Watch some old Strickland/Mcreedy matches. Those guys play fast, but you can see how naturally someone can see patterns and solutions and just do it rather than stand around and contemplate forever.... Reyes speed has never bothered me, but there are some young players and Euro players that take all the flow out of the game and its super boring to watch IMO.

It's an optical illusion. Earl put high right on the cue so it still had some side spin coming up table. I think the shadow also lends to it looking like the table was off a bit. The aggressor usually gets the rolls in a race to 11. Earl opening up running 2 racks was huge for him to find his zone. Once he was there, he kept tightening the noose. If Efren had a big break shot, he probably would've won 50% more tournaments over his career.

It likely had to do with the fact that Earl Strickland was among a group of players that bolted from the Pro Billiards Tour (note the patch on referee Scott Smith's jacket and Efren Reyes' shirt, as well as the fact that Strickland was not wearing such a patch). It's likely that those players were not allowed to participate in PBT events, which included the U.S. Open. Strickland had won the event in 1994, when he was still a member of the PBT, but then there was a split, and the group of players that bolted from the PBT, including Strickland, turned up on events broadcast by ESPN, including the Ultimate 9-Ball Challenge and the International Challenge of Champions, events you never saw any PBT players participate in (post-1994, in the case of the Int'l Challenge of Champions). As I understand it, the PBT went out of business in 1997, the year this match was recorded, so it's likely those differences were reconciled by then and all the players were invited.

@@hunterfisherpokerpoolguy7502 Some of that might be conjecture, but the fact about Strickland and other top players bolting from the PBT, as well as the PBT folding in 1997, is absolutely true. And that was unfortunate, because that came at a time when money was flowing into professional billiards, especially the PBT, which was sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds tobacco company's Camel brand in 1996, and the finals of every event from the 8-ball championships on that season was televised, and the TV window expanded from 90 minutes in 1995 to 2 hours in 1996, and in Prime Sports, which became the FOX Sports Network in 1996, they even had a TV partner. So professional billiards was about to take off in this country before the PBT went under in 1997. In fact, I think Johnny Archer won something like $165,000 on the PBT in 1996, which was unheard-of.

@@jordancesarmagos5843 efren reyes is #1 by people's VOTES because of his humbleness but when it comes to their resume earl has better resume . If only earl was humble like efren people would probably pick him as the G.O.A.T of pool. In fact earl has defeated efren more than the efren did to him. Earl: 5 times US 9ball champion Efren: 1 Time US 9ball champion Earl : 3 times WPA champion Efren : 1 time WPA champion Earl: he defeated efren 44 times out of 60 .. Efren : he defeated earl 16 times out of 60. There was a video on YT . Search it up.

It seems when they bring in old-timers in to announce they do horribly and are opinionated. They are stuck in their days. They can be irritating to listen to.

The announcers are intolerable to listen to. How about comment on their shots instead of arguing back and forth. Trying to one up the other. I had to finally put video on mute ugh
