the respect between 2 great players...blessings to all
Those two players, right there are great ambassadors for the game of billiards
Efren said he thought Nick was one of the best players ever. At the end of the match you can see Efren and Nick talking about some shots that happened in the match. I don't remember seeing Efren doing this with someone else before.

the best he said was sigel. along with buddy hall if im not mistaken
The pool God's toyed and we enjoyed ageless grace under pressure it's really true a smile will do Champions need this Poo.
I remember young Efren trying to hide his skill in order to keep hustling for money..really shook the world such a shock the contempt he smiled through never arrogance. Model for excellence.

Wow! The difference in playing equipment in 1988 to today are polar opposites. That felt was like rolling balls thru mud. 2 all time greats @ all disciplines.
Thank you so much for this. Wish it was English.
This match and others like it from this era featuring these two show why reyes has a ton of respect for varner and names him when asked who is the best player he faced
7:26 brilliant bank for position
3:45 greatest break ever
This was the year before Nick started winning everything. In 1989 he won 11 of 22 pro tournaments, probably the best year any player has ever had on the pro tour. He won back-to-back U.S. Open 9 ball titles in 1989 and 1990. Later he traveled to the Philippines and beat Efren in a long race 60-47.

Great game.
Is Nick playing without chewing gum? First time I've ever seen that 😄 That bank shot at 7:25 to regain position 😍
24:32 is a crazy shot

24:30 wow wow wow
Varner should have hooked Reyes on the last 7 ball

Something fishy about him going for that shot, he could have easily hooked him
The fact that Reyes es playing with a $10 cue is even more impressive.

A good player can use a walking stick, but a top cue back then was probably worth $30

Actually they’re $26.93. I have a couple. We have the same maker and I live the same town as efren. Just change the tips use good quality ones and you’re good to go
This is peak ASMR.
Varner was a top 3 9-ball player in the world at that time with Sigel and Strickland.
Efren and Nick are pals. Nick looks like he's 12 years old here 😄
Those combos in my opinion are the toughest. Those two balls hitting has to be perfect, not much room for almost.
good sportsmanship, 2 gentlemen.
28:06 made me feel a certain way
The better player won
Love Nick Varner! I figured he would lose this match because only Efren's wins are allowed on the internet
25:48 Nick doing a type of Z shot before Efren 😅
懐かしいのきた笑
Since this page won't show the final match...Jose Parica went on to defeat Efren Reyes for the championship
The 9 ball goat. Earl 2.
Holy Willy Wonka.
Efren got lucky, but Nick already fluked 2 balls in the final frame so it evened out

Yes ik he beat efren in his home turf for $25,000 efren was on his prime
WTF? skipped like 4 games after the first rack?!
I just noticed this. On that last double bank varner did on the 3 ball he marked the spot on the rail he needed to aim to with the tip of his cue. You can clearly see the spot on the felt after the next shot. Cheeky Nick, cheeky. It's still a shot I wish I could make on a good day, but still cheeky. Still lost so karma won. Nick is a great guy in interviews, I wouldn't have expected something underhanded like that from him

He didn’t do anything illegal. He was just measuring out the angle of the shot. The chalk being left behind was just incidental. Besides, that was a lucky shot times two. First, he had to get the legal hit, then it had to go off the other ball perfectly. Nick was just playing to avoid giving ball in hand, or good position. The fact that shot went in was just a fluke.

@@lodi70005 I'm not so sure. I looked at it again, and the spot I saw was actually pre-existing and in the wrong spot anyway, the spot is just right if the next spot south of where he puts his cue, but I'm still sceptical. The way he shoves the tip in the crease of the bumper and lifts it.... It makes me wonder if it isn't something that is, I don't know if I'd say allowed, maybe, but overlooked? This is Japan in the 80's after all, and that pre-existing spot makes me think that. If so than it's not underhanded, just a valid use of the local rules. I'm a fan of Varner, I'm not trying to say bad things about him, but I have to call it how I see it, and if anything, if you showed him this and asked him he'd probably just wink at you. And besides, he still lost so it's not like it made too much of a difference anyway. Varner is still ok in my book, if not a bit more cheeky than I originally thought.

Stop smoking that sh1t son!!! Varner is good but Efren is a much stronger player
Loser breaks. No magic racks. Real man pool.
Varner's last 7 ball cut was the dumbest shot selection I've seen in a pro match. safety was so easy.
This is old already. Efren is a good winner, Nick is a good loser.
