Lol I had the same problem mine was a grinding noise like the brakes were bad..and I couldn't figure out what was going on, told my buddy that I would check brakes on day off before going to buy brand new ones because didn't think it was it due to not needing..and behold when I went to take lugs off they were already loose...tighten them down, and goodbye noise..I figured that when I was working under the hood I dropped a nut in the bay, couldn't get from the top so I took wheel off but never tightened when car was back on the ground...saved money in the long run but glad nothing major happened that could have

Live and learn. Useful video. Always start with the basics, even get a notepad and pen and write down the issues, then step back, look around the car (or any mechanical thing) and analyze the problem. Always start with the simple stuff. A little thinking goes a long way. I've been a mechanic for over 50 years and using a checklist can really help.

I like how he says in honesty phrase included not arrogantly because he says, honestly, “nothing ever goes as planned.” It shows good character. When I work I happen to do this type of mechanical imperfection and have to tweak pertinent brackets or tighten screws to correct torque because I’m either exhausted or feeling stronger so it tends to focus on proper placement is very important for the time but never perfect because something normally doesn’t go as planned because I’m not a professional mechanic but a practical mechanic.

As a technician. I have done that too much as a new tech. Luckily I caught it before I gave it back to the customer. Small stuff like that is the bane of most shops because it's easy to screw up and could cost hundreds to fix if not caught.

This reminds me of when I first brought home my 09 shelby gt500 it had a clucking noise when you would put it gear kinda like a worn ujoint, I took the drive off it was fine looked at everything it was fine, finally took it to the ford dealer and had them check it completely since it was still in warranty, they told it had something to do with the after market clutch and shifter which I thought was total BS, anyway I was really thinking of changing the clutch which was a good $ 1400 after awhile the noise seemed to go away by itself, turned that the problem was the Honda dealer where I bought put regular gas instead of 93 octane, the noise I was hearing was the engine struggling with the cheap gas.

JRD, you ever experience any vibration at highway speeds after lowering your car and putting on the 20” wheels? I just lower my 12 Boss 302 and added RTR tech 7’s 20” wheels with Nitto555 tire, as well as BMR pan hard bar, eibach adjustable lower control arms, and BMR lower control arm relocation brackets. Just ordered BMR upper adjustable control arm and bracket. Just curious is anyone has had this issue with their S197 after lowering and installing new wheels and tires. My issue is I don’t know if it’s a tire issue since they are all new nitto 555’s or driveline issue. I installed both at same time and have had tires balanced twice. It mostly at highway speeds over 70 it’s goes from a steady vibration to a more noticeable vibration. It’s odd smother vibration to a more pronounced vibration on and off with a slight whine during acceleration only at highway speeds. Hard to tell what it is since did all these mods at the same time.

How can you tell if your carrier bearing/ 2 piece driveshaft are starting to go bad? (Mostly stock non tracked car) I’ve got an annoying rotational noise that sounds super similar to a wheel bearing going bad. ( helicopter inside your car ) from say 35mph and gets louder as I speed up. I have a slight vibration at varying speeds, but I mean that could be a bent wheel as well. I’m trying to figure this out without throwing money at the car that I don’t need to.

Man when I twisted my driveshaft at the tract i broke the carrier bearing and it also bent up into my mgw near the input shaft. So the only way i could get the drive shaft to turn to reach that 4th bolt was drop the clutch while it was on jack stands. Then it was somewhat seized up and we couldn’t get a flat head or anything to break it loose. Dropped the clutch again and wallllahhh.

3 year update: Lol so somehow the car kind of fixed itself out. I just kept driving it and after a few weeks all the vibration and what not stopped. Strange but happy it went away because I was going to return the car back to the dealer 🫣

I dont know why you thought it had anything to do with the drive shaft when it happened after pushing in the clutch. Should have asked somebody who had better knowledge about cars.

  • @chris5oh39

You should lift the car and loosen the lug nuts and re tighten them without the weight of the car on them. When you torque them with the weight of car it could bend the wheel or not tighten properly

That's how I'd look at it. I've watched a few videos of the 2 piece drive shafts catastrophically failing....screw that. idk that Jacob is gonna be going over 120mph, but if he does now he doesn't have to worry about the secondary damage a exploding driveshaft can cause.

Oh brotha! I had all 4 up under there. The jack stand arm is black and hidden into the tire tread. I left the jack there barely “squished” with the wood so it’s an extra bit of safety actually. Trust me all 4 jack stands were under the car, I was home alone too so can’t risk anything happening. I appreciate you looking out though. It really means a lot! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
