2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO, engine noise
I'm trying to diagnose an engine noise. I'm hoping that it's not a rod knock and I've been told that this is a normal Polaris Sportsman noise is there anything I can do about it? Also I have checked the oil and I have checked the timing chain, both are good.

Did you try and adjust the rockers? The cam wears and the rockers need adjustment after a while.
What heatshields do you have by your right side where the exhaust pipe goes thru to prevent overheat

I had same exact noise and it was heat shield to lol.
i acually think 1 of the cam shaft lobes is worn down and making the dull tick . it is a very common problem for 500 sportsman .
the bike im working on does the same thing but it goes away after a bit
Primary or secondary clutch.
My starter bendix gear only knocks under acceleration. Has been doing it since 1,200 miles. I now have 2,000 and nit any worse.
Did you find out what it was
I think it's the starter Bendix gear
My 07 450 does that sound but only for a little bit after I start it and it just quits
That’s the exact sound that my 2002 magnum makes. 😔
My starter Bendix makes a noice just like that but for only 2 or so seconds when just starting my atv

@@honda400ex6 it's NOT the bendix. I replaced my bendix, BOTH buschings AND the bendix washer. And it STILL knocks. I have an 06 500 ho

Check the bendex that engages flywheel.

I did. I even ran it with the starter out. I ended up selling it but I believe it was the balance shaft.
It's ur starter bro check ur starter or carnk case
Sounds like a bad rod or main bearing.

NATHAN JOHNSON , good idea but I took it out and ran it and had the same noise. It's gone now... sold it.
She’s done
yeah the engine is gonna blow up soon it's a race going out and it blows thecasting out
its coming from the crank area. It's the balancer shaft. THey put junk bearings in the balancer shaft. You'd have to split the case and rebuild the whole damn thing. Just go with a Honda.

If that's the case, replace it now while it's only a top-end disassembly. Quick job in under an hour.

@@pattywaktdiy4175To late now. Now the crank is damaged and it needs replaced. Changing the bearing or rods will do no help, the problem will repeat within seconds after starting. Time for a bottom end rebuild, only remedy now.

@@bryanmiller9324 well that sucks. Sorry to hear that. I’ll be posting a video of my own soon on diagnosing this noise and how a top-end replacement fixed my issue, at least. All we can do as a Polaris community is combine our knowledge to try and avoid these very unwanted fixes!
Hello Sir can you tell me what the finaliment problem was? I'm in the same situation as you friendly
starter bendix $30.00 cheep fix
Flux Capacitor
its the starter easy 80 dollar fix
It is rod slap you will eventually need to build the top end for any future wonderers common problems with them old sportsman's sorry for the let down.
Sounds like the clutch to me. Maybe the hootinator valve? Could try doing a laser sweep on the crystal diodes? How many gigawatts of power is the flux capacitor getting? Should be 1.21

Ha ha, you're just kidding. It's clearly the balance actuators on the rotary girders divided by the rotational spacer weights on the automatic clutch shaft.
