1994 Mercury Capri XR2 | Retro Review
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The Miata always seemed to be the obvious choice at the time, but looking back, the Capri was a sleek looking competitor...too bad it was FWD.

Mercury pulled a GM and improved the car just before they decided to stop selling it.
I just bought one the other day, and had never seen one before. Hours later im driving down the road and i see another one in blue. I was so happy

I'm one of the few that has one even if mine is a base
8 second 0-60 and 16 flat in the quarter mile was quite peppy for such a small car at the time.
I bought my capri (without turbo) 2 years ago and I can say it's the love of my life!
One of my neighbors had a Capri convertible. This was back in 1992. An attractive sporty convertible, but I've never cared for the rear end design and I thoguht the interior plastics looked very cheap. They were very rare, even in the 90s.
I like these. They're interesting and a minty one would steal the show at Radwood
I would honestly have one of these rather than a Miata. I just think they look so damn cool

Pity it didn't share the AWD system too. Certainly would have been a unique selling point for a convertible at the time.
Have a buddy who swapped this car’s drivetrain into a Festiva. It was a rocket
Wow this actually existed?!? I thought it was a dream I had when I was 10
Had the Turbo, this car was fun to drive and probably the fastest car I've owned. I think the turbo engine gets better with more mileage, my car was blazingly fast.

Is there one for sale, you know of?
I remember one of my study hour teachers had one of these when I was in school the convertible version and I remember one day he drove it in on what started to be a sunny day then turned rainy and I remember it started pouring then one of the teachers came into the room and said "hey Dave you left your top down" then he was like "AH dammit!" Had to go down with a bucket and bale the water out and put the top up. It was a neat little car though I remembered being rather fond of it

@@SpikeRazzor the probe was a readied mx6 amongst a slew of other cars used, tracer/escort was a protégé, festival was a 121, ranger and all the pickups for awhile
They only sold 366 of these 94 XR2s worldwide. I personally owned and drove one for a couple years and then parted it out and scrapped it and put the drivetrain in my Festiva. The holes in the front floors/wheel wells were almost big enough to fit a football through. Very common on these cars since the tops were notoriously leaky there. Saw another one just like mine rotting away in an old guys personal junkyard that his local municipality was forcing him to clear out. Besides the aesthetic differences, the 94 XR2 gained a revised suspension and front sway bar link setup over the previous years as well as quicker ratio steering. It's too bad they didn't get a little power bump, maybe 10-15hp or something, but that would have necessitated recertification and I'm sure Ford wanted to put no more effort into the Capri.
Given its Italian design and Mazda 323 mechanicals, the Capri should have been a winning formula for a lightweight sport. But even when fitted with the turbocharged variant of the engine used in the Miata, the Capri driving experience just didn't compare well to the Miata.
Glad I got me one last year in Pismo Beach Ca for $300 😊
Always reminds me of Lotus Elan M100.
I didn’t know it has the same engine from the rally inspired Mazda 323 GTX with AWD.
Saw them more than a few times up here in The Great White North 😂👍🇨🇦
I was trying to think of the last time I saw a Capri XR2. Pretty sure it's this retro clip of Motorweek.
Facelift model has always been rare, saw one in Austin last year and my head spun around out of shock. Sad the interior is such a depressing coal bin throughout. Maybe it would have had a better chance in the Rad era with a splash of color or fun inside.

Car & Driver said these looked like bathtubs. I used to go to a barber who had a white one, the color amplified the uh, fixture-like styling.
I have always liked these cars from the beginning. I figured the turbo was problematic, but the basic would be more reliable. I have seen a few, but I'm sure they are really rare now.

I hardly saw any of this gen Capri on the roads and highways when I was a kid in the 90s. It's probably one of the cars that hurt Mercury.
What's there to not like? Mazda engine. Great MPG
1994 is the final year for the Mercury Capri.
I remember this, always thought it was cool looking
Imo Mazda's engineering has come a long way whether under their own brand and formerly as the underpinnings for Ford's small car program. Considering my experience 🤔 with my 2014 Mazda 5, I think they would have improved Ford's quality in the long term. Unfortunately, that's history.
In the UK we had the capri by ford.... I think USA had the same one only by Mercury (Ford anyway) But we had the ford fiesta as Xr2 or xr2i.

It was never officially imported to Europe but our Ford dealer managed to get one. And to be honest, to me it was one of the ugliest cars i´ve ever seen, the contemporary Mk5 Escort Cabrio looked way more handsome. And being a grey import it wasn´t even reasonably priced, so the one in the dealer showroom was the first and only Capri XR2 that i ever came across.
