Insightful. Before we produced so much garbage, in Scotland over the years we referred to those men and now women...as dustmen, rubbish men, bin men/women. They would get tips at Christmas. Not so much now as they work in teams. Recycling teams. We had a fun song that everyone loved...my ole man's a dustman. By Lonnie Donegan. 3 million plus hits.

As a driver for Waste Management, I can tell you from personal experience this is the highlight of my day when the little one's come out and talk to us, watch the truck, give us water, snacks. I love being able to light up their day with the air horn, or letting them watch the truck "eat the trash" as they say lol.

As a resident I can say the highlight to me is to hear the sound of the trucks and estimate how close they are to come around the corner before coming up the street. To see the worker show pleasure in working by collecting the iteams put out for pick up and puting the garbage can or recycling bin back in the yard and not toss in the streets. Not to make any residents upset. Also seeing front end drivers dumping the dumpsters to make more room for more garbage to best help the residents and owners of business and to help keep the community looking good. I like looking at all the different company trucks but when I see an old rusty one then I say they still have it operating. The old but good. So many of the worker are kind and tenderhearted and show good hospitality. I also like to tell them thank you and good morning or good afternoon. I know to pray for us all. They are important to the communities and we should consider that it can be taxing on their body. They also be in all types of weather to assure pick up. We all should realize how important they are because when we realized how important is to have those things picked up especially those things with an awful smell. Thank You and all the Management and staff. GOD BLESS.

When I was a little girl, I use to live in the Caribbean and I was about 4 years old and this American man that came from California named jean Paul Evernaski, he pretends to be santa and he offers little gift to children. When I was 6, I red him a note saying I am happy to see him each year but this year I wanted to give him a gift, so I handed him a painted picture. He said thank you my little best friend. My parents moved from where we were living. At 17 years old, I return to the same village on the 24 looking to offer him a gift for all the time he made me happy. There was no traces of him. Today 26 years later, I would offer him any gift he ever wanted, as Iong as I can afford it, just to tell him thank you. I don't know if he's alive, but often times I tod my kids that I will never let go from this childhood memory. If he's alive , he'd be in his 70 now or more. Sometimes people came in our lives like a season, some brings warmth, so cold and some shake our world like a breezy wind, but there are those, who'd left footprints on our soul until our eternity.

My family moved and I didn’t see him until I was nearly an adult. It turned out, he was also my great grandmother’s mailman. We never knew. And I met him again at my great grandmother’s wake. He had tears in his eyes as he said “I got to see her again” to my mom. I’ll be 50 this year and I’ll never forget Handsome John. A lovely man.

That is so nice but sad at the same time. As a child we like everyone no matter who they are or what they look like. Racism is taught and this video truly shows a special bond between a child and a man. No matter his occupation or what he looks like. If only we as adults can like or care for our neighbors.

That is just the sweetest thing. You know, chilren are pure of heart. They don't care if you are a garbage man, the waitress at McDonalds or the President of a company. They judge you based on how impressed they are with the real you. That little boy had come to rely on the fact that OD really does have an important job and the boy was thankful for him. He didn't think that being a garbage man was a shameful job or an uneducated job he just apreciated seeing the man, the man spending some time with him and the man taking his garbage away. This makes me believe there is hope for man kind.

As a former trashman, I can relate. You meet a lot of good people along the way. Especially kids. The trash truck itself bring the excitement. Because it's big, it's loud and you have trashmen moving at a fast pace. Kids would chase the truck ask us to blow the horn. Most times the parents would come out and wave to us as well. I have friendships with my former customers till this day.

lol why do people feel the need to defend the idea of racism? It doesn't matter whether it's learned or instinct, We are humans, the smartest animal that has ever existed, we need to be better than our primal instincts if we are to survive as one, or is the prosperity of the human species not of importance?

That made me cry because when MY kids were about the same age (2/3 years old) they used to rush to door to wave at the bin men......as a result of that, one night when we came back after a long day I found a chocolate selection box hanging from my door. The message inside said “Happy Christmas to the kids at number 2”.........I was a single mum & it just melted my heart. To this day, my kids who are now 21,22 & 31 have NEVER been able to forget that kind gesture.......I have brought them up to show respect for EVERYONE. When times were hard ( for many years I had to forget that I had a degree & take whatever work I could as I lived in a rural area. That meant that for much of that time I did cleaning jobs. In hindsight I met & befriended some WONDERFUL people whom I still stay in touch with and regard as my friends.......NEVER judge a book by its cover!

Very sweet! My little nephew aged two, here in NZ, always got excited when he heard the big garbage truck coming and ran outside to sit on the step and watch in awe! Something about little boys and big trucks! I got a marriage proposal once from a 3 y.o. boy who said, "We can get married: I'll drive a big truck and you can stay home and make me cakes!" :-)
