracket yet? They're said to be awesome.
Yay first like and comment again you seem to get a lot of stuff from late model restoration would you recommend the hood struts
Have you ever driven a newer 5.0 with the mgw shifter? I've read in many forums people say go with the mgw and don't look back. You seem to have honest opinions, so i'd like to here what you think on barton vs mgw.
Hey man question, I was looking into getting a short shifter for my 14 cause when I bought used it came with the sr short shifter from AM and it’s sucks. But was wondering if this would be worth it instead of spending the big bucks for an mgw?
The noise goes away after about 2 weeks of driving. I have the same shifter it's great!

Thanks for the info.
nice. i was thinking of that brand weeks ago compares to another brand. helps alot!
Haha thanks dude!
Roush Axleback with an offroad x pipe
Very nice!
does this mod fix the 2011-2014 mustang's gear shifting problem?
Call me crazy, but didn't you review a short throw shifter already? I could have sworn I remembered you reviewing one. Anyway, great video as always!
Is it still precise as before? Does it still have the same feel popping in to gears?
Asked Barton themselves here at Mustang week. It's normal!
I love notchy shifters
Have you removed the stock clutch spring? I have experienced my first high RPM clutch pedal sticking to the floor the other day... =[
So it DOES retain reverse lockout is what your saying... good. I went cheaper and got the SR performance shifter and the SOAB would go into reverse when I am sitting at a redlight and I would never be able to launch because I would never know if I was gonna fly backwards, haha.
What exhaust do you have? Sounds great!
Hey man, your videos are awesome and keep making more! I have a question. How do you like your Barton Short Throw Shifter?

ThatDudeinBlue Welcome! And I just ordered one for my car and I've been trying to find out if people liked it or not. Thanks for replying!
Makes sense! Lol and yah I know how to put stock parts back on but I heard the dealers are super strict and can tell a car has an aftermarket tune on it....
Hmmm so all in all uou like it ok? I've been up in the air but recent events have me leaning toward a short throw my stock shifter seems very slow and clunky
Also can you do a 0-60 video and how much hp are you putting out now?
Hey David, don't you void factory warranty by installing all the things that you have?I would like to do most of the things you have done to mine, but don't want to mess with factory warranty. Love all your reviews.always looking to see what others are doing to their mustangs.
Does this break do I need the mgw or will Barton do it ?
Man, I'm about the same size as this guy, and that steering wheel looks huge.
it' freaking awesome...BUT the getting into reverse is a BIT tough at times lol. and i've managed to get my 0-60 times down to 4.1.
Does anyone know if a 2014 V6 MT82 will fit a 2014 Mustang 5.0?
You know I'm A super honda head, buy damn I love your car man so fucking clean.
Some people have trouble going from 2nd to 3rd.... That's me! I want this mod ... but can it really be more notchy that the stock shifter? I find the stock shifter very notchy. I have a 2012, not 2013 though.
Why didn't u get get the hurst short throw shifter?
Hey That dude in Blue, I just ordered a new 2014 mustang v6, just couldn't afford the V8. Do V6s get much respect in your local car community?
Arent you worried about voiding the warranty??
How many miles do you have now? 16,000?
Hey David, where do you work?
Show us a angle of you shifting pleas that would be awesome
its not THAT bad to get into reverse, but you got some skinny arms dude. Dont skip arm day!

Haha, well it was my fault actually-I put the leather boot on the wrong way so it made it way harder than it should have been. I fixed it and you're right. It's not so bad.
at risk of sounding dumb, are most short throw shifters car specific, or are they more universal? Asking because I drive a merkur xr4ti, car specific parts for it are very expensive because of its rarity.

Stick shift? I want one in my future car!
^What he said.
Hi I'm planning to purchase this Barton shifter with the bracket I have the GT 2013 witch is stored for winter and as only 900Km its brand new from 1 to 10 what scale of a number do you recommend me to purchase. Thanks Michel from Canada

A solid 8-9 my friend. The only thing is you'll have to get used to the extra transmission noise. Only thing and I love it!
I have a friend here locally with a 2012 v6 mustang. He has a jlt and a bama tune and just some knock off axle backs. You may see a video or two of him floating around out running a Camaro SS and a challenger R/T. Don't let anyone talk bad about your v6 car. They're nothing to take lightly now days :D
Dave, I JUST bought a 2013 Candy Red 5.0, traded in the red GTI in my profile pic for it. I have a question though, do you ever get synchro nibble, or grinds going from 1st to 2nd gear? It doesnt always do it for me, but its a lot more frequent than I am used to coming from my GTI (which is known for its awesome transmission, buttery smooth)

Install a Barton short shifter with Barton 2 post shifter bracket, replace the clutch, flywheel, and throw-out bearing. and you wont have any more problems with the transmission. the bushings on the stock shifter aren't the best, they wear rather quickly. the stock clutch of 2011-2012 had issues with them, no surprise the same clutch kit is probably used in 2013-2014 model. also, check out your clutch pedal helper spring, those tend to cause issues in models below 2014. best of luck

Gary Bagley Yeah i get like a bit of a click or klink sometimes going into second, and when i'm gunning the shit out of the car the car a lot of the time just doesnt want to go into third

mkelebay Noticed the 3rd gear lockout myself on hard pulls, doesnt bother me that much really, id rather it do that than grind tbh. But since the weather has warmed up here, i havent gotten a single grind. I replaced the fluid in the tranny with redline MTL and it helped a bit, i may just do that every 20-30k or so just to be safe. Only put 6k on her since I got her about 6 months ago.

Gary Bagley about that third gear lockout, trust me on this, your third isn't locking you out. what happens is under certain load the gearbox kinda moves from its place, causing the third gear to be offset to the right side rather than the usual center, try to shift a little more to the right rather than center.

+Rashid Al-Riyami have you had any experience with MGW, I am only having a problem with 1st - 2nd shifts and haven't missed a gear. Recommend a short throw or other upgrades to fix this..? Any help is appreciated.
Quick question, I have this shifter as well in my 14 gt.. And youre right it is very noisy.. Does yours make like a whirring type noise when you shift between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and third? It kind of sounds like yours makes the same noise as mine in the video but its hard to tell. I just wana make sure thats how the shifter is and its not my car. Also have you ever had it in 1st and just had it like pop out into neutral by itself? Its done that twice to me and then it like locks you out of 1st it was weird. Great review though.

Natural Aesthetic Lifestyle I had the same problem on my '14, I put the factory bracket back in with the barton shifter and LOVE IT. I get the short direct feel with some vibration/noise isolation. Only takes a few min to try, you may love it also. My Mustang is now a pleasure to drive.

+GamingWarriors the grinding whirring type noise inbetween shifts went away? I feel like the new bracket makes the shifts alot crsiper from stock bracket. Why would it be the bracket making that noise?
@gamingwarriors7528
8 жыл бұрын
Natural Aesthetic Lifestyle I'm far from an expert, but all i can say is I installed the shifter/bracker and hated it. I'm a mechanical person by trade (HVAC) so I want to feel the transmission but it was a bit much for cruising with the wife. I switched back to the stock bracket with all it rubber sloppyness and to my surprise, I still had a "solid feel" to the shifter with must less of the shit sound/feel that you have now. It's not perfect and maybe not for everyone but like I said before, it only takes a short time to pop in the stock bracket and see for yourself. Who knows you may enjoy driving that awesome mustang even more. =)

+Natural Aesthetic Lifestyle It's just the bracket gives it less room for vibration. The factory bracket has that bushing in it which lets it flex and there's less vibration/noise transferred through it because it isn't solid. The bracket is a solid billet of metal so all of the vibrations come through now. It's a trade off for these sorts of things. When u solid mount something NVH is just a by product. Get sum sound deadening material and stick it around the bracket and in the tunnel. Should help some.

Natural Aesthetic Lifestyle i just installed mine and it does this same exact thing. have been looking all over and asking people but glad I found your comment. did you ever find a solution? or is it just normal? i really hope you reply man lol
I have to have things to film first.haha.
I just install my Barton and its bracket. The throw is short, but I hear and feel the gears. It sound very painful to the ears, and the sound it makes...makes me feel like putting the OEM back on. Is it normal

Knott Shore did you ever find a solution? just installed mine and it makes a “whirring” noise
Cool
where do you get the money to mod your car! lucky :(
Don't worry there are 3.7's that are running in the 12's N/A and making 350 hp all motor. Gears, Tune, Intake, Exhaust, they are quick. Plus there is always nitrous, superchargers and turbo's. They can beat GT's if they are done right.
Guys MightyCarMods made a video how to install a short shifter.
Not if you know how to put stock parts back on or have a cool dealership that doesn't care.
not noisy in the new ones
It shouldn't make much more noise than stock since your inner shift boots really should be absorbing most of it
Haha nope! I never have had one. And thanks!
I want it so bad, but im afraid to void drivetrain
I bought my '14 5.0 from Hall Ford way out by Patrick Henry Mall
I got a 93 Ford Mustang GT, 302 HO 98thou origional miles. Bbk long tubes, H pipes, not much, meh. Going to pull the block, have yet to decide to do rebuild, or crate engine.
had one...and..my clutch disk...kinda.. Disintegrated ..hence why i got rid the of car...
Had this shifter and bracket for 2 days and ripped it out. So much NVH is unacceptable for a piece close to $400, plus the throw is just wayy too short, there is no magic to it, you change the fulcrum point and you have to increase the force to make up for it meaning you will have to muscle through every gear all the time. I am daily driving my car and it was just a noisy PITA using this thing. Went to stock shifter with red Steeda bushing. The red Steeda bushing secures the remote shifter just as good as the Barton 2 post with out any added noise, i highly recommend it. I was happy with just the bushing, but still felt the throw was too long, tried the Steeda tri-ax and it is the shifter of my dreams, quiet, smooth, and took out just the right amount of throw so i can shift hard or lazy and still have positive engagement. Just make sure you adjust the spacing correctly with the reverse lock out plate or you'll have problems getting into first. I would only get the Barton if i was only drag racing and didn't care that my new car sounded like i had a rock crusher trans from the 60s. Its not a bad product but definitely not for me or my needs for the car.
Damn straight! haha.
I don't see why not.haha.
And there's a cop lol! Nice one!
That shifter is also much harder on the syncros than the stock shifter. Plan on cutting their life in half.
If he takes out a synchro they can...
#flashback
Mustangs are the working man's car, they're meant to be driven! :)
Stick shift? That's what I want to drive in cuz u go faster much quicker Idk if that's true but its better if u know it anyways!
25k.haha. I drive a lot.
WTF kind of question is that, respect? A car is a car there will always be a faster car out there. 2011 V6 has 300 hp compared to the 05-10 210 hp. 2011 5.0 has 400hp and 400 torque just about, compared to the 05-10 which had 315. The 2011 revise was much needed and frankly should've been in all 5th gen models. When cars like a 350z have 100hp more than a stang v6(05-10) you could see why enthusiast were pissed. GT has the monster torque but the 11 V6Stang is no slouch just get some coils on it.
I like noisy shifters lol
Not future I meant first lol
Show the shifting, not you. Your talking about a shifter so angle your camera to show the viewer the shifter in action. Thank you
Thanks!
Thanks!
