Allen is a personal friend and has been for over 35 years. What most people that are these matches don’t realize is that Allen had pretty much quit playing competitively on the tour and would only play occasionally in a tournament if the spirit moved him. He quite simply was one of the greatest pool ambassadors for the sport that ever lived. And for those that don’t know the guy is absolutely legendary for taking down some of the biggest scores ever when it came to gambling on pool. Say what you want about his stroke but when the money was on the line in his heyday this guy was as fierce a competitor as you could find and he usually got all the cash. There just wasn’t any dog in him and believe me I’ve traveled around the country staking some big names for tons of cash and Allen just never rattled. And don’t get me started on how intelligent and sharp he was!!! Truly a legend but you prob won’t ever see much of him playing at that level during these early TV years.

Diamond tables are the trend but I love those Brunswick tables. The rails bank true where Diamonds bank short. Brunswicks are joy to play on.

Weird, I find exactly the opposite. If I make a gentle 4 to 2 (adjacents) kick on our Brunswicks, 8s or 9s (a true mirror angle kick) at the hall with center cue ball they are always majorly short, requiring at least a tip of follow. It may be that they haven't had cushions, or even cushion re-glues in 30+ years, but they are anything but geometrically accurate bankers, horribly short. I have even tested this on both types of tables with a literal mirror in place. On the other hand the Diamonds, at the other hall I play at occasionally, bank almost perfectly true geometrically...but they are VERY much newer tables. And I'm talking about slower pocket speed kinds of banks here. EVERY table comes up grossly short at higher speeds, that is just the nature of cushioned banks. Announcers often call that 'stiffening the bank'. Obviously you can also modify object ball shots with induced English as well. When I use a real or imagined ghost table to bank I add another entire diamond to the aim point to pocket the ball. I'm not challenging your experience, just saying it's completely contrary to mine. It doesn't really matter either way, you just have to play the table you are playing, in every case, not just banking. The funny part of this story is the proprietor at the hall that exclusively uses diamonds (primarily bar tables, unfortunately, but this was on the 9') took notice of what I was doing and fired a thumbs up when it dropped. I laughed. I almost never hear the pros glow as appreciatively about Brunswick tables the way they do Diamonds, either, but obviously there might be some sponsoring bias there, at least during matches they are sponsoring.

Efren Reyes is a master geometer and executor. Look at him at 5:38 lay down the almost exact path the cue ball will take. That's his 3-cushion experience coming in there.

I agree, that push stroke is strange, and I am shocked a pro does it. Someone should have coached him a long time ago to change that stroke, I think it hurts his game, and it kinda makes him look dumb for doing it. I knew a guy that used to bridge with an open bridge between his 1st and 2nd knuckle, and it was the strangest thing I have ever seen. I used to make fun of him for it, and I started calling him knuckle bridge. And it failed him a lot too, I beat him pretty much every time I played him.

I forgot how ridiculous Hopkins' stroke was.

Allen wasn't playing a lot in this time frame. One of the best $$ players the game has seen. Playing 1p for big $$ he was a beast. Had very little dog in him. You had to beat him.

If you subtract lucky rolls that Hopkins got bumping balls here and there it's hardly a comeback at all. Ugly stroke aside (it's not a beauty contest), it's obviously doesn't work: he's smashing the ball and barely getting one feet draw out of it, the timing is non-existent. But if they all played like this in that era, no wonders he got titles under his belt.

I grew up idolizing Mosconi, Fats, and Hopkins. Pretty good company. I just hope nobody says I remind them of Mike Siegel.

I forgot how weird a stroke Alan had. It was more a jab type of stroke not a nice smooth stroke like most pros have. Phenomenal pool player he was in the day. He could run with the best of them all day!

@@jgallagher1359 Exactly. Just because nobody really plays that way now doesn't mean it's wrong. If you really need to cinch a shot you can shorten up the stroke like that and it helps you make it especially if you are nervous.

I wonder how Efren visualizes the ball he is aiming at. What makes him so good is that he rarely misses. To me, that means he has a way of visualizing the ball that allows him to hit it with amazing precision. It doesn't seem to mattee if its solids or stripes. Maybe he visualizes angles?

you bet on your pick..Ill bet on efren reyes...every time...

The match itself is rather wonderful and highlights Efrem's abilities in the early '90s quite well. This stream is actually enhanced by the commentary. There is a lot of silence and humbleness and very few attempts to predict things that they just can't get right. I think this is because Howard Vicary was the right guest host to join Billy.

Have to see the first shot after the break from Efren, watch the cue as it rolls out, that table isn't even level.. got to love it. Old School. Allen should be thanking Efren because clearly when Reyes had the lead he kind of was just relaxing, playing pool hall billiards. We have witnessed it over the last thirty years; Reyes is a cool customer. He could have finished this game 13 - Nil, if he had his mind set.

Why? Allen was a 2 time US Open 9 ball champion defeating Mizerak and Sigel in the two finals. His high run in straight pool is 410. He wasn't playing much at this time and his stroke isn't conventional nor pretty, but he was a champion.

The guys on commentary sure are making a lot of excuses for Hopkins. To me it looks like he is intimidated by Efren, and he knows he can not miss or he will lose. I call it playing scared, I see it happen all the time. I am a really good player who plays at the masters level, and I see guys who are very good play me and shoot terrible, because they know if they miss I will run out, and that puts pressure on them to play great and a lot of the time they choke. Then the same guy will play someone not as good as me and run out almost every game on them, when there is no pressure to play great. Hopkins is playing scared, and choking under the pressure of playing Efren, back then Efren was the #1 player in the world and he was beating everyone.

I dont think efren actually tried against this guy. Feels like efren purposely made mistakes just to give him time at the table

WTH was that stroke by Hopkins at 31:32? That was just plain weird. I can see why he was playing like he was previously if he was doing much of that. His stats up to that point were HORRIBLE, especially for a player the likes of him. "It doesn't matter who you are playing, you gotta shoot the shot that's there" Truer words were never spoken, at least for the offensive aspect. Not as true for the defensive, where you try to shoot to your opponents weaknesses, especially non pros, where they usually abound (they certainly do in my case :-/). "Some people say it's heavier" LOL...either it is or it isn't..they make these things called scales, and very accurate ones if you so choose. It's not like it's hard to measure, objectively and definitively. I always find it funny that people have 'opinions' on such things, like somehow their opinion has any bearing on the reality. Subjective stuff you can have opinions on, this, not so much. :-/ :-) I wrote this before the other announcer chimed in with the answer. The thing that struck me most about the answer was the "varies in weight part"...not good, makes me wonder how good their other quality control is on that ball (diameter, roundness, etc.). I know even top tier ball manufacturers do 'hand' match balls for diameter and weight, but since he called this out on ONE of the ball types, my thought would be to avoid them, personally, unless they tend to run 'truer' than the other choice...that is the MAIN goal, IMHO. It's like one day I walked by and heard a handful of other engineers 'brainstorming' what a problem with a circuit might be. I said something like, "why don't you just hook up a damned scope and SEE what it is?". I got some dirty looks, some smiles, and one laugh. I expect the laugh came from someone thinking the same thing I was but was more reticent to voice it.

You do not have a level of knowledge to critique Hopkins stroke to the degree you are. That twisting motion...it's possible he's using it all the time for a variety of effects. The shot you're referring to he got perfect position on. My guess is that is a common part of his stroke. As for the rest of it...you're on the right track but grabbing bits and pieces of language and taking it hyper literally and/or removing an understood context. The part that you're on the right track about is that people do not like thinking through things to the extent that is needed for super high quality. So as a counter they just kind of act like things have been done correctly.

I believe that Efrén Reyes has telekinesis when he concentrates on playing well and can dominate the balls mentally, although Efrén must not know that he has telekinesis unconsciously. What is certain is that Efrén Reyes' destiny is to be the best pool player in the world despite the fact that he has lost pool games because he does not concentrate well.

Ive said for years, I think Bill Incardona is the worst possible announcer. Over and incorrectly analyzes shots, gives opinions vastly different than the players that are greatly superior to his talent and argues with every announcer he works with.
